tiny-iphone.pngMobile startup Tiny Pictures secured a $7.2 million series B financing from Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Mohr Davidow Ventures, which led the A round, also participated. Previously, the company raised a total of $4 million, including seed investments from Reid Hoffman and Joi Ito.

Tiny Pictures operates the mobile photo-sharing service Radar, which lets members comment on each others camera-phone snapshots. Radar serves up 15 million mobile photos a month worldwide. Last November, the company introduced advertising in the form of public photo streams that movie studios and other companies try to get people to pay attention to. Blacked Eyed Peas singer will.i.am recently joined the company’s advisory board.

This kind of a community is a step towards mobile social networking. Playfon recently bought out a mobile photo and video sharing site http://blog.quintura.com/2008/.....5-million/

Just one clarification radar doesn’t provide a mobile application as in a app that sits on the handset. Photos/Videos can be uploaded by sending a MMS.

Typo, Blacked Eyes Peas should be Black Eye Peas.

Let’s see… a name that can be pronounced… vowels where there should be vowels… I approve, it’s money well spent!!

It seems that we are witnessing another startup that will contribute to loss of profitability due to increasing competition in the IT industry. There is more and more talking on this topic and some websites, including businesshackers.com say that it might lead to 30-40% drop in ROE/ROA.

AD, that’s not correct. Radar offers a whole range of mobile apps in addition to their wap and web sites.

How will this startup make money? Brand advertising? Does anyone above 18 want to view ads on their phones?

The ads need to be contextual based upon the pictures present - much like AdSense but more on the level of image recognition. I don’t know how this could go, the better option would be to allow users to tag the separate pictures and then with tagging comes the ability of users to to gain advertisements targeted at the different psychographics of the users

So, mobile contextual advertising based upon a community picture sharing service? Great idea — it just needs to be built upon.
