This is quite possible, because we inherit genes from both sides of our families. Sometimes you can have two brown eyed people who produce a blue eyed child. It's all down to which gene's dominate at the time. Probably both your parents carry a blond gene, and a brown gene each, and on this occasion blond dominated! Genes can be quite complex sometimes.

Is it possible to get a free kit? I believe it would be helpful for me to understand how I developed Hydrocepalus. There is no way I can afford the $400.00.
Thanks

I want to know my genetic history, including ethnic origins and biogeographical ancestry.

I would like to know if I have any genetic flaws I could pass down to my decendents and if they are preventable.

I was a slow learner and think I may have passed down the genetic disposition to my children. Is there something one can do to turn on the brain to better educate one's self?

I worry that I may have the gene for Alzheimer and want to be able to plan for my future before I am afflicted with it.

I have Barrett's Osphagus and worry it may turn to cancer. What treatments will I respond best to and what should I avoid?

I am 64 and want to know why I am aging faster then most people my age?

Eighty percent of my family has had or died from some form of cancer. My daughter's and nieces are having hysterectomies in their late 30's and early 40's mainly out of fear. It is suspected that we have the Lynch Syndrome. My father had colon and kidney cancer. I had uterine and my sister had ovarian cancer. I would like to prevent all the unnecessary surgeries and encourage regular colonoscopes. Please send me the free 23andMe test kit.

[...] “At a dinner last night at the World Economic Forum in Davos, 23andMe founders Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki announced that they are providing 1,000 free 23andMe personal DNA testing kits to conference attendees. Damn, I thought, I already paid $1,000 (more) for my kit (so much for the benefits of being an early adopter). […]” via TechCrunch [...]

I found out at age 14 that I was adopted. I then learned both my biological parents were adopted. I was even told that my mother was given to her adoptive family like an illegal adoption. Therefore I have always believed I would die without ever knowing what blood ran through my veins, my heritage, or any geneological history. I don't know my ethnicity. I have always felt like a lost soul and have nothing to pass to my only daughter as far as geneolgy. I have never had any medical history. I ran away at the age of sixteen and never looked back. I lost all contact. I have struggled to manage and survive. I am a school teacher with very limited income so I could never afford to do any research about this or DNA testing. I would be eternally grateful to be offered this opportunity. I hope you will consider me. Sincerely, Mariah

Hi everyone, thank you for all the great submissions (even the funny ones). Based on the type of results that the company gives back, a lot of the people looking for specific disease information would be disappointed. However, the adoption cases are really interesting. I've decided to give the kit to Sky, #110, for his adopted girlfriend. This was a really hard choice, and it came down to a random selection of five or so comments. Sky, 23andMe will be emailing you.

A free kit would be a great! This would allow me to prepare for the future while appreciating my past. From MS to cancer to depression, from Germany to England to Norway, what a uniquely wonderful gift to really understand who I am.

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.

We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.

But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

In any case, it is better to make sure you know the known, than it is to fear the unknown known.

(Based on the works of the great poet, but lesser politician Donald Rumsfeld)

I was adopted in 1966 and recently hired a PI to find my birth parents. They turned up nothing which was very disappointing -- not because I wanted a relationship with my birth parents, or because I needed to learn about my ancestry for ego purposes -- but because I want even the most superficial clues as to what is lying in wait in the dark recesses of my genetic material... My adopted mother passed away a few years ago and I found this great shot of her from the 1930s, when she was a little girl. Looking at it, I wondered: What if she had had the foresight that someday cancer was gonna wipe her out? She looks blissfully unaware in the photo that 70 years hence she was gonna get creamed by the "lurkers" in her double helix. I know this sounds like a sob story, but honestly if I have to answer "I don't know, I'm adopted" one more time at the Dr's office, when asked about my medical history, I'm gonna scream.

Or maybe invest in 23andme!

I want to know what kind of pain and torture I am in for in the future. I have already seen every male in my family get skin cancer so far so I have at least a little idea of the fun. My mom was also adopted so I have no idea what traits I will be getting from her side of the family. It could explain my receding hairline when everyone on my dad's side has a full head of hair. I also want to find out what I might pass onto my future children.

All that and it just sounds cool.

I think you should award it to someone who has actually gone to the 23andme site and knows what you'll be getting i.e. very little of the above

truthfully ... I am not particularly interested in this sort of testing for myself at the moment, as I got way too much laid out already funding others DNA testing in genealogical research ... but hey, if it will help my family to know what I might have passed onto them, sure I will enter my name into the hopper too :)

As an immigrant from Sri Lanka, I'm always amazed at the variety of nationalities that most individuals in the United States represent. One may be german, polish, irish and native american. The possibilities are endless. Yet, I am 100% Sri Lankan. Or, am I? I would like to find out exactly where my roots lie.

In addition, as a fairly young individual, finding out about genetic mishaps now can help me be more cautious for the future. A future of heart disease is quite the motivator for 5 o'clock running sessions.

I'm somewhat adopted and have no way of tracking down my birth father (I was raised by my mother). I'd really like to have a better understanding of what genetic issues I might have.

I do not want the test for myself, but would like to give it to someone like #172 who has African origins, but who would also agree to donate their sequence to science as Craig Venter and James Watson did.

Hi,
Today my wife was diagnosed to have a inheritable blood illness. In order for my 4 year old daughter not to have to go through the same traumatic analysis process, I would like her to take this test.

I am curious both about my genetic background and about 23andMe results, especially if they would successfully diagnose some of diseases that afflict me.
And I'm a developmental biologist, so I'm also scientifically intrigued about the process.
