Chinese Internet Users Say “Enough” To International Bullying

Michael Arrington

A virus is spreading through Chinese Internet users - they are adding a “Love China” icon to their MSN chat names by the thousands to show support for their country.

The icon, according to a number of blogs, is said to be in response to Western bullying over recent Olympic protests. Over the last weeks thousands of protesters have come out in force as the Olympic torch, destined for China this summer, has traveled through their borders. On a number of occasions the torch has been extinguished, and additional security measures have been taken in cities around the world.

From SushiPanda, linked above:

Over half of my Chinese-Chinese friends on MSN have put the badge on their contact names, in defiance of all the anti-China bullying that they’re undoubtedly reading about in the Chinese newspapers, watching on the Chinese news, and scouring over on the hundreds of blogs and BBS’s peppering China’s cyberscape and devoted to propping up this country’s national pride.

Outsiders are suggesting that the news in China is being censored and that Chinese citizens aren’t getting a balanced view of the reality of the international protests. But whatever the cause, this is a significant showing of Chinese nationalistic behavior, and a sign that they are paying attention to the outside world.

I thought it was a bit eerie with Chinese secret service staff dressed in track suits and pummeling any British citizen trying to spoil the Olympic torch run in London.

paying attention to the outside world, yes… but getting cencored, biased information, too… they have no idea what is really going on but are led by misguided patriotism. just an example of how people collectively can be extremely foolish…

  4. Chris Nixon

Just what are the international community “bullying” China to do. The way I see it is Western Governments are pretty much getting on their knees to please the Chinese government while a small number of protesters are trying to highlight some issues in the Chinese governments human rights record…issues which the Chinese promised would be sorted before the Olympics.

Nobody is against the Chinese…just the way the government are treating their own people.

  5. Tom

They are sinister…They don’t seem to understand, it’s not bullying, media are allowed to report what they like, the BBC doesn’t speak for the British government, they usually criticise it.

They are scary, they buy into nationalistic crap…

  6. 113.com

As the former president Bush said publicly, in the US and while in China, there’re a lot of misunderstandings about China… so, it’s up to you whether you want to trust Mr. Bush, too.. (noting of cos that he’s been also a skilled politician.)

  7. Doron

I just checked my IM list and even my overseas Chinese friends display the (L) CHINA icon. I guess most of them are just sick and tired of the mostly negative news written about there country. Many bloggers and even journalists shoot from the hip without checking there sources when writing about China. Besides this, the youngsters don’t care about the politics. They are just proud of there country. Just like Americans.

    well said.

  9. Shafqat

@Tom - generalize much? “they” buy into nationalistic crap? I’m not Chinese, but there are a billion of “them” out there who might feel differently than how you portray “them.”

Interesting find. Have seen this spreading like wildfire. I don’t think its meant to be an antagonizing or in-your-face. Just a sign of patriotism - all power to anyone who feels love for their country!

  10. Chinkerfly

@Tom who is this universal ‘they’ you are referring to. I find that quite disturbing. Just as disturbing as when Chinese say foreigners are out to get them.

“Outsiders are suggesting that the news in China is being censored and that Chinese citizens aren’t getting a balanced view of the reality of the international protests.”

Difference is Chinese are getting around those censors to get to international media coverage and find out what they’re missing. What is the rest of the world doing to get around one sided Western media coverage?

  11. 113.com

China is not perfect. But it’s improving day by day. But it’s ok to criticize. Just be fair. :p

  12. Frank Church

I am adding a F*CK China! Icon to my chat profile. This blind nationalism is simply despicable.

How to make these Chinese understand it is not against them, but their government. The US (and the rest of the West) is just as deplorable for condoning (if only implicitly) the actions of the Chinese government in Tibet.

F*CK all tyrants and bully governments. Free Tibet!

  13. Dennis Howlett

During the London protests, reporters in China showed there was zero coverage in China of those protests. Chinese people unanimously put the view that there should be a clear separation between the Olympics and politics. We may not agree but if we don’t, doesn’t mean to say we’re right. Just as the UK and US are two great countries separated by a common language, something we don’t always remember, I’d ask how often anyone in this debate even bothers to think about cultural differences with any degree of sensitivity or attempts to walk in others’ shoes?

  14. Frank Church

Allegiance should be to your fellow earthlings, not some theoretical lines drawn by the power hungry politicians.

“Patriotism” and “nationalism” are the tools used by tyrants everywhere. Take the “USA Patriot Act”, it is a complete insult to the founding fathers of the US, and humanity in general.

  15. Gubbi

Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

  16. Chris Nixon

…I would also warn against accusing anyone of blind nationalism…there are many western counties who’s blind allegiance to their own country is FAR more obvious.

Just to be fair and respect the sovereign rights!

  18. Sam B

@11: Well, adding a F— China icon is an extremely bad way to tell the Chinese that it’s not China you’re against but the government. Maybe F— The Chinese Government?

The thing is, while China’s government is undoubtedly corrupt and abusive, there is no doubt that elements of the protest are more about hatred of China than love of Tibet. Many, if not most of those excoriating China couldn’t even find Tibet on a map, they’re just using it as another stick to beat China with. They’re more concerned with American manufacturers than Tibetan monks.

  19. Frank Church

    @Chris Nixon,

Being a true libertarian, this is a hot button issue for me. I’ll forgive your typos and just guess what it was you were trying to say. Here’s my response:

Ignorance of anyone does not excuse ignorance of anyone else.

@Chloe, “Just to be fair and respect the sovereign rights!”
Except those of Tibet, right? Nice double standard. Have fun with your tyranny.

  20. johns

Surprised Bushco and the neocons never thought of this to go along with mandatory flag lapel pins. Could be a requirement for all patriotic American’s. Those who refuse to participate get shipped off to Gitmo.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about this all story. A lot of people ask for a ” Free Tibet” but nobody wants that. Not the Dalai Lama, not the Chinese government, not the rest of the world but a few people who have never been in Tibet. It’s more about “greater autonomy”. What do you say about Basque Homeland in Spain or Corsica in France asking for the same thing(at least a part of the population ask for that)?
Anyway, it seems now that both sides know how to use internet (specially in China where IM is really widely used).

  25. alex

Your guys know nothing about China! Do you think we are idiot? No, you are. Do you wanna know the truth? Go to: http://www.anti-cnn.com
Here you will find the ANSWER!!!

  26. exapted

It seems that Chinese in mainland China are quite proud and want their slice of the pie. To be fair, China is probably improving as well as it can.

I don’t think “Love China” means that everyone agrees with the way the communist party operates.

I would get annoyed if a bunch of Americans started putting “Love America” in their IM usernames. I do get annoyed when I hear “God Bless America” - “Love America” wouldn’t be quite as annoying.

Anyway “Love China” is an interesting viral meme, albeit somewhat obnoxious.

  27. jwijgerd

I visit China (Chengdu, Sichuan Province) regularly for my job (in fact, I am there now) and I can tell you that the Chinese people I regularly meet (wel educated, talented young people) are very nationalistic!

As a Chinese who has been in Europe and United States for more than 5 years, the only thing I would like to say is “Just go to China and take a look at what’s happening in China today”

for those people who have not been to China yet, please just shut up and go away. You guys all had well education , do not you know without seeing the reality, there is nothing you can judge.

I am not saying China is perfect now, but all bad things are happening in the rest of the world as well. be understanding.

Tibet is a part of China since 1000 years ago and all history information proved this fact.

Last word, go to China and check it out by yourself. You will be amazed how wonderful China is today!

  30. Peter

Who wants to start the “Love Tibet” ‘virus’? I reckon a few million people sporting that icon would start an interesting (but potentially dangerous) international debate.

  31. Chris Nixon

@Frank Church I wasn’t trying to excuse the ignorance in any way…far from it. You’ve missed my misspelt point. If you see my first post you will know my stance on the issue is very clear.

I’m just saying that you can’t have a go at these kids for being proud of their country. I’m proud of mine…but as a Scotsman that comes with an inherent criticism too. They are mistakenly seeing the criticism of China’s human rights record as a criticism of China or of the Chinese.

There are MANY western countries who’s citizens blind nationalism is equally, if not more obvious. This is not an excuse…it’s just not a fault that should be thrown solely at China.

  32. Aweb

    So pathetic…

    (L) China!

  34. Tom

@ all the chinese people saying how great china is

Im sure its very nice, but you seem to be missing the point, its sinister how you are all so in love with the idea of China. Its even more sinister how the masses of chinese people rally to back the government and official position by mass online efforts such as this. People in the West aren’t all ganging up together to “bully” china, we just have a free media who can say what they want!

  35. Cyn

Hey, don’t think Chinese are stupid. You make such insulting comments only because you know nothing about China. If you don’t know the history and only be able to see one-side, you d better just shut your mouth up and leave us alone.

We show (L) China cuz we LOVE China and we are the family and we are not allowed to be torn apart especially by some idiots know nothing about us who just making blind judgement!

  36. Heather

for god’s sake why do you still believe the chinese are getting information ONLY from chinese media? The protests against western media were initiated by tens of thousand oversee chinese who witnessed the biasd view on BBC & Co., they then translated those distorted reports into chinese and spread them through thousand chinese BBS, forums and blogs. The media IS allowed to criticize chinese government, but not spreading rumor!

  37. Ghaus

To all those who say that Chinese are killing people and have bad Human Rights record should first think just how many civilians Americans have killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and their Israeli dog is killing daily in Palestine, nobody is talking about this. Huh !
Why do you people always talk about freeing Tibet ? America should free Texas then they should talk about freeing Tibet.

    Love China !

By the way I am a Pakistani. :)

  38. Ehsan

The West and there Govt doesn’t have to Babysit the Chinese first deal with your own Human rights issues in Guantanamo and the other issues which i will not like to mention here , Why the F*UK do you care about what happens there , its there country let them deal with it , nobody asks USA to do things differently why should you , although i am not Chinese but i Just added a Love China Icon into my MSN :)

  39. anon

for those guys who claim “free tibet”, just watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIXoHkUlYNY

I am a Chinese in Guangzhou, South China. I don’t like way the communist party of China operate, but I like my country and am proud to be Chinese. I am not a member of the communist party.

I ever visited India and Singapore and I can really find the weakness which China has, but it is really improving fast day and night

To see is to believe. Just come to China by yourself, then you can have a right and fair judge on it.

I am also planning to visit USA and Europe this second half year.

  41. Sanz

    Tom (response 33):
I’m a pure Chinese in China mainland.
First, you are wrong about “all chinese people saying how great china is”. We all know that, even though we are making rapid progress in most respects, we are still far behind mainstream of this world. Another point we are sure is that China is far far from what you think.

Secondly, I do not know one single person here “in love with the idea of China”, if you mean political ideas. Do you think you are in love with your government all the time? But it is very true that most of us are in deep love with our country, or as a nation.

Thirdly, yes here is the masses of us recently. I am also involved. But, in fact, we are not supporting our government, but our country! This campaign is not sponsored or initiated by the government, otherwise, personally I would not take part in it. We are angry at the disgusting way those medias/blogs distorted the truth, especially when most of us want to have a successful Olympic game here. Also it is difficult for you to convince us that big medias have nothing to do with your government at all.

Fourthly, we are sure that most West people do not have enough reasons to hate Chinese at all. But you do not know what those politicians think behind the stage. (have you ever tried to think deeper inside?) Yes your media are free to say what they want. But do you think they are free to start rumors and we are not free to defend ourselves?

By the way, there are so many people frequenting West media almost everyday here, particularly well-educated people. How many Western people are trying to understand more about China?

I answered you because I think you are reasonable. I won’t even waste my time to arguing with those like “Frank Church”.

  42. elNico

Oh great…another self-obsessed can’t-do-no-wrong global bully all huffing and puffing…

  43. Henry Shen

    to anon,

do not believe any thing in video, it’s the people who made it.

just go to Tibet and talk to them, you will find out what the the truth is!!!

  44. Roy

I categorically disapprove of any entity that intends to filter the free flow of information.

    China, Comcast, etc.

Human rights are important, too, I guess, but I’m far less informed on that topic.

  45. The Mad Hatter

@Frank Church: I guess all those people who have slapped I L New York bumper stickers on their cars over the years should be treated with the same level of condemnation, then. Or how about all those Americans wearing American flags on their lapels? Doesn’t that mean they’re supporting the most repressive American government in modern history?

China is a complex, fascinating country with an unappealing government. Sort of like the U.S.

    Free Iraq!!!!!!!!!!!
