Web-based word processors keep closing the gap with Microsoft Office. Since its launch, Zoho now has 650,000 users, a 30 percent increase from just last November, the company tells us. It is doing 2 million user sessions per month. And its users have created more than one million documents on Zoho Writer (1.6 million, if you include its online presentation and spreadsheet products, Zoho Show and Zoho Sheets).
Today, Zoho released an update to Zoho Writer that includes:
Docx Suppor—the ability to export documents in the new docx Word file format (this is in addition to existing support for doc, txt, html, pdf, odf, sxw, rtf files).
Thesaurus—a thesaurus in ten languages (English, Czech, German, Greek, French, Irish, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Slovak).
Groups—Now you can save emails forgroups instead of re-entering each one every time you want to share a document.
Enhanced support for Endnotes/Footnotes, Headers/Footers—Formatting is now maintained when a document is exported, as are manual page breaks.
Zoho still has along way to go to catch up to Microsoft Word, and it trails Google Docs in usage, but it is making steady progress.

Zoho may be acquired.

Yes it might get acquired… but its founder will never sell it for less than a billion bucks !
I Love Zoho!
I just think their applications are getting better and better… in the right direction!
Erick,
You are right that these hosted apps have a long way to go before they can put up a good fight against the Goliath.
A recent survey by the NPD Group found that fewer than 1 percent of desktop PC users had replaced a desktop application — such as Microsoft Office — with a streamlined online alternative like Google Docs, even though the latter is free.
But, I believe that hosted apps is still the way to go …
I’m a big Zoho fan. I use Projects to organize all my tasks — plus, its always fun to route for the underdog
Cheers,
Tara

fpos for sure… word is the “coke” of colas… zoho is virgin cola at best, and branson wasted a billion trying that, remember that one… this will never fly and they are pouring money in a pit. its about more than just a browser and some startup from silllycone valley.
1 mill? thats nothing rofl
Hold on, isn’t that nothing – an average of 1.3 documents per user? And an average of less than 0.5 documents created per session?
I create about 5 word docs a day, perhaps.
I think this reporting is not looking at a serious issue. Business is not about registrations.
Group Sharing is big, with implications that go way beyond just Writer.
@james
650K users for all Zoho Apps and not just for Zoho Writer.
What are the other smileys… :-p
Google needn’t worry, but SalesForce should. Zoho CRM is almost as good at about 10% of the cost.
.docx export is nice, but I really need .docx import!
plug for Zoho CRM. die salesforce
.docx import is coming – give us a few weeks!
