We acknowledge that storing passwords locally is always more secure than keeping them on a server, but we leave this choice of security vs. convenience in the hands of our users for each of their passwords. the above quotation is a statement from a complete asshat. Ever heard of Carnegie Mellon? Or any number of other great edu institutions?

Go look at the FIPS 140 certifications list. Not all companies are from your two suggested areas of the country.

It’s entirely possible to store your passwords on your local machines instead of syncing them with Vidoop. Just a matter of checking a box or not.

I’m not an expert but I think they’re storing passwords in their database. I would rather they store a value that uses a key stored locally on my computer to prevent some disgruntled myvidoop DBA from viewing my user names and passwords. Perhaps someone can explain why this should not be a concern.

Other than that, I love it! It’s great for keeping track of all the beta sites I sign up for.

Not being from either Silicon Valley or Cambridge, these guys can’t possibly know anything about developing secure software. Everyone knows that this year’s wave in security development defeats keystroke logging, brute force, phishing, pharming, man in the middle, social engineering, reverse social engineering, security questions, CAPTCHA, banner ads, password resets, user-generated content, pantone color matching, alchemy, and attack by boiling oil.

The next thing you know, they’ll be publishing some self-serving quasi-academic research (endorsed by one of the presidential front-runners) that disses their competitors’ whored out commercial authentication schemes.

1) too cumbersome – people are lazy, i don’t want to have to type in a password each time i go to a site (especially one i have to “figure out”) – it slows me down! that’s the appeal of ‘remember me’ or password managers.

2) what’s the bandwidth implication of sending all those images over the wire each time someone tries to log in? certainly a slower experience for the end user, no matter who pays for the pipe.

3) they plan on monetizing logins by putting ads in some of the pictures. that seems like it could get annoying real fast.

but still, neat idea. if they can actually pull this off and make money from it, that’d be impressive.
