Joi Ito Takes Lead At Creative Commons
by Michael Arrington on April 1, 2008

The five year old Creative Commons nonprofit organization announced a new CEO this afternoon as founding CEO Lawrence Lessig steps down: Joi Ito.

The organization is devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to legally build upon and share by creating consensus driven copyright license forms. Users can set terms for copyright usage without complex negotiations using CC approved licenses. These licenses restrict only certain rights (or none at all) of the work. The initial set of Creative Commons licenses was published on December 16, 2002.

In 2007 Lessig announced that he would be defocusing his attention on copyright law, and announced Change Congress, an organization to build support for government reform.

Joi Ito, who was born in Kyoto, Japan, is a well known investor and Creative Commons board member. Founding board member and Duke law professor James Boyle will become chair of the board, replacing Ito.

Great news for the CC movement … pages like jamendo (www.jamendo.com) are already filled with really good CC licenced music data. Might be a good way for the distribution of music in the future I think because too strict regulations on such an easily shareable product will not work at all in a digital world. At http://www.tunesBag.com, we’re already offering our users thousands of free-to-stream/download CC-licenced music files and it’s good to know it’s totally legal …

Great news to see Joi at the helm, looking forward to continued great leadership and big strides forward.

May the RIAA crash and burn.

I think trading the physical products like pre-owned Music Movies and Games online is also a good way of sharing without infringing copyright. trade2save will be launching this type of business in July, with the addition of electronics.

Hell, who knows if this is an April Fool’s Day joke but if not, Joi is the perfect person for the job.

PAC’s own the government we live under and make the laws that we live by. Its appalling and I’m elated to see someone doing something about it!

No one should be able to buy laws.

I hope he’s not as much a hypocrit has Lessig who’s own CC has the option for no modification but then he rants when people actually use those license options.
