They have already taken care of that issue so that doesnt happen. Right now only 1 out of 5 ads will play because there are too much members for the amount of ads they can play each day. Now they have temporarily closed the sign up page so we can catch up with advertisers and get a 100% conversion ratio.

Which is more annoying: A page that has enough ads splattered on it to make a reader get tired of looking at the page or a five second audio ad that lots of people won't even hear because not everyone surfs the net with their speakers turned on? (The page owners will still get paid even if the ad isn't heard, so that's a plus for them)
Remember, it is only one ad, five seconds long...

I was open to the idea when I started reading about PPP, I like extra revenue streams, but this seems like a non-starter. I tend to browse with my audio off because I am not expecting to hear anything... so this seems entirely pointless, if I did hear something, I would doubtless turn the audio down seeing as this seems the perfect way to filter out the ads...
Charles states $3.50 per month as reasonably achievable earnings, who in their right minds will damage their reputation that much on a site which gets enough traffic to even earn the $3.50?
I am strictly small-time, but even I make $75 a month for a total of thirteen static (visual) adverts across various websites from a couple of different sources. If I could get more pages approved for adverts, I have the potential for about $160 pm for a total of about 30 ads - all of these provided by an automated service, I don't have to go out and find them or negotiate terms.

My concerns and questions are.

Is the success of the PPP program > that to many people have applied to the PPP not to big?
Have they not accepted to many applications to the PPP program?
What about the 100% conversion rate and get paid for 100% of your website that was guaranteed for the people that joined the PPP program?
If there are more people applying and joining the program there will be virtually no money left to divide. and small website owners will only earn a few cents per month.
Is it not better to wait with new applications to the PPP program?

There are a lot of PPP affiliates that put a lot of time and effort in promoting PPP I expect that they will be hugely disappointed if the only see about 1% conversionrate when the program is running at full throttle.

what you guys think of this?

They did not miss their launch date. The launch date was just when the bidding for the ad placement spots would take place. The ads will start to roll out for the next 30-60 days. This was stated ahead of time, I don't understand why people are complaining about it.

They are not monetizing our sites. Giving them lots of PVs tho, foolish me, so they can attempt to sign up advertisers. Meanwhile our visitors hear blissful silence, nothing, because they don't have the ads that were promised.

They totally missed their launch date and now they're just full of a bunch of excuses and continuing to put everybody off over and over. Not only is this a bad idea, but it's also starting to look like one big scam, too.

If there's anyone who should be upset by audio on a website, it's me. I am blind and use a screen reader to access the internet. When audio plays, I usually can't hear my screen reader unless it is very quiet audio. So, what do I think about it? It's AWSOME! 5 seconds is a really short time, I can wait that long to access the page, and it's a great way to find out about new things. I don't watch much tv for obvious reasons, and usually the music on the radio these days is so bad I look forward to the comercials. I spend quite a bit of time on the internet, and a 5 second audio ad that informs me of new services, new products, etc is a great thing. I am just glad it is limited to 5 seconds, some of those sites on traffic exchanges just refuse to shut the hell up. >:)
For those people who want to run it down by playing it on traffic exchanges, it wouldn't work because people are still hearing the ad. What difference does it make if the hit to your site comes from a traffic exchange where you have to wait 20 seconds to go to the next page or from google? Actually, the traffic exchange may be better, with it you are going to keep the visitor for 20 seconds at minimum. As for auto exchanges, once they are discovered, they could be placed on a do not play list or even better, a free play list. That way it may still be possible for people to hear the ads, in the people who are trying to disrupt the program will inadvertently be helping the advertiser.

Hello,

The only thing I intend to say is Pay-Per-Play is going to be a grand success. I dont think a 5 second Ad will annoy visitors.

Just watch PPP, it's going to create records.

Thanks

First, I don't believe that message came from Charles. Second, when did someone pass a law saying that advertising had to be "enjoyable" and that in order to be profitable it must be enjoyed by all?

I firmly believe that we will see much more in the way of audio ads on the net in the future.

I suggest we all game the system by making fake blogs and using traffic exchanges and autosurfs with that ad installed. We'll make hundreds of dollars while PayPerPlay will lose all credibility whatsoever.

I too wrote a post about why it sucks: http://blogbadly.com/make-money-blogging/net-audio-ads-sucks-the-ad-program-for-when-youve-just-stopped-caring/

I just thought of a pretty good "Plan B" if Pay Per Play fails. Instead of webmasters putting the ads on their website and them getting paid, how about people sign up for Pay Per Play, but instead they download some software that will automatically play the audio ad for them every 3 minutes or so when they surf the web. This means that members are willingly hearing the ads, but not because they are on websites that have it, but because they have some software installed maybe in their browser that will play the ads for them to hear. This will definetly take care of the annoyance problem most of you are arguing about. It will be kind of like pay to click sites. The member willingly clicks ads, it goes to a website, and they get paid for it.

This kind of idea was used in some site called Agloco (its dead already). Basically members downloaded a toolbar that sits on the bottom of their desktop, and it shows text ads that rotate about every 20 seconds(while surfing the internet) They would have gotten paid around 50 cents an hour. Its a good concept and it has been pulled off (by AllAdvantage in 1999. They went bankrupt because of the dot com bubble)

What to guys think?

Pay Per Play is a great idea. I dont see how it can be annoying.

1. The ads are targeted to the content of the site.
2. They are proffesional and have trusted and large corporations (Taco Bell,HBO,Harley Davidson.) So ads arent "spammy"
3. It plays only once per visit.
4. If the visitor stays on the site, they wont hear another ad until 3 minutes, even if they refresh.

By the way its not $10 CPM, I think its about $4. $10 would be too crazy!

I agree that the audio ads arent appropriate for every site. Especially blogs that have visitors that want to read right away, and not have to wait for the ad to finish. I believe PPP is the next big thing on the internet.

One question for all of you. If Google would have introduced this exact same concept, would you still have the same opinions? I doubt it!

@138. Im agreeing 100%. I think it is all in the hands of Charles. He needs to take the appropriate steps and make a professional impression, both of which he has yet to do. But I guess we will see how it goes.

this idea actually sounds very compelling if done properly. $10 CPM?? Only play the ad on the first visit... make the add a simple Jingle like the Cingular sound plus a pleasant british female voice. I like it!

@136: Yes, do a search for the recent story on Dreamhost's "apology" for a major outage. Charles Elfin seems to have gone to the same charm school as that Josh guy.

This seems so unprofessional to me. I just subscribed to the TechCrunch RSS and this was the first feed post that I read. Is the internet run by 14-year-olds?
