Confirmed: Live Video On YouTube This Year

First rumored in January, YouTube is definitely doing live video, and it’s happening this year.

Sarah Meyers got the scoop (video above), transcript as follows care of NewTeeVee:

Meyers: “When are you guys gonna do live video on YouTube?”

Chen: “2008. We’ll do it this year.

“Live video is just something that we’ve always wanted to do, we’ve never had the resources to do it correctly, but now with Google, we hope to actually do it this year.”

Now for the guessing game: which live video startup will fold first once YouTube dominates the market? YouTube will be last to market, but the same momentum that has seen YouTube dominate video will now be applied to live video. Like video, content creators want to be on the service that gives them the most exposure, no matter how good the alternatives area (after all, YouTube doesn’t offer the best quality video). YouTube already has the user base; live video streamers will flock to YouTube like a moth to a flame.

    Wonder if they’ll tie the live video service with their Google Docs Presentations. Sounds like a webinar platform without all the complexity or big costs.

    Getting a Live Video service up is not an easy task look at what happened when yahoo tried doing it. Said that, I agree if they do get it right, it can be a huge challenge for other upcoming start ups in this field

    In addition to gLive Video, I believe there is high probability of some sort of deal, link-up or service between YouTube and Seesmic in the not too distant future.

    Dumber than dumber than dumb.

    No deals and nobody is getting acquired.

    Nobody has any defensible technology or large enough audience to claim.

    Youtube will enter and dominate period.

    Youtube will certainly not do anything as stupid as live. yahoo and copy all these other services, yet fail to scale.

    The custom IRC tech and communities can be rebuilt.

    Great! I am using qik as alfa-tester for cellular live streaming and i really hope that it will be possible forwarding streaming via qik to youtube as well.

    @Ramon, I nixed the Snap and put in the 17 so now it’s Pop17. Seventeen is the most popular number in the world according to Digg.

    I have been on all the platforms and am one of the first life casters to o mobile. At one point I was even 24/7.

    It’s hard to say which start-up will fail first. At the end of the day I think it really comes down to who has the least amount of funding. $$$$ talks!

    “life casting” implies I can broadcast my life anytime, anywhere. The only device I have on me all the time is my phone. So its mandatory that the success of YouTube “live” be by 3G mobile phone video uploading. Android anyone?

    Blog tv was doing it for a while too before yahoo. Live is not a new thing and youtube has already placed video response with a live application on it to send video right from your web cam instantly and now here comes the full live stream. As big as youtube is i feel that they will take over the live game.

    In my estimation, the only one that stands a chance of being purchased is Ustream. They are the only ones that have proven to be able to scale (Yahoo Live couldn’t even do it..)

    @Mark Sanders, I think Ustream is the most likely bet too. I also asked him if Google will buy any of these live video platforms and he said he does not know what Google is going to do.

    i think i will try that if i can do it off my own site with html. thats pretty cool , exept it will open them up to alot of the complaints we see on the news about stickam (you know predators). exept in larger numbers.

    I wonder if they will get this out or if it will be another Google vaporware product. At least this time the story broke through good journalism at TechCrunch, but that does not necessarily mean that Google will actually get it done.

    I presume that we will have a press release soon, lots of talk and then a long wait for anything to actually happen. Just enough time to kill off any competition and innovation without anyone actually getting a product out.

    I realize that Google is losing its top talent to Facebook, but jeez….how hard is it for them to actually get things done. It would be neat if Google launched some more products in “working mode” as opposed to through press releases and leaks. Maybe they could buy one of the existing live companies to encourage more innovation and then they could also have a working product.

    I hate when places like youtube/Google start sticking there noses into small specailize niche industries. They wreck the creative aspect of the development of products. To much GOOGLE in the world

    Everyone is so hot on “live interactive video” services, yet totally ignore those that have been doing it since 1999, when the Funday Pawpet Show first went “on the air” with audience participation and feedback via Internet Relay Chat (IRC). And they’re still doing it, just about every Sunday.

    It’s probably natural that the live video market will consolidate. At the end of the day, people want an audience, and thus it doesn’t make sense to have 50-100 different live broadcasting players.

    On the other hand, recall that Google launched Google Video to kill YouTube, and despite all the massive resources that Google can bring to bear, it failed to do so, and had to buy YouTube for $1.6 billion.

    My personal prediction is that the other major technology and media companies understand that it will be dangerous to allow Google to dominate live video, especially since the space is still up for grabs. Look for a wave of acquisitions if/when Google actually launches YouTube Live.
