This makes for an interesting case study in Web 2.0 - and we wonder why large organisations are wary about joining the conversation?!!

Shel and Robert Scoble have not helped the debate at all.

It seems to me that Robert got Shel the role at Fast Company TV - based on good old fashioned friendship and networking, not based on whether he was any good as an interviewer.

I agree with the points saying that to have a cup of coffee was disrespectful to the interviewee.

The video is not helpful for Jeremiah either - I personally can't stand the fellow as he is arrogant but I would not be impressed if that were my video.

Of course Scoble and Owyang come flying to Shel's defence here - how predictable.

What is the most amazing thing is that Shel was so dumb not to own his own domain name - the number one thing you should do if you are an author or speaker never mind being someone who is meant to be an expert in social media.

Secondly rule number 2 in social media is be careful of your digital footprint - his Twitter comments are there for anyone to read - I for one have taken screen shots and will use them as a case study of what not to do. He has certainly gone down in my estimation and i won't be referring anyone to the book.

Thirdly why on earth didn't he do as he I am sure teaches others and direct the conversation back to his blog (so poorly branded it is untrue as it's still got a Typepad domain name) not on the Twittersphere! Why on earth didn't his so called friends the gurus of social media give him some decent advice.

It's good to see these big headed so called experts being knocked off their pedestals for once.

I just wish they had not given more fuel to the fire for why companies should not engage online.

An apology about that would be helpful to the rest of us who are trying hard to engage people in social media.

You're right, there are lessons to be learned here; and while I respect your loyalty to Loren, I'd take issue with your statement that many "predictably" took sides with Loren. Many of us saw the link to his site, checked it out and rolled our eyes, never to return. Shel may be learning a new medium, but that's an easy target; there's plenty of us who'd prefer it to yet another video that gives us puerile cheap shots instead of actual wit.

I like Shel and read the book him and Scoble wrote, and I do recommend it.

Here is what we can learn from this situation. It is not suggested that doctors diagnose themselves. It is not suggested that lawyers represent themselves in court. Social media consulting during a crisis is best done subjectively, for others, not for ones self. Shel should have run his tactics through Scoble and Jeremiah first.

So, to say that Shel does not take is own advice is true, but he was too close to the matter, and it was too personal. A subjective 3rd party could have helped his situation.

I remember when Feldman made fun of Calacanis at the beginning of the fatblogging meme. Calacanis laughed it off, even commented in the video. He did handle it very well. And now that Arrington has become friends with Feldman, it show that he too has figured out how to defuse Feldman's hostility.

I heard Perez Hilton becomes friends with a lot of the very celebrities he makes fun of. Same thing here. Laugh if off and make friends with Feldman or choose to be pwned by him by crying about it.

How many years of Scoble videos and yet they keep getting worse, adding Shel into the mix. I have seen High School Cable Access productions of better quality. Scoble is set to ruin another brand -- Fastcompany should have looked into the guys resume, irrelevancy and destruction wherever he goes.

"@36 the racist thing is probably a reference to a previous controversy involving Loren. "

Aha! OK, thanks. :-)

Wasn't aware of the history there. Really seemed outta Left Field to me without the background.

@36 the racist thing is probably a reference to a previous controversy involving Loren. You can probably imagine that Lorens style applied to words about sensitive issues of race make for an explosive mixture, and this has happened a few times in the past. Whatever his motive, and whether you agree with specific things he says or not, we probably need people like Loren to talk about issues which others pussyfoot around. I guess the porn reference is to do with another controversy that I missed.

I dont really blog but I have attacked people on mesageboards & comments a few times. At the time it always feels like there is some higher point worth shouting about, that transcends individuals and makes any pain they may endure justifiable. I have mixed feelings in hindsight, maybe there was no point and it was just bad karma and pointlessly cruel. I found it hard to resist criticising Scoble on a few occasions where he didnt really seem to want naked conversations after all, or at least not ugly ones. So Id certainly agree with an important part of this story, that people who can harness social media effectively, and consider themselves knowledgable on it, should really have a watertight strategy for dealing with the ugly side of humans on the web.

Still on a certain level the whole web 2.0 thing is a bit silly really, and beyond the hype its unclear what is really there that will stand the test of time. So yes, more puppets please :)
