I agree with the people who say they hate the Snap Shots. They are one of the most annoying things since pop ups. How come people who put that crap on their sites don't realize how annoying it is to their visitors. They really should USE their site sometime, maybe then they might realize.

People who put Snap Shots on their site are easily impressed andthink they are being clever because they have something other sites don't have. Well newsflash, people don't put it on their site becuase they have suffered the annoyance of it on your site.

I am agree that there are some things Snap should work for. Hotshots should be more dynamic and user friendly. Snap should create option when people are able to find how many Shots specific URL received.
HotShots should be updated on a daily basis to see what's hot right now. What about widgets which will alow webmasters to copy HotShots and show them on their websites. I would love to have it in my Wordpress sidebar.
Moreover, HotShots should be integarated with Snap search and Snap Shots. It would be awesone to see how many shots url reveived in search and website preview.

Snap shots float my boat but that page looks crazy hard to see any real trends. I likes that MP3 example... in the post... listening to it now while typing away. Cool.

I hate Snap Shots so much... fortunately, the Snap team provides a way to turn them off (a cookie-based setting.)

Hi, Bill,

A few sites with Snap Shots:
NCAA.com
NYPost.com (sports blogs)
Information Architects (subway map)
TrendHunter
Guy Kawasaki
Panorama (Major Italian magazine)
plus WordPress, SixApart, and Xanga.

We publish in 48 languages and in pretty much every country around the world, covering every conceivable topic. We even power a number of search engines and, yes, Harry, even quite a few porn sites.

Other than TechCrunch, are there other reputable sites that use snap shots? I've always seen them as kind of spammy.

I do know that wordpress.com has them enabled by default when you create a hosted blog with them, but how many of those blogs would you be interested in seeing?

If they included the adult terms, then I would be here complaining how distasteful it was.

@Paul Angels, just an FYI:
When I go to snap, I have to allow javascript to run. No problem. but, unless I use I use snap's specified method (some link) to enable it, it still won't work unless I clear cookies and refresh.

Agree that it should be filterable by country. I think they need to aggregate enough data points (unless they have yahoo or google traffic, which I assume is not the case) so the hourly suggestion is not realistic. It looks like good fodder for new posts rather than talking about the same stuff in the current TC / Om Malik / TechXYZ knitting circle. That said, I agree with @7, if they were really gutsy they would include the porn and this would be the rage.

@6: I cannot speak for Everett but probably if I saw value. However, I would suspect it would be the same top keyword list over and over give or take the name of the celebrity(s)-of-the-month.

It would be interesting to see the disparity between the top adult terms and their non-adult term counterparts...especially for the search engine "hot lists". Most stats I have seen are disparate sources and hard to compare.

Harry "not a statitician but finds stats intriguing nonetheless" Wang

(How many spelling errors did I just make?)

Hi, couple of comments:

1. To the article, Erick's suggestions are well-put and are under consideration. A new page is in production and will be up very soon.

2. To #1, Mr. Wang--or is it Harold?--sorry, but we do filter out adult terms. If we created an adult version, would you subscribe? I'm sure Everett (#3) would.

3. To #2, one of the original referrers can be found under "Sample Page" in each listing. We deliberately don't chose the biggest when there are multiple referrers. We also don't have Digg, Slashdot, or Reddit in our network and so those have no direct bearing on our results.

There is no access the original referrers - but it would be extremely intriguing to discover WHAT SENT those users to those pages that had the snapshots.

Could this be a result of Digg or Slashdot or Reddit homepages.

It would appear that techies use Snapshots more than most, so the social bookmarking sites may be playing a greater role than normal.

Interesting how this SAAS brought Snap from virtual obscurity

What I want to know is: Do the providers of these "hot lists" like Google's Zeitgeist filter out all the adult oriented search terms before publishing these lists?
