For all this talk about "open search" I am surprised that nowhere in the article or in the comments has anyone raised the issue of SEO.

Companies spend billions of dollars on Search Engine Optimization trying to improve their search rankings. SEO ultimately amounts to trying to understand how search algorithm works so you can exploit it to your website's advantage.

If the algo were public, wouldn't that just make it easier for site managers to game the system?

I don't understand how "open search" wouldn't result in handing over search result ranking to whatever companies can afford the best SEO consultants.

That is brilliant. I love your way of thinking...maybe they will go for the long shot. Open source does seem to be the wave of the future doesn't it. How about a Yahoo/Facebook partnership.

Erick,

I am surprised that you hadn't mentioned Alexa's platform which was launched 2 yrs ago. Only 1 other commentator picked this up.

You should read the techmeme citations when Alexa launched starting with Battelle, gigaom and TC itself. Jeff Clavier's post (repeat after me, the index is a commodity) is also a good read.

All of these posts (include mike arrington) made EXACTLY the same arguments that you did and yet Alexa has not moved the needle.

Why?

Not sure, I don't know the answer and am quite baffled since we are making a small bet on Alexa and think Open Search indexes have merit.

But the question and probably a worthy post in itself is to understand why Alexa's initiative didn't take off.

I echo the comments above: Great post Erick! This is by far the most thought provoking analysis of all the recent merger talk. Much better than the billion of repeat articles that we have seen over and over.

This post will be included in the article on some writer on the CNN business pages on Monday. They seem to get all of their news from Techcrunch just a few days late.

Combining Yahoo’s and Microsoft’s existing search efforts won’t do much to reverse that trend. After all, two dogs don’t make a right. But there is a long shot Yahoo can try that could just turn things around.

Sometimes with all the rumor speculations and other infonoise we dont have time to sit down and actually analyze... you did! that's cool :)
the idea itself is so great that it makes me think - maybe you already know something that we dont know :) because if I were yahoo I would certainly do as you suggest, after joining MS to get my ass covered... that would indeed be a good option for both companies - MS needs to change its negative image and now's the time - both apple and google are getiing so me negative feedback for being so closed whilу talking of opennes...

Microsoft has been relying on Yahoo! for benchmarking tests on SQL Server. I can't help but think that MS is trying to buy out Yahoo! to use as a platform to showcase and move .NET 3.5 and SQL Server 2008 forward.
