I believe the site you were thinking of was WalmartSucks.com, which I believe has indeed been taking down, after quite a long duration of being active.

Basically a site where disgruntled ex-employees voiced their opinions about how they felt they had been wronged by the company.

The googlemotherfucker.com site was owned by someone in Maine. Basically when someone asked a question, the owners answer was usually "Google, Mother Fucker." meaning to search for your answer, instead of bothering him.

He had purchased the domain, made a banner with name to look almost exactly like google, which utilized the google.com search engine.

Thus allowing him to link anyone who asked nim a question he didn't feel like answering to the site. The site also had a nice disclaimer on the bottom of it that said "Please do not sue me, I am not a rich man."

He was contacted by Google's lawyers and asked to take the site down. He agreed to it, with the request that they provided him with a t-shirt. He got the shirt, the site came down, and later Google purchased it.

All in all, quite amusing.

[...] Also under Google’s (probably sore) thumb: googleporn, porngoogle, googlerotic, google-yahoo-sex, google-yahoo-porn, sexogoogle and to top it all off, sexpornotits. (The WHOIS doesn’t match up for that last one, but it’s definitely on Pingdom’s list.) There’s like a bajillion more, if you wanna rifle through the whole thing at TechCrunch, but most them are boring permutations of Google and Google services (gooooooooooooooooooogle) to combat cybersquatters. Not so sure about that sexpornotits one, though. [TechCrunch] [...]

I guess buying things like googlesucks.com makes sense for damage control. Hard for someone to create that site if you already own the domain.

But googlemotherfucker.com? That's just funny.

Having worked with a number of online brand protection specialists and domain name registrars in the past - this kind of practice is thoroughly commonplace among any major corporation. In the UK alone, any FTSE100 company will easily have a domain name portfolio that runs into 1,500+ names, and usually less than 20 per cent of those are actively being used to market.

Monitoring competitor domain name registration activity is also more commonplace than most people think, as an extra level of competitive intelligence on new product launches, etc - but brands are getting increasingly smart about that and these days, almost always use a ghost, third-party to divert any unwanted attention.
