Google Offers OpenID Logins Via Blogger

bloggerindraft.jpgAfter testing OpenID’s as logins to Google’s Blogger in Draft program in November, Google has become an OpenID provider itself. The news confirms TechCrunch UK’s story of January 9, which also predicted that IBM and VeriSign would soon be joining the OpenID train.

Effective immediately, Blogger users are able to use their blogs URL as an OpenID login, after toggling the option via the draft.blogger.com admin menu. Google’s baby steps follow the announcement last week that over 250 million Yahoo users would be able to use their Yahoo logins as OpenID. Reports have put users of Blogger at somewhere between 10 million and 50 million, although the service is renowned as a haven for spam so how many legitimate bloggers will take up this service is unclear. It also isn’t being provided as yet via the regular Blogger quite yet, only via the Blogger in Draft service (although this is available to those who wish to use it), however this is the regular first step for new features in Blogger so it could be expected to become a standard option sometime later this year.

As soon as Yahoo expressed an interest
    - Google one-uped them

this was expected after yahoo joining the openid arena…….but not so immediately atleast…….

Excellent. With so many providers entering the fray it means I can start adding OpenID to websites and not have to worry about my own half-baked schemes. Everyone has either AIM, Yahoo, or Google.

Only one problem: how to explain OpenID to end users and make them aware of how to use it without a long-ass tutorial?

…wonders whether she is legitimate or illegitimate.

    …wonders if anyone can tell.

    OpenID continues to gain momentum.

They didn’t really match the Yahoo offering though. Yahoo now offers OpenID to anyone with an email account where as Google is only offering it to people who use Blogger. I think it would be better if they also offered the same capability for gmail users.

Before long there’s gonna be OpenID Providers all over the place — we’ll help OpenID Users to Manage their OpenIDs :-D

Nice to see Yahoo! support OpenID.

It’s a good start… but what we really need Google and Yahoo (and other large sites) to do is allow users with other OpenIDs to login to their services, i.e. they need to be a relying party.

It’s not really in the spirit of OpenID to be a provider but not a relying party (unless you’re only a provider)

This is all utter non-sense. I have 8 OpenID (myopenid.com, claimid.com, Verisign, Technorati, Jyte, Pibb, Wordpress.com, Blogger ) and only 3 places I can actually use it (Plaxo,Basecamp,Ma.gnolia, Mixx). We need more OpenID consumers and fewer producers. Or we need the web sites to be both providers and producers. All we need now is for LinkedIn to enter the fray and I’ll have 9.

I think Google played a smart hand by using the Blogger address as the OpenID username, as a large number of OpenID users are blog commenters, but how many Google Account holders use Blogger? Do we really want our blog address to be used on commercial sites?

This is great! So as soon as I can figure out how to find the feature in my blogspot login I can start to use my blogspot login everywhere!

Does this mean that everywhere can now start editing my comedy blog! Holy cats! That’s terriffic! The quality of my spelling is sure to go up! If not the quality of my jokes. On second thought, the quality of my jokes might go up too!

I have to admit that the idea of open id is attractive, but I feel a little queasy about using 1 id all over the place. Naturally it would be crazy to use it for my financial sites, but still, you wind up having a lot of different sites you want to log into and I wonder. How secure really is open id technology from hackers, crackers, whackers, smackers and the oh so sad Green Bay Packers?

    Just asking.
