#6 + #23. Agreed 100%

Anatoly, #47, #56: LOL!

#72: LOL! I think you need to be a littlemore socialist/democratic in your way of thinking to make something like "a new internet", coz you're obviously not making it for yourself or for money (else it wouldn't be "a new internet", but "another propriatery massively networked distirbuted technology")

#21: Photosynth is really Steve Seitz (and company) project. I don't know the exact role that Microsoft played, other than that of a bank, but Steve is the one who's done most of the research behind the tech of Photosynth. And the SeaDragon guys, which were again, non-MS, and bought by MS (bank again - see #45 by Luther). Although I'm sure the MS guys named here http://labs.live.com/photosynth/ helped with the product and intergration of MS tech.

#82. Is it really? I thought it was merely a marketing slogan, because I certainly don't see the empowerment through their digital slavery (read: platform-lock).

#83. Keep on smoking...

#85. I'd partially agree.

I'm hoping that Microsoft's big announcement is in-fact, the Google Earth telescope clone. A Microsoft Telescope application would seriously bring me to tears with the fact it would probably be Microsoft's first interesting and useful software application since the release of Windows 95.

It would surely wake Google up off it's high horse too. It would make for an amusing battle nonetheless.

Photosynth seems like a giant pipe dream. I've read a few articles talking about the algorithms taking days to analyze and compile the photosynth data. It simply sounds like that code can only be optimized so much.

I'm personally have not been that impressed with Photosynth. The idea and implementation is impressive, but I don't think it's ever going to be optimized for any common usage. Surely MS can do better than that.

I know MS's vision is to empower people through software, but "will change the world my sons live in?" Really, will this new app relieve poverty in the third world, or stop wars?

It seems these people are working in this team:
"The group envisions consumer information and entertainment experiences not available today and builds or combines technologies from other Microsoft Research groups and crafts intuitive user interfaces and compelling scenarios to deliver that experience. Rather than focus on old media or new media, the group attempts to develop working prototypes of the Next forms of media possible from new convergent technologies, hence the name.

Next Media's research focus spans the linear and interactive media spectrum from television, broadband, and gaming to combinations of traditional media forms or emerging media forms too new to have a name. "

I'd say it'll be some device, rather than just software.
