Bring on ACID3 and Firefox 3!

Let the gecko vs. webkit war rage on.
Presto might be able to do some interesting things too....

Maybe one of these days Trident will stop being completely laughable.. but i doubt it.

Excellent! Some quick and dirty tests confirm WebKit is about twice as fast as most other browsers loading a large JavaScript application.

You're not kidding...this thing is Speedy Gonzales!

However, I still rely too much on many of the FF plugins to make the switch permanently. Actually only the Web Developer plugin and Firebug. So if those show up in Safari, I would switch in a heartbeat.

I'm experimenting with an Ajax app at the moment, and was mainly using Firefox initially (especially because debugging with Firebug is a fantastic experience but also because it's my main browser for other things), but I recently started using Safari for testing for two reasons: It's far faster than both FF2 and FF3 beta 2, and it has more complete Canvas support (shadows in partiular, though I believe that's in FF3, however the FF3 betas are even slower than FF2 for me for the stuff I'm testing)

I still use Firefox for most of my browsing because I prefer the overall feel of it better, but it's dog slow for javascript heavy apps (Google Maps is a nightmare) and leaks memory like a sieve (or it's fragmentation or whatever - makes no difference to me when it eats a GB in a couple of hours of heavy browsing or development).

And my experiene with Webkit is from the current production releases of Safari. If the new Webkit is far faster, I might just bite the bullet and make Safari my main browser.

I would agree with the superior speed, but as a new Mac convert I have to note the increase in resource use by the new Safari.

While running it I heard my fan ramp up for the first time since buying my MacBook.... Why would a seemingly native app be such a resource hog?

When you are comparing Firefox to Safari, you are comparing apple and oranges.

Safari is a completely closed thing: People have to use an Input Manager hack to add any functionality to the application.

Firefox on the other hand was designed from the get go to be extensible. It was also designed from the get go to use its own dog food and have a UI buillt completely in HTML, CSS and Javascript. That was a crazy bet 7 years ago but given how fast CPUs are getting and the evolution of the JS VM with tamarin and others, I think that the bet day took is going to clearly pay off.

Performance is only going to matter so much in the decision people make when selecting a browser. The overall experience and innovation will matter more I think and by being more open and extensible, I think that Firefox is set to win on the innovation front.

Note: The problem is not webkit, the problem is Apple and Safari. They could very well have taken webkit and built a more open and extensible browser on top of it.
