Does anyone know exactly what happened here? Was this a test of Yahoo outsourcing ads to Goog, or was this a test of Goog as a participant in AMP?
Or was this a single-player (Goog) test of ad delivery through yhoo market?

Is Google going to play on AMP? One company makes a market, the other participates in it - no merger necessary? Yahoo as the new market maker.
No anti-trust problems if there's an open marketplace for all to participate.

What does goog get out of it? They get to be the rescuer & they get to pool their ad demand w/yahoo's ad demand and, thereby, drive up auction prices.
What will the auction algorithm/dynamics be for AMP? Anyone have any idea?

Sounds win-win to me... hard to tell who wins short term without algo info.

Guess they dodged the bullet this time, even though a majority of their gains can be attributed to Alibaba.com. But overall, they manage to beat estimates of 9 cents per share so that's good news for Yahoo shareholders since you don't have to be subjected to panic selling tomorrow. Microsoft earnings are coming next so we'll just have to wait and see how this going to play out with the buyout.

They aren't trying to become another network? Give me a break. They desperately want a social network, in part to catch advertisers. They really need to finish work on their "Universal Profile System" and acquire WordPress. 360 is a failure and Yaho has no reliable blogging product to offer.

I personally like the AOL deal because Bebo comes with it. The Microsoft deal would be horrible for consumers.

I really hope M$ buys Yahoo and after that they go bankrupt.
Same as AOL being bought by Time Warner.

I really hope this goes wrong for M$.

so essentially the outsourcing of some ads to google bumped their revenue number up just a smidge, they beat expecatations, stock price will go up, and they can now continue shopping themselves around at a higher valuation meaning now the numbers for a merger with AOL might actually work. if i were msft i'd be pushing to raise the offer now.

i wonder if they could keep a small deal with GooG in place in perpetuity and if the outsourced ads were a small enuff % they could get the revenue bump without inciting any antri-trust issues.

James, this is a liveblog. Inevitably they will edit and summarize for another post, but this is the raw discussion. You try to liveblog a conference call with proper editing and spelling and ill show you 10 places you can get a job.

In my opinion they just want to tell something to shareholders and move the microsoft to fold their offer... thats their only way now...

But we know that microsoft want them, so they will fold it only if yahoo merge with google and then EU will block the merge (Y+G)... so no way for them... just hide somewhere for a time...

They draw visitors through all the sites that want traffic back

Ever wonder if this kind of stuff is just stubbornness associated with negotiation? I mean $31 per share or $35 per share, is the risk associated with getting that incremental difference worth that much when the company already has a 62% premium offer on the table?

I'm still not seeing anything that "maximizes shareholder value" more than the Microsoft deal.
