MyPlayList Combines Flickr And Online Music
by Duncan Riley on April 16, 2008

myplaylist.jpgMyPlayList, a bootstrapped startup from Agentbleu, a Englishman living in France, combines streamed music and Flickr for a free music service that delivers visual as well as musical abundance.

MyPlayList uses the XSPF xml format to combine the images from the Flickr image sharing service, with music that is hosted across the internet, and similar to Seeqpod does not host or cache any of the music to avoid any copyright issues.

To use, users enter the name of any band or singer, and the system automatically compiles a Flickr - music combination, or suggests an existing playlist if one is already in the system. Registered users can create custom playlists and the site offers various embedable versions as well.

We covered GrooveShark’s new player yesterday, and MyPlayList works in the same space (along with Seeqpod). The visuals delivered by MyPlayList is a nice touch, particularly in full screen mode. Mark the site down as another free music provider that may challenge the likes of the play five times then buy Last.fm and the geo-retarded Pandora.

it’s a screenshot, I couldn’t use the embed as it currently autoplays, but I’ve emailed them to see if I can get a non-autoplaying one, but if you visit the site you’ll see it works.

I just had to comment because you said “Geo-Retarded”. Awesome.

Ha Pandora = Fail

Congrats on the launch MyPlayList.

“Mark the site down as another free music provider that may challenge the likes of the play five times then buy Last.fm and the geo-retarded Pandora.”

Surely it may, but those sites are a long way behind imeem.com, at least according to alexa’s new, less inaccurate, stats.

Why don’t we see these mashup sites using the imeem catalog? We see youtube ad flickr mashups all the time, but you’d think a giant, legal repository of music would be a prime target for mashup authors.

I think MyPlayList is a fantastic idea. So simple and useful.

Went to the site and asked it for a playlist (for Thao Nguyen). It worked like magic, only quicker.
Then I created an account and tried to create another playlist (for Basia Bulat). It stepped me through rather laboriously, then when I tried to play, I heard no music.
Looks promising, though.

Andrew, you are given the option to check the songs work as you choose them, but they are also checked in advance, then if one is dead or becomes dead while playing, the sys will auto kill it and move on in about 10 seconds.

The hardest thing was making the app simple.

Hey, i’m quite confident i got the best playlist one can get on this service.

ask for a playlist from band “the beautiful girls” and.. well, let flickr do its magic ;)

simple and useful - a v. cool service. Way to go Duncan and TC for coving the bootstrapped startups - more please.

Just put me out of business, not really but still - its a good idea. However, while listening to Supergrass do you really want to see pictures of those guys?

ps. “this photo is unavailable” slides are not so hot

Peteski “this photo is unavailable” slides are not so hot..

These are removable on the info pages, you will find a link ‘remove blank images’.

It’s a bit like a wiki where the community are responsible for keeping the playlists clean. There is also a link ‘get more tracks’ on the same page that will top up the playlist with the latest available music.

Type in “breasts”. The pictures are horrible, but the music is funny.
