Amid the turmoil of staff layoffs, takeover offers and merger discussions, Yahoo has relaunched Yahoo Video.
The biggest change to the service is the addition of a 16:9 viewer, along with support for files up to 150mb, embedable playlists and improved user profiles. The content focus has changed from simply offering content uploaded by users, to including video material from other Yahoo properties, including music, movies, TV, news and sports.
Yahoo Video has struggled to make an impression against Google’s domination of the market and according to comScore is about to be surpassed in traffic by Dailymotion. The service was not helped by Yahoo’s decision to offer its live video streaming service under the Yahoo Live banner instead off Yahoo Video, when there are rumors that Google may offer live streaming from YouTube later this year. Yahoo acquired video advertising service Malvern Networks for $150 million January 31.

Better late……..than never.
Hi Duncan
No report yet on Quadrant One ?
Is it the effect of that PR article by RWW ?

must be pretty tough to go about business when the company may come under a hostile take over bid

shoulda been done a long time ago.
After uploading over 50 videos to their old service, anything is better then what they use to have… I just hope MSN Video follows their lead as their service is the absolute bottom of the barrel. It seems like this “attempted merger” is actually a good kick in Yahoo’s butt, they are actually coming out with quite a few “new things” which I can’t see all of it being co-incidental.

Yahoo’s relaunched site GUI is superior, in a few ways, to its competitors. Cleaner design, more intuitive nav, bigger screens. But I wonder if the vid-watching public has become so accustomed to YouTube — which, honestly, is feeling more and more cluttered these days — that it’s becoming more difficult to acclimate one’s self to any new site. I spend so much time on YouTube that, while I can appreciate Yahoo’s design, I still feel as awkward using it as when I’m, say, trying to navigate a friend’s unfamiliar TV cable channel guide.
MALVERN networks?
What does this mean for the rumored launch of Flickr video (which I want yesterday)?
If you are interested with quality content from the major networks, check out http://www.tv3o.com. You can create your own channel and get alerts when a new episode is available to watch for free online.
So the user experience was enhanced. Big Deal! We’re talking Yahoo! here, not some kazakhstan video startup.

I fear that they may have a little more work ahead of them… Note some of the more risque entries in the “Entertainment and TV” category:

Perhaps they should separate them into separate categories?

Nice interface. I love it. Like someone else said, I think the Microsoft’s takeover attempt scared the crap out of them.
Oh and the quality here is much better than Youtube’s.
“a 16:9 viewer, along with support for files up to 150mb”
Would be interesting except just about every other video site already offers this or better. It’s kinda sad that there are so many sites with vastly superior video offerings (imeem, vimeo, stage6) and yet youtube still gets the lions share with 320×240 blurryvision.
If you’re going to be better than youtube you really need to be a lot better.

What the hell is a Malvern? Try Maven Networks.
