One company I worked with on cost reduction was spending over $40,000 per year printing emails!

Yes, I supported a cost reduction project to change the corporate culture and save them over $40,000 per year.

I agree, and I felt the exact same way when people at my company added the “Please consider the environment before printing this email.” footers on their email signatures.

Our company is comprised of very tech savvy people, and the majority of our communication is done through email.

The only time I ever print an email is if there is a dispute over what was said, but even then, you don’t always have to print it, for God’s sake. You can just pull it from the archive and send it to the person who questions what was said.

I may print 2 emails a year…there just really isn’t any reason to print emails. But yeah, seeing those little “be green” reminders all the time did make me roll my eyes and think to myself “Yeah, I have to hold myself back from printing EVERY SINGLE EMAIL from these people!”

Those people ended up removing that stuff from their sig…I guess they realized that no one prints emails here, so it wasn’t necessary. Or people said it was annoying.

That artical is dumb. I agree that people do print things that they don’t have to but to say that 97mil emails being send around causes more paper to be wasted. Im sure thats why the Postal Service is hurting so bad. Everytime you use the PO you use (3) 8.5 by 11 sheets plus a bunch of gas and other resources.

I mostly agree with what you say, however, and unfortunately, there are many, many people who DO print their e-mails for no apparent reason. I can’t tell you how many times during the course of the day I find sitting piled up on the common office printer, pages and pages of long e-mail threads (printed single-sided no less); made longer by extra spacing and all the name, time stamps, and lengthy email signature “prose.” Sometimes I ask the person why they printed all of that stuff and they don’t seem to have a good answer. They agree that perhaps they didn’t really need to print it, and if they, did, they could have taken a few seconds to delete the unecessary stuff and also print double0sided. Or, they say they don’t have time to “digest” the subject of the email at the moment and so print it out to remind them to read it later. Hey, how about creating an alarm that reminds you to go back and read it onscreen later?
So, my point is that there are still many people who print emails and I think reminding them every so often not to print everything that comes their way is a good thing. Thanks for listening.

Ironically the people who append these message to the end of their emails (especially if it is an image and not text as the one shown above appears to be) may be adding to environmental problems since they are increasing the size of the email itself which will take up unnecessary extra space on a server prompting another server to be added more rapidly and using up more electricity.

“No One Prints Emails Anyway”

I know someone of “the older generation” who prints “important emails” on a daily basis. The paper gets filed, and when the files get too big the copies get ditched, usually in the trash and not the recycling.

Although it may be a personal choice, some people are just woefully oblivious of the choices, so props to those who try and make a small bit of difference. If you can tell someone to their face that they’re wasting their time, their money and resources in printing emails because they’re “stuck in their ways” or “prefer everything to be on paper” anyway, then a daily reminder might eventually sink in. If they’ve learned a wasteful habitm then they can unlearn it too.
