Blist Secures $6.5M for Cloud Database Software

Blist, a browser-based database management application, has raised $6.5M in Series A from Frazier Technology Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures.

The company launched in private beta at DEMO this year, although we first covered them this past November.

In addition to this funding announcement, Blist is also rolling out data importing, sharing, and charting features. The new charting capabilities can be seen in the picture to the right.

Superb Adobe Flex UI. Snappy. Cool looking. Definitely more fun than, say, Zoho Creator. Just waiting for more features. Right now it’s very limited.

Looks cool (like dabbleDB?)

What technology is used? Flex for the UI? What about the backend?

It’s nice to see a big A round for a Seattle startup - giving Blist a good sized war-chest to attack the online database market. DabbleDB is probably the established player in the market. I’m interested to see how users feel about the Flash/Flex UI. Flash is pretty ubiquitous - but some users may feel they want a totally browser-based experience (w/o Flash).

Databases who’s only UI is in Flash are not crawlable by search engines. Is that an issue anyone cares about? I can think of some applications where that would be a show-stopper.

I can’t see a lot of people using this at all. It’s great for geeks - which is a sweet market niche - but the majority of social network users won’t get this.

Still, the implementation looks great, sweet UI.

I can’t speak for dabble or blist, but I can say that this issue is the foremost issue that NextDB.net solves. NextDB has an excellent programming paradigm, all based on AJAX-style callbacks, it solves the cross domain issues, and security is a first-order concern in the design of NextQuery. Take a look, and sign up for our alpha 2 release.

Hmm…many of the blist features do not seem to work on Firefox…calendar view drag and drop, csv import, form view…guess it has a long way to go to iron out the basics….

Sure, I’ll turn over all my confidential info and that of my clients. I have no use for outsourcing data to non-SOX environments.

At the very least I will be handing over the formula & blueprint of my business to them, their friends and the NSA.

So far I observe the term ‘cloud computing’ to be abused by the liars in marketing to describe the database services ASPs used to broker, so this is just another ASP.

The only cloud is the flies.

This new database software looks very good, interface something like iPhone.
