Obama Sets Record With January Donations; Online Donations 88% Of Total
by Michael Arrington on February 4, 2008

Last Thursday the Barack Obama (who we have endorsed as the Democratic candidate for president) campaign announced a record-setting month in terms of donations – $32 million in January alone. That’s the most ever raised by a candidate who’s still in a Primary race. And, his campaign told me today, $28 million of that was raised online.

That means Obama raised more money in January online than Howard Dean raised in his entire 2003/2004 campaign (he raised a total of $27 million). Barack’s $28 million in online contributions came from more than 250,000 contributors. 90% were under $100. 40% were $25 or less, and 10,000 people gave $5 or $10 to the campaign.

Clinton has not released her January fundraising total. One rumor says it was in the $20 million range.

With just one day to go until Super Tuesday, Barack trails Clinton by 1% in the California polls, a key state for both parties. McCain, our Republican endorsement, is leading California polls with a healthy margin. Tuesday may be their day.

Obama’s campaign also tells us that 250,000 profiles have been created at BarackObama.com, which we covered last year.

A roundup of our coverage of the Primaries is here.

  • First…..

    Go Obama!!!

  • You might want to update your numbers, pretty sure McCain is now like 8 points behind Romney in California…that little bitchfest he did at the debate where he was caught trying to prove a lie for 30 minutes pretty much killed him. Or maybe its because Republicans are starting to realize that he might be the nominee unless they stop him, and they are getting in gear telling everyone what a liberal McCain is

  • this guy is using fresh ideas and appealing to your generation who can relate

  • I’m getting pretty excited to watch Super Tuesday Returns all day on tuesday. Oh wait. No, I’m not. I’m pretty excited to work all day on tuesday and look at the returns for 5 minutes.

Isn’t this primary season so wild and exciting?

  • Time to update the post=) Latest Zogby poll shows Obama up four points.

    http://www.bost...e_electability/

“A Zogby/Reuters poll had Obama up by four percentage points – the first time he has led in any survey.”

  • Look at the star power who volunteered their time on their own:

  • Getting pretty sick of the US Election. Can’t the rest of the world get a break from it? I vote for more tech news and less political agenda. It’s obnoxious.

  • This makes me want to drop everything and run for president myself… this is more money then the vast majorities of entrepreneurs will see in their entire lifetimes! Jon for president? Sure… why the heck not! ;-)

  • Yepp, it’s time to update post. Actually i am tired of these elections.

  • He’s raised plenty of money, but he needs more support – if you’re a fan, go to obamaanywhere.com. I’ve developed a technology to help spread Barack’s message and get out the vote by allowing the posting of comments, photos, and videos all over the web. Help out the cause by signing up!

  • His supporters may be more willing to stick their hands in their pockets, but alot still feel Clinton will become the Democratic candidate for President. That seems to be how most British political commentators see it over here. Hope they’re wrong, though.

  • … anybody but Hellary!
I knew I would have to deal with this sooner or later, Hellary!
I thought that she had forgotten about us, but the $44 billion deal was too much for her to ignore. She called yesterday and said, “Congratulations on this whopper of a deal Mr. Ballmer, however the people have some concerns! Microsoft, Yahoo, Yahoo, Microsoft, the people of our great country are in just a great sense of concern about this deal. The people need reassurances in these times of murkiness and doubt, the peoples minds are …”
I was getting annoyed so I interupted and said, “let’s just cut to the quick Ms Clinton, you want campaign contributions or you will set up congressional inquiries and hold up our progress!”
I could hear the excitement in her voice as she replied:
“The people do appreciate it when large corporations support the leaders that they support, in such cases the people have a tendency to be lenient in regulating such companies.”
I sighed, then feigned enthusiasm and said, “The people will get what the people deserve, will ten do?”
She slowly said, “ten wiil be fine, you are a most generous man!”
I gushed, “Anything for the people.”
I could tell that she wanted to say more but I just hung up the phone on her (I love doing that).

I called in the secretary and instructed her, “Cut the Clinton Campaign a check for Ten Dollars!”

It will be a few weeks before she calls back about the “misunderstanding”, but at least I have a few weeks free of this blood sucker!

  • It looks like he’s gonna have a BIG night tomorrow!!!

We can NOT have Clinton in the White House again with her bobblehead politics… just look at her clap away and bounce around like a robotic doll (weird?)

  • If Obama wins I’ll vote for Mccain. I cannot vote for someone as liberal as Obama or as inexperienced. I do think he will be president someday and he may even get my vote but it won’t be this year.

  • Ron Paul is getting stronger. Surpassed his $5 million goal by Feb. 5th.
He also has come come in second in 3 states now. The media does it’s best to sweep this under the rug.

  • “Last Thursday the Barack Obama (who we have endorsed as the Democratic candidate for president)…”

Hey, I thought the endorsement was for “Tech” President (wink, wink).

  • Ron Paul is a serious dude and you’re right. The media seems to want to avoid talking about him. He’s as substantive as anyone else and much more experienced that Obama.

  • Jenkins, was Bush experienced? Ha ha good one. In the case he was, the last 8 years were a good example for giving somebody more inexperienced a chance.

And voting for a rebulblican doesn’t bring out the mess this country is in right now and if you gonna ask “what mess?” I feel sorry for you.

  • Pretty impressive! I guess politicians from other countries can take a lesson from such online branding initiatives. Especially in countries like India where the youth is connected online this could work in a big way!

  • Obama has erased Hillary’s huge lead in the national polls. This thing may not even be decided after tomorrow.

  • Prediction: McCain gets the Republican nomination, further dividing the GOP. A crazy social conservative runs as an independent, fracturing the vote. The Dems walk the election.

  • @10 There is no way I am going to install something like this, unless I know who you are and what you do. For all we know this is just a spyware and you are using the enthusiasm of supporters to install your crap.

  • Great story — now can someone please look at the policies of the politician instead of the story about the man?

  • We say the same thing about George Bush 8 years ago. You can all see the outcome of voting for likeability instead of policy. Besides, How many of you here truly know what Obama stands for? you just believe all he told you line and sinker. Did you check the fact?

What is change? Positive or negative? check all the story about what he said and what the real truth is?

Here are Obama’s policies. The Obama camp created an entire category on the site just on the issues:

    I particularly like these:

The idea is that you get inspired, you go to the website, and then you understand what he stands for.

P.S. Props to the Obama camp for making it easier to embed videos straight from their site.

  • Cool, I also want to raise so much money.

  • Actually i am tired of these elections.

  • I think amount of donations will grow constantly because dollar constantly loose its cost. Look at the begining of the former century. One dollar was very costly.

  • he using good ideas and appealing to your generation who can relate
