Yahoo In Discussions To Join Google OpenSocial
by Michael Arrington on March 11, 2008

Yahoo is in late stage discussions with Google to join their OpenSocial platform, says a NYTimes story from earlier this evening. Multiple sources at both Yahoo and Google confirm to us that discussions are happening, but won’t say when an announcement might be made or even that a final decision has been made.

This would be a major win for Google, which has already enticed MySpace and other big partners to a platform that launched less than five months ago. OpenSocial is a defense by Google and it’s partners against the runaway success of Facebook Platform, itself less than a year old. Both platforms allow third parties to create applications that will run on OpenSocial partner sites, or Facebook, as the case may be.

If and when it is announced, look for it to come through the corporate technology group (under new CTO Ari Balogh). Yahoo platform and technical announcement always come through this group.

wats so special about joining the OpenSocial thingy that they need to be having talks? isnt it supposed to be a simply integration thing?

wonder what will happen when (not if) MS buys Yahoo..

@ olubi: open social is kind of big deal…or more like a big alliance against facebook which has it’s own proprietary language (fbql)

open social is kind of a java type promise…build once, deploy everywhere(all the social networks)

although i am not sure how yahoo plans to use web applications…..maybe they are finally realizing their potential to offer social apps though their huge(250 million ) email user base.

i really feel bad about MS’s bid, since it came at a point when jerry yang was getting ready to strike back (people, give him a break…he just asked for 100 days)….it’s all semel’s fault…burn him at the stakes!!!

I agree this is a HUGE win towards Google, and a little chip against Facebook. You watch, one day Facebook will cave and join Open Social…maybe.

@ #3:

“burn him at the stakes!!!”

StakeS? What, as in chop him up, and then burn him at multiple stakes? Bit harsh, isn’t it?

wait a minute, yahoo does not have a successful social network so far, all their attemps failed, 360, mash, etc, why they want to join open social now?

mebes yahoo does it to make life awkward for MS - who own a steak in FB?
>>MS investing in two rival/competing platforms?
>>>>pressure on MS to integrate them?
>>>>>>FB join opensocial?

steaks in FB are rare btw

Possessive “its” for the win.

As we can see, by way of this, that Yahoo! is a great company and knows its own strength (and weakness)… :P

I guess I should really get my app made.

Hello everybody, Just to say Hello….

What benefits for bloggers from this deal?

If/When Yahoo gets owned by Microsoft - Yahoo will fall like a brick with no friction. People simply dislike Microsoft - it’s too 90s; They have to make a total shift, meditate, get an enlightening experience - I donno, but it has to be a a huge self-awareness experience.

Looks more like a defensive move against Microsoft to me.

Also, OpenSocial seems like a great idea but I have yet to see it change the way I use the interwebs.

Are there ANY useful OpenSocial Apps for the sites I use (LinkedIn, Plaxo, Blogger, Twitter, etc)?

Google’s new pattern: outsouring protocol desing for FREE :)
