Yahoo Provokes Microsoft With Google AdSense For Search Trial

Mark Hendrickson

In what can only be interpreted as a move in its extended chess match with Microsoft, Yahoo has decided to run a two-week-long trial of Google’s AdSense for Search.

The limited test will see Google placing ads alongside no more than 3% of Yahoo’s search result pages in the US. While Yahoo claims to be simply “exploring strategic alternatives to maximize stockholder value”, the company is obviously trying to convince shareholders that a merger with Microsoft would be sub-optimal by showing how well an alternative partnership with Google monetizes.

Yahoo is eager to point out that the trial will not necessarily blossom into a long-term relationship with Google. And so the pushing continues…

and soon shareholders will understand that adsense makes more money than panama and will wonder why the other 97% of pages cannot get the same revenue bounce…and furthermore, why yahoo squandered a massive investment on panama when it could have lit up these higher revenues with little to no cost two years ago….

  2. Zach Katkin

The Daily Show had a small segment yesterday called “Dick Move,” this definitely calls for the purple penis. This is quite a kick in the face to Microsoft.

  3. Jeremy

    This can’t be happening.

Seriously. I know people that helped *build* panama. It was their baby.

Zad was so disconnected it’s a wonder he didn’t get fired, and instead resigned…but, seriously, is this the way forward for the company with the 2nd largest search market share???

They have NO way of lowing their cost per ad that they serve, OR increasing their ad revenue?

I think this is the official “Yahoo has no options” and their stock is going south, fast…

  4. Blue Sunshine

Yahoo: “What did the five fingers, SAY TO THE FACE!?”

    Pretty much sums it up.

Very interesting… Yahoo selling to Google or what… :-o

    Quirky! :-|

  7. Emea

That move will finish hurting their brand. You have to be insane in order to place adsense on yahoo search results. It doesnt seem the best way to gain confidence among shareholders about their ability to deliver the new ad plataform they have been raving about.

  8. James Wang

Frankly at this point, I kinda wish Yahoo would just buckle already, because it isn’t doing anything truly productive it seems. All its moves are purely to frustrate microsoft, which is only helping Google to do even better, which may or may not be bad depending who you talk to, I kinda think it would be neat to see the buyout. I feel bad for the people who would all be displaced, but I’m sure many are jumping ship already anyhow.

  9. mike

Ive never understood companies that try to compete with their competitors and end up using their competitors products all the whilst still wanting to compete.

this is just killing yahoo’s credibility, and putting money into googles pockets. Do they not understand that if you build something and launch it takes time , money , effort and alot of pain.

Feel bad for the teams that spend all their time making the panama system.

  10. YouYap.com

Not sure why use someone else product if you going to compete with them. Why not develop your own.

Also with microsoft takeover, I think Yahoo just want to see how far there can push it and microsoft is trying to bully Yahoo into selling. The new dead line microsoft set is part of bluff and I am sure there will renogotiate. I am sure after the deadline, Yahoo will counter offer.

yahoo is just being childish with all this pranks
I dont think that there is anything wrong in the deal for yahoo as for yahoo it is gd for their shareholders
IMO it is a bad deal for microsoft
yes yes yahoo gets a lot of eyeballs but then again the crappy products they come out with microsoft could hire rock star programmers and get better things done
well the only reason i think microsoft is taking a gamble with yahoo is only because of the eye balls as microsoft might have something in their workshop like a better search engine then google maybe ;) and they just need users for it and they are just buying a whole lot of beta testers for it by buying yahoo

yahoo guys just sell out and go on vacations youll have done your share of gd work now move on

  12. person2

@mike - you’ve got it right my friend! That’s it for Yahoo!

  13. mongan

    I don’t know what’s killing Y! employee morale more… MS deal or Y! management’s stupidity!!!

I don’t mind Y! wanting more money from MS… but this is just destructive.

Y! is looking more & more like Hillary here!

  14. bernie lomax

This proves Yahoo is not a tech company but a mere publisher. Secondly, you guys are f’n laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate to the party on this story.

  15. bernie lomax

Get over Panama…what did it do in 2 years? You know what the Yankees do if they don’t make the playoffs for two years - make changes. This is change.

  16. lora

I think that it is very strange for competitors to deal…
And Yahoo is a different company in comparison to Google..

Yahoo is acting ridiculous right now.

  18. Sina

This is an excellent tactical move.

Yahoo is going to get a lot of information about the depth of Google’s ad inventory, and very detailed information about Adwords performance. This could help show where their own system is lacking, and also reveal weaknesses in Google ad serving.

At the same time, they find out how much more they could be making if they used Google’s ad inventory. Panama’s smaller ad inventory limits their potential advertising revenue, and using Google’s revenue numbers will help in bargaining with Microsoft for a better price.

Microsoft are going for the “stuff money down your throat” technique; it’s only fair that Yahoo should respond appropriately.

  19. newssweb

Well Yahoo is in content business and Google is in Search, : that’S a perfect synergy!

  20. hyloka

    @sina

If Google’s stupid enough to let Yahoo have access to any information that could hurt Google if Microsoft eventually buys Yahoo, or if Yahoo decides to go away and revamp it’s system, then we should all short Google right now!

  21. JGuy

Its obvious Yahoo thinks a merger with MS will be a disaster. I personally think it will be also. But Wall Street wants this deal to happen, cause they look at the short term. If they merge, Google can sit back and watch the microhoo self destruction. AOL Time Warner redux.
If i were Balmer I’d do the following:

    -Cut the zune(its a loser)
-Spin off search, ads into its own company(with microsoft owning like 25%)
-focus on the POS operating system known as Windows.

And I’d do a lot more too. But those are starters.

  22. Sina

    @hyloka

If the ads are being posted on the Yahoo site, I imagine Yahoo would be able to find out some way to get some pretty revealing data on Ad usage behavior. And I’m sure Google would be prepared to share some data if it could lead to Yahoo switching to their platform.

And I don’t think Google mind too much if Microsoft see the data. Adwords is so popular because it was first, I think Google knows that it will be very, very difficult for Microsoft to try and catch up. And adwords doesn’t “beta” many new features - I’m sure Google have more innovations around the corner that their existing ad data would reveal nothing about.

Or, if Google were really shrewd, they could use a dated or simplistic algorithm for ads displaying the Yahoo sites. That way there would still be a significant increase in revenue because of the larger ad inventory, but it wouldn’t reveal any information about their latest ad-serving algorithms. Though I doubt they’d feel the need to go that far.

  23. Sina

That middle sentence was a serious run-on. I’ve got to start proof-reading comments before I press “submit” :).

  24. Trace Johnson

I posted this story last week.

The IPO market is heavily leveraged to a strong market, and IPO’s will routinely get delayed when the stock market is showing weakness. So, in that instance, this is possibly too short a time horizon to look at.

The M&A valuations are more troubling, but two things:

    1) A weak market can cause more friction between the acquiring and acquired companies. See Microsoft & Yahoo.
    2) Investors losing money and compressed valuations is inevitable when you consider the herd mentality of VC investing. TC constantly charts the copycat competitors within a space - Green investing, mobile ad networks, thin-client instant messaging, casual gaming, etc. Many of these companies will become empty vessels for which larger companies will buy the software but pay no premium for an installed base of users or strong brand.

  25. Trace Johnson

wrong story. sorry for last post.

  26. Avichal

I think this is a smart move. It buys them time and gets them a short term revenue bump. What they really need to bank on is getting their own system in place and ramping it up to get to 90% of what Google can do; if they’re partnered with Google, they can demand granular data and swap out Google’s ads for Yahoo ads to measure monetization on different types of queries. If they can get their own monetization systems working well enough on search they can replace Google in a few years.

Also, don’t forget that display ads, content ads, branding ads, and other non-search ads are still a huge opportunity and in many ways very different from search advertising. Google’s strength there may make it open to attack in non-search advertising. Yahoo could have a great position in the marketplace if it can use Google to monetize its search and secure the #1 position in non-search, content, media, and social media oriented sorts of advertising.

There are still a lot of very smart people at Yahoo and they still have a shot in the long term if they avoid the Microsoft takeover.

  27. hyloka

    @avichal

Would have been an even smarter move if they would have done it last month and gotten the increased revenue into their Q1 results.

  28. Wes

I think this is a good move by Yahoo! There is nothing wrong in weighing things up. Lets see what happens after the trial period.

  29. Jim

I also believe this is a good move by Yahoo! It’s not a definitive deal and they’ll have data from a proven ad serving technology to show investors that MSFT’s offer was too low.

Sure, all the arguements can be made about the affect on morale and MSFT could just go it alone and hire star engineers to build their own system, but they haven’t and building such a system and optimizing it to compete effectively with Google would take many more years than purchasing Yahoo!. Remember, Google’s systems have been optimized over a period of almost 10 years.

And, to those who say Yahoo’s products suck. C’mon. I’m not going to completely disagree, but there’s a whole section of middle America who are still loyal to their products. Not everyone is Silicon Valley power user. Google hasn’t done so much better beyond search and all their products are just second generation Yahoo knock-offs except for their latest endeavors into mobile and social.

  30. Compaholic

It’s becoming quite obvious that Yahoo wants to sell if the price is right but ONLY if the buyer is not Microsoft. Now they’re just taunting them to gain additional press attention. Maybe gain the interest of another buyer.

When does Microsoft decide to take all that money they’ve been saving and build their own web empire?
