We're looking for a wiki... still haven't found a really great one.

Google Sites: Don't like the permissions controls or evil TOS.
PBWiki: Don't like the price.
WikiSpaces: I forget why.
MediaWiki on our own servers: That might be the answer.
The list goes one.

Thanks for all the great comments guys. Of course I love PBwiki best, but consumers are lucky in that there are a good number of decent alternatives.

For example, PBwiki is hosted-only, so folks who want to run their own server can choose one of the many open-source wikis available.

A few specific responses:

Luis: "How do content producers benefit from their wiki site contributions?"

Most of our content producers are focused on internal collaboration. The main benefit is being able to work together more efficiently and effectively.

For public wikis, the usual motivation is adding to a helpful resource. For example, the Twitter wiki (http://twitter.pbwiki.com/) is a community-produced resource to help people get more out of Twitter.

Raul: "I evaluated most of these for our marketing team. Clearspace by Jive Software is by far the best of the lost. Polished, feature rich and yet easy to use."

I would love if you got in touch with me to share some of these specifics. We realize that no product (including PBwiki) is perfect, and I think other services are a great source of ideas.

Thanks all!

I've watched pbwiki grow since day 1. They really are becoming a great service and I love the new features. We have taken a slightly different approach (shameless plug) and created group shared communities, although now wikis they are similar in concept. We have created one for TechCrunch as a test to show what we can do. Please check it out at: http://techcrunch.onmycity.com

Good Luck!

I evaluated most of these for our marketing team. Clearspace by Jive Software is by far the best of the lost. Polished, feature rich and yet easy to use. Confluence is another one that stood out. Dekiwiki is also a very interesting and fast developing open source alternative.

@Josh #6,

I think you mean MindTouch Deki Wiki. :-) Yes, to my knowledge with our 2,000+ daily downloads and our recently announced free and ad-free hosted site: MindTouch htttp://wik.is , which receives hundreds of registrations a day I would say we are indeed the fastest growing and the dominant force in the Enterprise / Business wiki space. Seems strange to me too that we were not mentioned. Alas, it's the go go blogosphere... :-(

This article at The Standard about MindTouch is one of the more referenced and researched articles I've read: http://snurl.com/21qiq

PbWiki is cool as you can play Super Mario Flash there!

The Internet does everything! TV, movies, phone, allow us to wake each other up and now play Nintendo games! Nintendo better jump on this ship - so much do to in this space! Ads in the game - interact with the ads... possibilities are endless

Here is a link to Super Mario Flash....

I have started several PBWiki wikis for people with a variety of skill levels, and they take to it quickly. This service is a painless introduction to the wiki way.

The other advantage to PBWiki is that they manage to keep the wiki spam problem under control. Google's web and blog hosting projects have been full of spam.

Kudos PBWiki, but something much more simple, while still a Wiki, is needed for the "rest of us".

It is not 500 000 Wikis that will exist, it is 1 000 times that number. Each one of us needs one. http://virteal.appjet.net/wiki
