[...] textPlus, a text messaging app that’s powered by GOGII, has just hit the App Store. textPlus lets any iPhone or iPod Touch send free text messages to any cell number by using in-app advertising to cover its costs. There is no limit on how many text messages you can send per month, it’s just a matter of getting WiFi, 3G or an Edge connection. GOGII was one of the first companies that was funded by iFund, the partnership between venture capital firm KPCB and Apple, which was announced at the Apple SDK roadmap event. [...]

Unbelievable@14: Welcome to the 1990s.

I'm really gutted that this won't be available to schlubs like me for a few months. Interesting ITunes-ish royalty split on the apps, though.

Funny that EA put Spore on the iPhone. Anything to keep people from forgetting about their vaporware.

Also, TC needs to tweak its "you're posting too quick" errors.

Epocrates, Inc. was one of only five companies, including Salesforce.com, AOL, EA and Sega, to be highlighted by Steve Jobs during the iPhone Software Roadmap media briefing. Epocrates has already begun working directly with Apple to create a downloadable version of its clinical products that can be downloaded directly to the iPhone or iPod Touch.

Over 500,000 healthcare professionals (including one in four U.S. physicians) use Epocrates’ software to support patient safety, such as checking for potential drug interactions and accurate dosing. Epocrates’ applications can currently be downloaded to personal digital assistants or smartphones, including, Palm, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry devices, and as reported this morning, soon the iPhone and iPod touch.

Well the developer site is still not working for me but I got a glimpse at one page which clarified the whole free/$99 and timescale thing.

The SDK is free and available today, but it looked to me like the $99 developer program membership is needed to test your apps on an actual iphone/ipod touch. That program is only available to a limited number of companies, and only in the US to start with.

Can I get one of those "enterprise wife's" that was announced at 10:06?

Mine is a low budget, SMB, trial version, ad-bundled, low bandwidht, monochrome, 5400 rpm's old models.

I saw the new Lindsey Lohan enterprise wife model with 1080i, WYSIWYG, boimetrics interphase...and I want one. I think it's called the "iLohan"

Well I think there are very sound technical reasons why flash, java or silverlight are not happening on the iphone at the moment.

What makes the iphone and ipod touch a special experience? The smooth and responsive feel of the user interface. Part of that is the excellent multitouch screen, the other part is having the graphics accelerated so that animation can be a reality, not a judderfest nightmare.

Developing Web Apps for the iphone didnt turn out to be all that fun because they couldnt get to most of the iphone functionality, the interesting stuff like multitouch. And AJAX animation in the browser is not exactly megasmooth, but neither would flash be if you could see it run on the iphone.

Now it is possible that in future something like flash or silverlight could be ported to iphone in a way that harnessed the opengl acceleration, but its no cert that will happen, and it shouldnt be expected at this stage I guess. Staying away from those technologies also enables Apple to continue with the control-freakery over what apps are allowed.

Im tempted to learn objective-, especially if a slightly larger iphone-like multitouch device comes out. However Apples developer site server seems to be overloaded right now.

As long as you are withing cell range, your location can be pinpointed accurately enough for most applications (have you used Google maps on the iPhone?). Not appropriate for wilderness adventurers, sure, but they already have their GPS devices.

I find it paradoxal that the main web 2.0 revolution of the past 5 years was to move away from desktop applications to web applications.
Now a lot of people seem to get excited about adding "desktop" apps to their iPhone. I personally wish the next generation iPhone would support Flash or AIR, so we can get cooler web apps for our iPhones :)

BTW if Michael is (quote) "sending us updates via SMS messages from his iPhone", he may be interested in checking out our website (http://www.iphoneslide.com), no application required ;)

I think the biggest question here is if iPhone apps will be written in java or Objective C. If its java, then mobile developers can port easily and write apps for both andriod and iphone. If its C, then more nightmares and late nights for developers, and most likely fewer iPhone apps. (Porting is a pain in the ass). I HOPE there is a Java VM on the iPhone.

For what it's worth I have recently blogged about the SDK from the perspective of the best practices, workflows and building blocks already supported by the iPhone/iPod touch.

Might provide some fodder for thinking about where the application landscape is headed -- subject to what Apple ultimately chooses to open up in terms of APIs and tools that support same.
