Google Mafia Update: AdSense’s Gokul Rajaram Joins Tumri Board
by Nick Gonzalez on January 28, 2008

headshot_gokul.pngEver since Google options finished vesting, people have been wondering what will become of the Xooglers after they take their money and jump into something new. Google’s former Product Management Director for AdSense, Gokul Rajaram has decided to take a position on the board of Tumri, a display advertising startup that delivers dynamically targeted ads.

Rajaram served at Google from January 2003 to November 2007 and played a major role in developing AdSense in early 2003 and on. According to his bio:

He also helped drive a number of Google’s acquisitions, including DoubleClick, AdScape, and dMarc. Earlier in his career, Rajaram worked as a technical architect at Juno Online, where he developed the back-end advertising system that drove much of Juno’s revenues and helped it go public in 1999. Rajaram has an M.B.A. from MIT Sloan, a M.S. in Computer Science from UT Austin, and a BTech in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur where he received the President’s Gold Medal for being Class Valedictorian.

No doubt Tumri is excited to have him on board. Their current products include Adpod and Publisher, which let website owners pair relevant offers with their content. Rajaram’s experience at Google couldn’t be more relevant.

Figures! What’s the point of staying once your options are finished vesting?

As for those guys at Tumri… lucky lucky lucky

His work at Tumri will tell whether the adsens was just fluke or he has some substance.
But look at his credentials.
IIT, MIT ,then Director of one of the most successful product at Google. Still 33 only. Good luck Gokul.

Wow! what a great Profile, and 33 ! Hats off and good luck to raj.

Cheers, Nag

Come on guys. There is no Google Mafia. Googlers haven’t done anything since Google.

You have to earn the name Mafia. Like the PayPal Mafia did.

I heard his brother is smart too.

This is actually good news to us all. I read from somewhere that Silicon Valley started from one great idea into another, mainly, people leaving to start something else. I hope we’ll all benefit and see something interesting coming out from Gokul! Good luck!

you make him sound like a demi-god. Google adsense isnt all that ground breaking.

and No I wasnt being kept awake at night wondering what ex-googlers were up to.

People with great ideas are bound to succeed. Innovations and perseverance are two important keys. I wish i’m with Google :)

Umm…that’s because he is a demi-god. Valedictorian at IIT is an incredible achievement, and then to back up academic honors with real-world success is impressive. This guy is a stud and Tumri should be peeing in their pants with excitement.

Breathtaking academic background. Bright future ahead!

I’ve met Gokul before at conferences and you would have never guessed he was such an accomplished fellow. Down-to-earth, humble, and gracious -which can’t be said about everyone in the valley - especially ones that have accomplished far less.

Good luck and stay classy!

The pasture always look greener at the other end so better to be careful before making any call.

It’s too late — Tumri has been struggling for too long. Gokul can help on the margins. AdSense was easy for Google because they already had hundreds of thousands of advertisers with unspent budget. All they had to do was build the ad server & yield algorithms and a new business was born. Tumri doesnt have any real advertisers or unspent budget, which means they have a slog ahead. Gokul doesn’t do slogs.

Tumri should plan adsense like program, I think Rajaram will take such program to its pinnacle.

All they had to do was build the ad server & yield algorithms and a new business was born.

it’s a pretty smart play - all he has to do is come up with some new innovative stuff, get his old buddies at google a little scared about it, and get Google to buy tumri so he gets to cash out a second time. well played.

“Whatever venture he pursues, he has the blessings of top Google brass Eric Schmidt and Sergey Brin. Product management vice president Susan Wojcicki honored him with a large plaque signed by a few hundred Googlers at his farewell party at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., few weeks ago.”

Yes, he can repeat the miracle with Tumri.

The new equation is infinity + infinity = infinity .

Good luck Raj

THERE IS NO GOOGLE MAFIA.

He actually left to start a new project, which in fact will turn aound and sell back to whom……? cant tell but im sure you all may figure that out ;) in time….
