Michael Arrington, Robert Scoble, and Steve Gillmor are on scene at Google Campfire One, the second developer event of its kind (the first was focused on OpenSocial).

No official word yet about what will be announced, but we’ve already published our speculations. Update: We’ve published the details of tonight’s announcement here.

Via Robert Scoble’s Qik stream, here is the first half of the event:

And the second half of the event:

Here are some pictures taken live at the event (more after the bump):

Scoble looks beautiful! That logo looks awesome. Can’t wait to hear more.

I didn’t realize Leah Culver was there. I was at FOWA, and got a chance to hear her speak. She was very good. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to meet her.

I’m guessing this is going to be Google bringing BigTable as SaaS a la Amazon SimpleDB.

That’s why it would, as Scoble said, only really impact developers but could sorta impact users, too.

Could be the beginnings of an all-out Google v. AWS war.

Of course, I could be (and probably am) wrong all together, but the pieces seem to fit together nicely.

Michael I saw you trying to run away from Scoble :)

Would the announcement shake the world… :-o

  7. Shawn Farner

Every city and town needs a Robert Scoble. He seems like a fun guy.

  8. michael @ qik

Wrong embed code, guys — that’s the video embed, not the channel embed. The right embed is on http://qik.com/scobleizer (right side of page - Channel embed)

    cheers,
    Michael

The UI looks a lot like the Google Analytics dashboard.

  17. Eric Whitney

More information consolidation, perfect. I hope in a year I can put in my SSN and they can tell me what I believe. It’ll be a lot easier than the way I’m figuring this out now.

  18. Michael Arrogantington

Laptops and wifi - now thats my idea of a camping trip!

  19. Jim McNelis

did not expect the live stream when I clicked through to this story. nice!

So if I’m a start-up, do I really want to have my code on Google’s system? How much access are they going to have to my code? Are they going to open source the solution so I can move things to another platform once I have scaled?

  21. Nik Kalyani

What’s with the 500MB…Gmail has more than 10X that? No photo or video apps, I guess.

  22. Kyle Mulka

Thanks for the live stream guys! Too bad I only caught the tail end of it. I’m interested in hearing more of the details on this, especially if there is any Google branding requirement and which pieces will end up being free or how much they will be. I wonder if I’ll be able to mix in other non-Google technologies in with the app. Going to read the other article now, and waiting for the full details at code.google.com

  23. Bob Warfield

Cool announcement Google made. Also cool to watch it on Scoble’s Qik Channel. That’s got huge ramifications, BTW.

But as to the platform, I think Google did very well. It’s a great start with lots of ramifications for the other players.

FYI: some video trouble cut out a section, hence the two vids.

  25. Dan

Hmm. I signed up at http://appengine.google.com/ but it says “Unfortunately, space is limited during Google App Engine’s preview release. As we expand, we’ll invite more developers, but for now you’ll have to wait.”

Did anyone get a message other than this when trying to signup?

  26. GQ

Google makes things easier so you can become Google’s bitch. Thanks, but no thanks! If I am going to months to write a webapp, I can spend a few weeks to make sure I can host the damn thing my self, with S3 and my own web servers. This will in no way harm Amazon, which will continue to be used by serious web developers. For idiots, and people who want to tie their web code to Google’s proprietary libraries and hosting solution that can’t be deployed anywhere but Google, which is by definition a copy of Microsofts ASP garbage, they can use Google’s system. The only way for Google to redeem themselves would be to Open Source their stack, seeing as that’s not happening, real web developers are not going to give this stack a chance! Google owns your code, data, and statistics, thanks, but I aint a bitch! Any serious business person would never give such a stupid business decision an iota of thought!

    @GQ

Theorem: All apps hosted on goog will be trivial.

    Proof:
Any serious app that can compete with goog cannot be hosted by goog itself.

got my invite. initial thoughts: simpler but not nearly as cool as aws. if we could use just the datastore from an outside hose it would be really useful, but as of now I’m sticking with aws.

  34. Robert Scoble

There was actually five videos. I linked to all five here: http://scobleizer.com/2008/04/.....-services/

  35. web hosting

Google has tried to do things apart from search but I don’t think it is most successful in different directions.

  36. vepa

I agree that logolooks like codeigniter (http://codeigniter.com/)
