23andMe Now Available In Europe, Canada

23andMe, the consumer genetics testing company founded by Sergey Brin’s wife Anne Wojcicki, is now available in Europe and Canada.
The service, which launched in November enables customers to search and discover whether their genes make them more predisposed to certain outcomes, such as cancer or other illnesses.
Michael signed up for a 23andme kit in December. You can read his experience with the service so far here and here.
No word as yet as to when the service will be available outside of Europe and North America. You never told us what your results ended up being? Might shed some light into why your hair is the way it is?
23and me is very cool but will take years to scale. The real profit story is behind Illumina. They enable the genetic analysis through their technology. In 2007, Forbes named them the fastest growing tech company.
Could make you ponder what happens if government agencies, insurance companies and employers get their hands on your results. Maybe another way to justify a phony war on terrorism.
Arrington, have you heard back on your genetic test yet?
I talked with some doctors about 23andme last weekend. They brought up the fact that knowledge about a pre-disposition towards an illness may invalidate your ability to legally obtain life or health insurance for that condition.
I wonder if they warn you about this when you sign up?

more basically, genes have little to do with anything, they are not “cause”, they are effect, meaning, the body is the distillate of consciousness, and subject to far more subtle causes than anything that can yet be analyzed
crude example, some people with hiv don’t get aids
self-fulfilling prophecy, the reverse placebo effect, whatever we call it, beyond mere curiousity, thinking you know something is not always useful
and as for abuse, “big pharma” will find something to do there, i am sure of that
