    Maybe they just bought all this domains to avoid other people of using them, just like “googlesucks” but not because they are going to use them.

    The others one like “googletimewarner” or with “ebay” or “ipod” i think were purchased just because some people may use them to do some kind of pishing using the autorithy of Google and the other brands.

    It is safe to assume these are defensive registrations or even more likely: the result of someone else registering a silly domain like the above and Google sending a C&D letter.

    If it’s defensive registering it seems a bit pointless. Do they also own googlesucks.org? Googlesucks.co.uk? Googlesuks.com? Googlesu.cx? And so on. If someone wants to start a website criticising Google, you can’t stop them by registering every single conceivable domain name, nor should you.

    I’m sure there’s been at least one trademark infringement case brought a company trying to close down companysucks.com, or at least move them to an URL which didn’t include their company name, but annoyingly I can’t remember who was involved.

    the whole domain name registration thing is totally screwed up.

    there should be a law or something saying that if someone doesn’t use his purchased domain for say 6 months (meaning a legitimate blog/website with the domain as letterhead/logo), then the domain should automatically go back for sale to the public.

    there’s really too many domains “owned” by brokers who just use them to make cash. that makes me wanna puke.

    @25 You’re dead on with the latter argument.

    After MyBlogLog was acquired by Yahoo we investigated a name change and asked Yahoo for a list of all the domains they owned. I swear to god the list numbered above 10,000 and it was primarily the result of them “acquiring” through C&D letter all the names that cybersquatters had registered.

    @29 That argument is ridiculous. These days, domains are much like real estate, and can be just as, or more valuable. If I buy some real estate, and don’t build anything on it for years, should it be given back to the public for someone else to purchase? I don’t think so. Are we all bummed that it’s a royal pain to find a good domain name these days? You bet, but that is no argument for enforcing different rules on domains than we do other real property.

    On another note, one reason why GreenGardenGifts.com is interesting? It’s the domain in the example ad on the front page of http://www.google.com/adsense

    Not entirely right to compare real estate with domain names. Like comparing CDs with downloadable music, the economics of the phisical world and the digital world are very different. In this case a domain name costs almost nothing to buy and maintain. Land on the other hand is very expensive to buy and you have to pay taxes to keep it.
    Note also that in certain areas (the peruvian jungle, for example) you can actually get land almost for free on the condition that you do something with it.

    @36 The argument is sound. And we should indeed extend it include actual real estate (obviously this would only apply to urban real estate, not some farmland in Sticksville). If the property stays derelict/empty for say 12 months, it should go on an auction. That would have three benefits:

    1. Reduce real estate prices
    2. Increase real estate density
    3. Get rid of all derelict buildings

    Battersea Powerstation (in London, UK) is the perfect example. The huge building has been empty for over a life time because opportunist real estate agents decide to buy it, pretend they are going to redevelop it, then just sit on it till it appreciates enough in value to sell again.

    It seems not many people understand why Google owns all of these domain names. Just to clarify to anyone thats wondering. They were not, for the most part “registered” by Google, they were acquired from others who were “passing off” the name as a result of a C&D. Thats why there all sorts of strange combinations, they are simply protecting their Google trademark and brand, not because they are planning to make websites for all of these things.

    I find the Web 3.0 -flavoured addresses (applied-semantics etc.) quite interesting. Probably more about preparing for the future than the above examples of brand protection (ebaygoogle etc.).

    The reason I equate domain names to real estate is that once the domain is bought, there is not another one just like it. The CD versus downloadable music argument is exactly opposite to this; I can make an infinite number of exact copies of the download. Domains are much more like real property, in that they are unique, and cannot be duplicated.

    Your statement about land in the Peruvian jungle further proves the argument. If I want to buy 37 Park Place in New York city, I have to pay the price to buy that exact land. I can buy 37 Park Place in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but that is the .biz to New York’s .com . Land in the Peruvian jungle is equivalent to sjfhsdfjkhjdfhjkshdfjkshdfj.net .

    The only reason your real estate example might hold any water is that the building is in a popular place, and if it becomes run down, the public has to see it every day. You don’t have to go to any particular domain though. Just because you are mad that I own OriginalSin.com and choose to do nothing with it, doesn’t mean you should have the right to take it away from me.

    I believe the day will come that the cost to register Business.com will be more than the cost to register My-Domain-Is-Super-Cool.com .

    Having worked with a number of online brand protection specialists and domain name registrars in the past - this kind of practice is thoroughly commonplace among any major corporation. In the UK alone, any FTSE100 company will easily have a domain name portfolio that runs into 1,500+ names, and usually less than 20 per cent of those are actively being used to market.

    Monitoring competitor domain name registration activity is also more commonplace than most people think, as an extra level of competitive intelligence on new product launches, etc - but brands are getting increasingly smart about that and these days, almost always use a ghost, third-party to divert any unwanted attention.
