Google Health Coming Soon?

googlehealth.jpgSpotted by Google Blogscoped is a login page for Google Health, Google’s entry into the online health records space. At the time of writing the site isn’t allowing logins, but it does include this text:

With Google Health, you can:
* Build online health profiles that belong to you
* Download medical records from doctors and pharmacies
* Get personalized health guidance and relevant news
* Find qualified doctors and connect to time-saving services
* Share selected information with family or caregivers

The other thing to note is the logo (we’ve included it in this post), it would appear that Google Health is going straight to Beta and not through Google Labs.

Google Health has been hampered by chronic fatigue syndrome in terms of its development, with the site being rumored to launch originally in May 2006. Microsoft even beat Google in the space, having launched its own online health product in October 2007.

    dayam..good getting involved in everything

  2. Alex

Health will be the # 1 vertical in 2008. Guaranteed!!!!

In March there is a healthcare model being announced that should become the stepping stone to changing this horrific healthcare system in this country.

….AND NO it not Google, Microsoft or Yahoo….

  3. AtlantaVentures

The same mistake that yahoo made. Trying to be everything to everyone. Just what everyone is asking for. Medical information being farmed and “googled.” But wait, did you hear it comes with “sss” secure socket for the sick!?!

  4. Jaisen

It’s unrealistic for Google to be all things to everyone. This is such a huge undertaking that I think will turn out being a waste of time/money for Google. I think a company like Microsoft has much more “trust” from users than Google.

But a new brand might even be better for “trust”. Google’s known to uncover data and let anyone search for it. Even though Google Health won’t follow that model…that’s what they’re known for and the Google brand doesn’t help in this market because of security concerns.

Take Google Apps for Your Domain for example - does any company who’s really concerned with privacy use a hosted service for email?

    Uphill battle for Google.

  5. renata

    Bring it on!

  6. get reay

now soon others will be able to see all your health records in google search pages

  7. Aaron Mentele

“Download medical records from doctors and pharmacies”
    Good luck.

  8. Steel

Google is HUGE. But they better learn about HIPPA and the AMA. This WILL be shot down like a quail at Thanks giving. They’re barking up the wrong tree.

  9. johns

They want a shot at getting some of those drug ads! Once GOOG gets a look at your health records, why, they’ll be able to pitch all sorts of pharmaceutical solutions to your problems. Just make sure to read the side effect list :)

  10. pooja

even now a days people use google to search for symptoms and cure of diseases google is also researching on human genetic code..google health may be a break through in this field

  11. Greg

Google and online data is all cool, but giving them your medical records, that’s too much. This looks like a call for a security standard regulation. Seriously, wouldn’t you want to be sure that your data is VERY secure there? And that they have absolutely no way of using it for their marketing purposes.

  12. Ryan - Tech Span

Google, as always, justifies its ‘Company with a difference tag’.

Google health will definitely go a long way in addressing our health concerns considering the stressed out lives we live today.

  13. Patient Dave

Gives a whole new meaning to “Google Docs.”

  14. EMR and HIPAA

I agree that Google being able to upload data from doctors and pharmacies is just unreasonable. No incentives for doctors to care.

If Google implements support for CCR, then many of the electronic medical record companies out there have already implemented that standard. Otherwise, my guess is that Google can upload from a handful of doctors and pharmacies in the Valley. Maybe it’s just a Google Health for employees. Then, they can mine their employees health data to make decisions.

  15. deb

this will be another flop like google answer

  16. chris

Now if today would’ve been April 1, then I would’ve just found it actually funny.

  17. Chris R

I don’t know if this concept is just ridiculous or some sort of “beginning of the end”.

Fcuk Google for wanting to dominate everybody.

  18. InsuranceWatch

    Google Pages
    Google Talk
    Google Finance
    Google This
    Google That
another google app, google is trying to keep its stock up.
none of its products other than search, search related and gmail really took of or are profitable.

  19. CanCar

Esperaré por ella. All the tools of Google are instructive and functional, therefore I think that this will not be the exception. I will hope it.

  20. Vince

Remember that highest bid for ad words is “Mesothelomia”, a rare cancer. Health is a rentable buisness for Google. Now they’ll be able to prevent more fraudulant clicks : Why are you looking for a cure if you do not have a cancer? The same certainly go for aids… Maybe the price of the click will be higher if you’re really sick? “The misfortune of one is the happiness of others”.

“* Share selected information with family or caregivers”
I can’t wait for the next GReader mistake when you’ll unfortunately anounce to your familly, boss and friends that you have aids…

And we should trust a “beta” service ?!

    Already sick of it!

  21. Naren Pingle

Google has a decent database of everything and seems that it wants to use everything it has. I am really curious to know how it will be and what else functions it will have?

  22. Lelia Katherine Thomas

Google seems to be under the assumption that our doctors and chemists are savvy and organized enough to participate in this sort of thing.

I agree with the other comments, too, that Google is trying too hard to be in everything at once. There are services that Google provides which I could not live without (e.g., Gmail, Reader, Maps), but then others don’t even cross my mind (e.g., Orkut, Notebook, Finance). At some point, Google is going to lose money from making all these needless services.

  23. .rb

@15 Goog answers wasn’t a flop (it will reappear)

    - This isn’t something they are trying to do by hand! so if its done with computers that were programmed by Google employees - it will get done faster and better than anyone else.

    - They wanted to organize the worlds information - They meant it

  24. Jorge

If this were Microsoft, you all would be screaming how evil it is and how it destroys privacy.

  25. bs

they are 3 years late. microsoft and yahoo already have this.

  26. bs

yes google answers was a flop fucking idiot.

  27. sg

Wait for MedGoline to be launched. Not really doing what Google is doing but a true medical social segment addressed.

  28. steve

The einsteins at google are running out of ideas in their 20% time…

  29. TJ

Google has no idea what’s ahead. Changing consumer behavior around health is perhaps the hardest challenge on the planet….add the complexity of government bureaucracy and you might as well thrown your money down the toilet now.

EMR and personal medical records are interesting issues…but certainly not the most pressing issues in healthcare. Perceived value proposition is not high…so there is little incentive to act.

Additionally, all the blather about US Healthcare being broken is completely without merit. Sure there are issues, including inefficiencies and resulting costs, but ask anyone with some education, and who understands other markets, beyond what Michael Moore feeds them, “where would you rather get treatment…the US or Canada, UK etc.?”

  30. Jali

Google wants to try health. Maybe we should hear what our doctor would says.

  31. Abby Normal

They’re biting off a lot. They’ll roll out everything except the medical records download. Doing the last-mile integration into medical establishments is a hairy problem, from a technical perspective, a legal/HIPAA perspective, and from usability and process perspective. The consumer value proposition of having my health information online is unclear. It’s not saving me money, it’s not information I need to access frequently, and the privacy risk is a big deterrent.
