"This is stupid…

What we will have is a new generation of insecure people with no real social skills who are totally dependent on their gadgets.

If someone is interesting JUST SAY HI!!! :-D "

Your perception of what "social skills" are needs to evolve before you can understand why this is a good thing.

The ability to txt well to others quickly using a num-pad or QWERTY Keypad is a social skill.

The ability to drive well while txt'ing is a social skill. A skill that natural selection is going to fine tune in a heartbeat. ;)

Having the technical knowhow to actually turn on a computer, sign up for MSN, use an iPhone is a social skill.

Meeting people requires an initial event where it's possible for the lives of the two people will come together directly. This technology may increase the distances between friends and decrease the relative "quality" of their interactions but there will be more chances for friendship.

There's already a very good web app for the iphone for dating.

http://datingdna.com/iphone

Screenshot is here: http://www.datingdna.com/iphone/images/screenshot.jpg

I've been using Dating DNA for a few months now, and it's by far the best dating site I've ever used. They do a lot of creative things.

They also run on the Chumby.

Hi..i have seen the prototype of new mobile social networking tool called PingDings. These guys are very much developing this product and testing it 'under the radar'. Sign up at http://www.pingdings.com and you may just get an invite to be a beta tester.

Very nice post !

However, there is no need to invent a new social network (like a network for IPhone users), but people can use their preferred social network.

For example, one can fetch his Facebook profile into his mobile phone (as it is currently done by WiPeer (http://www.wipeer.com) and Peersonalizer (http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=6857349083) for laptops and then find out when his Facebook friends or friends of his friends are nearby.

In addition, it will be possible to perform queries that will be based on your prefetched profile.

[...] Michael Arrington says: A few years from now we’ll use our mobile devices to help us remember details of people we know, but not well. And it will help us meet new people for dating, business and friendship. Imagine walking into a meeting, classroom, party, bar, subway station, airplane, etc. and seeing profile information about other people in the area, depending on privacy settings. Picture, name, dating status, resume information, etc. The information that is available would be relevant to the setting - quick LinkedIn-type information for a business meeting v. Facebook dating status for a bar. [...]

Getting round the whole "running in the background" issue for iPhone social apps is crucial. Because if your not running the app all the time, how do you know who is around you? Its a deal killer for finding people near you...
I think I have figured out how they have done it. I was looking to do the same for a project I am working on.

Each iPhone has bonjour, and it announces a unique ID (MAC address) when its queried by another nearby device running bonjour... So, if you have a social app, but want to be able to view who is near you, and interact with them, even when they are not running the app, how do you do it?

Well, at initial registration time, you upload your user details to your server, and include that unique ID / MAC as well, tied to that UserID. That way, when someone running the client "sees" an iphone nearby, it can look up the MAC address, and see if its tied to a registered user. Presumably with their implementation if you then ping the user nearby you you see in the app, that user gets a regular email prompting them to open up the client...

most amusing:

quote: "Users can scroll through nearby users, and set filters for men, women or age ranges. If you find someone interesting you can pull up their profile and ping them. If they respond you can start a chat, on the phone or in person. Of course, they can also choose to block you."

you can block, you can't exactly stop them though, they're accross the room and not best pleased you just blocked them...

I see a flaw!
