@ lemonobrien

I have a graduate degree in journalism - and started programming in 1984...none of that focuses on the issue that happened at the conference with her interview.

It was a poorly done interview - no preparation (it appeared), a lack of understanding about the audience and a weak job at taking care of the source in a professional way.

Be shitty all you want - the reality is, it was a whiff. The end of the world? No. But definitely a three-strike, sit-down whiff.

If your best defense of a journalist is that the person being interviewed thought it was okay - then you FAIL when it comes to understanding what journalism is.

I watched the interview and it was ridiculous. She flirted with him half the time and attempted to add her own jokes that were basically making fun of him. That's great that they may have a long relationship or spoken many times but she did not shed a light on him as a CEO. He sounded embarrassed with the one story she told about him and he tried to wrangle her in when she got very off topic. This should be a sign to the interviewer how he wants it to be conducted. When the crowd called her out, Mark tried to smooth the tension, since she was yelling "Jesus Christ". She could of politely calmed down while he finished his answer to the attendees question. But she just gets more mad and then brings it up 2 more times ending the interview with "sorry i put you guys through an hour of torture, geez, send me an email to tell me why it was so bad!" (at which point someone yelled "give me your email address")

"Sure, there were a couple of moments where the crowd yelled out, but that is absolutely normal at tech events these days."

Really? I've been to SXSW four times and @media once, and have *never* seen it. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I'm not about to wade through 204 comments to see if this has been covered, but as far as I'm concerned, the most telling Twitter post all day came from Ms. Lacy herself:

 http://twitter.com/sarahcuda/statuses/769000309

That's a nuclear fucking fail, if I've ever seen one.

Having actually been there, its wasn't the "back of the room" being dissatisfied, as many people are trying to spin it. It was the whole room. I get that Mark Zucker is shy, but telling a story about him being covered in sweat, shouting out to a friend in the audience, and failing to ask follow up questions (or even questions at all, stories don't count) isn't the audiences fault, it's the interviewers. She failed.

@203. Cite one example? Sure. Here's a quote from comment #10 It's just one example...

"She called him a kid a few times, questioned Facebook’s valuation in a way that wasn’t inquisitive... she disrepected her interviewee. The crowd noticed and wouldn’t let her forget it... The crowd picked up on that and that’s what triggered that awful feeling of awkwardness watching the interview."

This quote exemplifies the poor judgement of many people in the room. I understand it's how they *felt*, but it's still a lack of judgement. They totally misread what was happening on stage, and the quality of the interview. And they behaved badly, like whiny eight year olds that lack the social skills to do anything other than scream and shout when they don't get exactly what they want.

The truth is that Zuckerberg didn't feel that Lacy disrespected him. Neither did he feel belittled by her. Nor did he feel awkward about Lacy's interview style. That's because Lacy had no intention of disrepecting or belittling Zuckerberg, or of making him feel awkward.

In fact, Zuckerberg felt that Lacy asked him interesting questions. He likes her interview style, and thinks that she's a generally smart person that he enjoys working with. Like the majoriy of people who have read this thread and voted, Zuckerberg feels that the way the the audience treated Lacy was wrong.

@203. Cite one example? Sure. Here’s a quote from comment #10 It’s just one example…

“She called him a kid a few times, questioned Facebook’s valuation in a way that wasn’t inquisitive… she disrepected her interviewee. The crowd noticed and wouldn’t let her forget it… The crowd picked up on that and that’s what triggered that awful feeling of awkwardness watching the interview.”

This quote exemplifies the poor judgement of many people in the room. I understand it’s how they *felt*, but it’s still a lack of judgement. They totally misread what was happening on stage, and the quality of the interview. And they behaved badly, like whiny eight year olds that lack the social skills to do anything other than scream and shout when they don’t get exactly what they want.

The truth is that Zuckerberg didn’t feel that Lacy disrespected him. Neither did he feel belittled by her. Nor did he feel awkward about Lacy’s interview style. That’s because Lacy had no intention of disrepecting or belittling Zuckerberg, or of making him feel awkward.

In fact, Zuckerberg felt that Lacy asked him interesting questions. He likes her interview style, and thinks that she’s a generally smart person that he enjoys working with. Like the majoriy of people who have read this thread and voted, Zuckerberg feels that the way the the audience treated Lacy was wrong.

Can you cite one example of something of substance from a comment by someone who was at the keynote that supports the general conclusions of people who weren't there?

At first I thought it was unfair, but the more I thought about it and after watching her interview later I started to agree with everyone else.

She was interviewing herself about how she knows Mark. Secondly, flirting is good. Jumping a guy on stage (which it was close to), not so much.

And yeah, "from what you can gather" does not make great news.

Also, watching the video doesn’t tell you where in the audience the sound/boos/titters were coming from. I don’t think we have any 7.1 Dolby EX sound from keynote available yet. I was there and it wasn’t coming from some plotting sexist saboteurs the back of the room.http://www.china-kitchen-cabinets.com/ is blog for the video

I was there live, but in the overflow room for http://www.watchhandbag.com. I wasn’t following twitter/meebo, and I couldn’t see the “hecklers in the back of the room” since I wasn’t IN that particular room. But in the room I was in, everyone around me was grumbling like crazy about a) the incredibly inappropriate content of the interview (sweat stained shirts, really?), b) the constant attention grabbing questioning from Lacy, c) the highly pre-scripted answers (and questions, apparently) from/to Mark, and d) the entirely inappropriate way she managed the audience.

"Terrorism doesn't come from a deep hatred of anyone, it comes from lack of connectedness, a lack of communication, a lack of empathy."

SHUT UP. Is that it? Well, let's get Osama on Facebook so he can get in touch with his feelings and be all connected and docile.

*rolleyes*

John, in this case, I think there's rather more to be said for not BEING THERE. Of course, though, as you say, watching something on video isn't the *same* as being there. The question is: does the video show *enough* to see what was going on in this particular case? And the answer is that it does; we're really not talking about anything particularly subtle or hard-to-understand here.

In any case, for those that care to read them, the written analyses from those who *were* there merely serve to confirm that the video shows exactly what was going on. The more they write, the clearer their phenotypes become.
