-Fiorina is an incompetent corporatist hack, who rode the deformative action gravytrain to the top levels of the business bureaucracy. Having her in charge of anything tell all one needs to know about those that put her there.
- We need zero H1-B visas, now and forever. We do need a political class that will tell corporatists that they by God will train American citizens to do new and/or evolving jobs-at their(corporate) expense-and if they attempt to offshore work in response, they will be hurt very, very badly, on both a corporate and personal level. If they really don't like it, they're free to leave, of course, which means giving up American citizenship, physically getting out, and taking essentially just the shirt on their back with them.

I am very disappointed with Senator McCain’s association with Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman. What in the world is he thinking? Hasn’t anyone told him?

For those who may not remember or know, Fiorina was the C.E.O. of Hewlett Packard until 2005 when she was fired. Her most famous quote; No American has a God given right to a Job just because they were American. She fired tens of thousands of employees to then outsource jobs overseas. She managed to skip out of Lucent right before the Feds arrived and started the HP Boardroom investigation which connected to the scandal and the hostile culture she created at HP.

Whitman is currently embroiled in a boycott from the buyers and sellers who made eBay (a.k.a. greebay, feepay) successful. Seems like they want to have a cleansing of their members. The boycott calls for no buying or selling and the evacuating from eBay by May 1, 2008. The most recent faux pax is the conflicting story given for what many called ‘mystery auction listings’ mysteriously from the Shopping dot com site (sdc). Explanations started as a glitch in the system, changed to limited test that ran its course, changed to accident and back to a test. The SEC should love this investigation. Keep in mind, eBay’s stocks have been steadily sagging and Wall Street measures eBay based on listings. Can’t forget the current Paypal lawsuit; eBay has tied PayPal to be the only means one can buy/sell on eBay which violates the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

Fiorina and Whitman’s involvement with the Senator will surely guarantee a Democratic victory but then again both want to be the Governor of California so their motives are, usual for them, self serving.

Obama and Hillary are both economic socialists -- they're on the record saying they'll raise our taxes and cut our trade opportunities almost immediately upon taking office. Additionally, neither were leaders on the issue of immigration in Congress either, so how can you trust their position papers now?

If Obama or Hillary had any accomplishments to point to, I'd consider voting for them. McCain has a demonstrated career of working with Democrats, and has many pieces of important legislation bearing his name.

None of them have a clue about science, tech, or economics; neither McCain nor Carly nor Hillary nor O'Bama (hey, it's St. Patrick's Day). It's just terribly sad and scary that so many suckers would vote for or otherwise back such people.

Yes, Nag, the visa programs are causing harm. They should either be cut back and/or a moratorium placed on E-3, F, H-1B, J, and L guest-work visas for a few years. Since research from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Urban Institute, RAND Corp., Duke, Stanford, UC Davis, Georgetown, and Harvard, and a simple look at BLS employment projections and NCES degrees earned all show we've been producing far more brighte, knowledgeable, creative, productive US citizen STEM workers, and there's a huge pool of under-employed and undemployed US citizen STEM workers, even a 20 year moratorium would not produce a shortage. A visa is a privilege, and Americans have had to wait as long as 4 years just to get a passport, while US STEM workers have been unemployed for stretches that long, so you'll get little sympathy from me even if it takes you 10 or 15 years to pass a proper background investigation and get a green card.

My post got deleted too! Maybe it was because I commented on how Fiorina doesn't really say anything specific or of substance about McCain's stances on tech issues (at least twice in the interview she said she hasn't 'had that discusion with him yet' about a specific issue)

Maybe it was because I commented on how scary McCain's self-admitting lack of tech savvy and knowledge at a personal level would be for a President (in the interview they mention he isn't an "everyday computer-user")

But it was probably because I was laughing at Arrington's own link #18 where Andrew from CV asks "is Michael Arrington the Katie Couric of tech blogs?".

LOL censorship at TC all China-style. Wheee.......

Yes, I am extremely angry. How can you let her get away with dismissing Lantos like that or comparing a concern with human rights to outdated export controls?

I expect more from you than that. At least I used to. Between Lacy and this, I'm not so sure what I should be expecting.

Take a page from Judy Miller:

Rule#1 - Don't get too close to your subjects, especially when politics are concerned.

Rule #2 - It doesn't matter how big a deal your subject is, treat them like a person. Flattery gets you nowhere, accountability will get you where you need to go: the story.

What *is* your position on China, Michael Arrington and hey, could you tell us what *is* Obama's position on China! I cry fake here. You touch the bases by describing the problem of Yahoo handing over dissident information, but you do not *take a position*. What is YOUR position please. I want you to stop asking questions that we already know are questions and outlining not the grey areas, but what you think.

I'm going to become a McCain Democrat in about five minutes, Michael Arrington if you cannot tell me *what you think* and what Obama's position is, and why you think it is "better".

John McCain hasn't met a globalist program he didn't like. He said he was a free trade maniac. Well, free trade includes tons of h1bs and L1s - anything the Fortune 500 wants, John will make sure they get.

But before you all get too excited - Hillary was Chairwoman of the US - India Friendship Caucus which is all about offshoring and visas, and Mr. Obama is taking tiny steps because he knows Microsoft gives big campaign money to democrats. I'm afraid under the different suits your going to find pretty much the same thing when it comes to jobs and the economy.

As long as big business can keep the politicians in TV time they are going to do what the CEOs want - and that is to keep labor costs down (except theirs), no matter what the cost to this country.

If you think the recession is due to mortgage collapses - thats only part of it - the long term effects of an unbalanced trade and good jobs being offshored will be the widening of the gap between the rich and poor and the decimation of the middle class. Welcome to the 3rd world.

It's interesting that Fiorina has gone in to politics so soon. When she was at HP and the end was obvious, people were already speculating that she had political ambitions. This shows that the speculators were right - she wasn't heading up HP to be a good CEO, but to do it as a stepping stone to public office. Given her abysmal performance at HP, I suspect she's joined the right party.

MA wrote "I just wish Powell had run for president back in 96."

The reason you wish that is because you don't know enough about him. He never got close enough to power for his dirty laundry to be exposed (or he was given a pass due to his race.) If you do a little research on him, I guarantee you won't like what you read.

The solution is not more h1 visas but a stronger education over all and better technical orientations. The other day I spoke at one of my kids' classroom (2nd grade). I decided to "teach" them some basic Calculus and was surprised that most kids in that class LOVED Math - I know my kid does. So, when is it that they teach these kids to hate Math and the rest of the sciences?

Will McCain strengthened out education? I do not know. But I think he has a better platform to even attempt it.

tech issues are minor. Iraq and economy are the biggest issues. h1-b scheme to flood tech labor pool and depress wages is going to come back and bite these companies real hard in next 5-10 years as talent will be going to other fields. Same thing happened with outsourcing.

Pete,
Yes, it will be a tough one to fix. But really wish there is some solution to it.

Just FYI : Year 2007.

Every year Starting on April 1st( The first working day of April) people can start applying for H1B Visa and last year just the first day there were around 120K applications. Of which only 65,000 needs to be selected.

One more beast is the Green Card’s, hopefully they will increase the VISA numbers for Green card. I myself was waiting for the past 4 years.

Just hoping for the best.

I am glad Mike has a mention in his post, and hope fully some day about GC also.

Cheers, Nag

The problem is mccain is clueless on tech so he needs all the help he can get. He has been saying for years to the people of Arizona that he is not computer savvy and he prefers his pen and paper. I believe he also said that to forbes or fortune in the last couple of years.

There's another interview with Her Worship, La Fiorina, on the Business Week site at http://tinyurl.com/2hdpou. Comments for that interview are at http://tinyurl.com/28xp57

As I noted there, this Democrat is very pleased with McCain's choice of Carly Fiorina, increasing my confidence that a Democrat will be taking the oath of office in just 308 more days. Carly likes to schmooze with CEOs and rock stars (remember the HP iPod?), but has no love and apparently no ability to handle day-to-day operations.

I spent 19 months at HP (through an acquisition) during her reign, and I have rarely encountered such a dysfunctional company. Much of my time was spent coordinating with other business units rather than actually developing and shipping our own [software] products.

McCain has said that the US might have a presence in Iraq for the next 100 years. I'm pretty tired of the deaths, destruction, and the occupation over the past five years, not to mention the $2 billion that vanishes every day we are there.

I'm just waiting for the photo op of Carly and her perfect hair in some East LA barrio, an Appalachian coal town, or Cleveland's rough Hough district explaining Sen. McCain's economic plans.

Mike - It's excellent that the candidates are adding tech experts to their campaigns, and totally great that they are reaching out to you/allowing you to interview them. I just have one complaint, that they would speak more frankly with you. Too many of the answers were non answers. That may work for the general public, but we really want to know what they think about these issues.

Mike,
Very nice post. I only used to read TECH from your posts. For the first time i have read the full post

Nice to see u covering all the aspects of the society.

Good job..

H1's is a very sensitive topic, i don't think anyone is going to talk on this(other than the CEO's ) till the elections are over.

Cheers, Nag
