Facebook Hires Google’s Sheryl Sandberg As COO
by Duncan Riley on March 4, 2008

Facebook has announced the hiring of Sheryl Sandberg, previously Google’s Vice President of Global Online Sales & Operations, as COO. Sandberg will start at Facebook March 24.

Sandberg spent six years at Google where she built and managed Google’s online sales channels for both AdWords and AdSense. Prior to Google, Sandberg was Chief of Staff to the U.S. Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton.

Sandberg’s appointment will strength Facebook’s sales efforts at a time the company is focusing on turning a profit from its growing traffic base.

According to Facebook, Sandberg will “be responsible for helping Facebook scale its operations and expand its presence globally. Sandberg will manage sales, marketing, business development, human resources, public policy, privacy and communications and will report directly to Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg.”

It’s another great catch for Facebook from Google and continues the “Facebook Problem” for Google which we wrote about in November.

>expand its presence globally.

Indeed.. much needed (for Facebook).

The “$15B” company is going to focus on turning a profit, just kind of funny, that’s all

I hope she is able to make facebook cash flow profitable, without that an IPO will be impossible

100 million visitors a month, and still no profit. Well, this was certainly a much needed new hire then :)

TC posts are getting boring by the minute.. *zzz*

Seems like someone with lastname of Somethingberg will be the CTO? :P

Ya know, in Australia, I believe that goes by the name copyright infringement.

UNLESS

you did it as a parody. But that would be calling Sheryl Sandberg As COO a joke???

@7: I notice that your last post is about being a hero by starting someone’s car! So - perhaps people who live in very glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!!

Sigh.. admittedly, I should be banned to post further comments :-(
Anyway, try again -

People seem to be getting bored of working at Google or maybe Facebook is offering better jobs.

I thought Mark said he would never hire someone over 40?

Interesting. Let’s hope she is stern in her approach with Zuck. If she is just along for the ride the house of cards will crumble. I wish her well.

That’s a big coup for Facebook. And a clear sign that Google is now a “big company” …

Well now this is going to be interesting… hiring some new facebook staff!

Other than search, what else has google been successful at that makes money or has taken off, to be worth almost 200billion at one time. Heres what is happening. people are selling their stocks cause they need the cash to cover their butts. Google is way over-valued, so are a ton of other companies.

Facebook’s quixotic search for profits begins.

Off Topic: Blog Terminology Convention - March 4th, 2008 at 1:21 pm PST

You know, lots of people refer to their “post” on this blog in the comments section. I thought that a given article was “posted” to the weBLOG, and readers just made “comments” (or “commented”).

On a BBS, everyone is on equal footing, and makes “posts”, but on a blog, “posts” are are made by contributors only.

Call me a stickler, but it has the effect of elevating oneself without merit. Or folks that speak other languages typically.

I wonder what the strike price of her shares was…

Facebook is extremely lucky to have Cherly join the team.

She is amazingly talented. Big loss for Google.

looks like the board is brining a babysitter to watch over, Zuckerberg. He is done well to keep his job, but we all know what this means. They want to keep face and the brand while having real exec run the ship. I bet, Zuckerberg will be focusing on tech and product and she is the one calling the shots.

i know a lot of people at google are happy :)

@18, why are you suggesting CFO and not CTO? I hope that’s not an anti-Semitic remark.

It is nice that a company is trying to make a profit. From a general business standpoint. A company making money seems like a good idea.

I feel like facebook advertising is getting less and less useful by the minute.

Sheryl Sandberg=Eric Schmidt ??

100 million users per month right?

Realistic revenue should be in the region 20-30 million a month - up to 360 million a year. Although the more ambitious investors are probably banking on 5 times this much revenue.

Facebook is currently making 150 million right? Or approx 15cents per user per month.

Facebook is a phenomenal success story in terms of growth but a phenomenal failure in terms of monetization.

The new girl has her work cut out I imagine. Given that she is from an adsense background, she is going to have to expand her horizons to sqeeze money out of facebook. Should be interesting))

I think thats a smart move. google must be very excited now.
