MySpace Opens Up The OpenSocial Spigot: App Gallery Goes Live

Today is the first chance most people will get to actually see an OpenSocial app working on MySpace. The MySpace developer platform, which was first rumored waaaay back in October 2007 and announced shortly afterwards, throws its gates open to users today, about five weeks after the social network let developers begin building and testing their apps using OpenSocial.

When the platform was soft launched on February 4th, developers were told they had a month to develop their applications before more than a maximum of ten users could install them at a time. Now the user caps have been lifted and an application gallery called MySpace Apps has been rolled out. While MySpace won’t yet promote the gallery, any user that makes his or her way there will find all applications that have been approved for safety, following their terms of service, abiding by their guidelines, etc.

MySpace says it’s hard to say how many applications will be available as the platform enters this second phase, especially since they are still rapidly approving them as I write. However, we’re told that approved applications will not number in the thousands, despite the fact that over 5,000 developers have participated in the platform thus far.

This news of MySpace’s progression with OpenSocial comes on the same day as Hi5’s announcement that it will launch an OpenSocial platform on March 31st.

They have such a long way to go.

I really think that myspace should be completely demolished and rebuilt.

  2. 113.com

Easy navigation.. not enough categories? (eg., Filers / Online Storage, any?)

I agree with Jesus above. They should really re-think their functionality to complete with the competitors

Haha, only in internet time does ~5 months ago qualify as a quad-a ‘waaaay’ :-)

  9. OwlBoy

Why does that page look a lot like the facebook page that does the same thing?

Whoa, I just logged into my Myspace account, still have +500 friends but the newly installed activity feed was last updated February 26th… I wonder why none of my friends are active?

    Oh yeah, Facebook.

  11. Ryan Merket

    “One more thing…”

Myspace forgot one key ingredient — no Messaging API — hard to build social widgets on a social network with no social interaction. ZING!

  12. Jughead

Can you say, “Social Games Frickin’ Bonanza!!!”

  13. Frank Church

@11, Whoa I just didn’t log into my non-existent Myspace account. I wonder why none of my friends didn’t either?

    Oh yeah, real, live friends.

  14. Ryan Merket

@13 - Maybe you need “live friends” that know how to use the internet? Because all of my Facebook friends are people I have met. Totally different story on Myspace, I get friend requests from spam bots all day long.

  15. Ryan Merket

Oh, you might be asking yourself, “self, how does someone possibly have +500 friends.” College + Social Networks = lots of friends. Crazy, huh?

Finally…still waiting on orkut & open social..

A lot of people have openly complained about how pathetic the opensocial platform is compared to facebook. As someone whos developed on both, I actually was pleasently surprised with myspace. I generally am not a myspace fan, but compared to orkut and the other opensocial containers, they at least built a semi decent dev platform. Andy while developing on Myspace has its share of challenges, with a little creativity you can pretty much do anything there that you would have on Facebook.

For some examples of apps similar to facebook apps you could check out our travel mapping app:

Last night our German movie review app was running fine at:
    http://www.myspace.com/moviemates

However, this morning we saw that MySpace had suspended our app because we had ads in it that were linking to outside of MySpace. That was given to us as the reason for the suspension.
That these ads are not allowed was not stated in any of the usual documentation.
Apparently many other apps suffered the same apps as there are hundreds of posts in this regard on the developer site.

  23. Applications easily hacked!
