"sky (January 11th, 2008 at 8:13 pm )
I use whatever technologies required. After all, learning Ruby, RoR,
Java, C++ takes less time than learning how to solve Maxwell’s
wave equation which is, by the way, far more interesting.
Computing is only a tool to solove problems."

There you go...
at last somebody said it :)

Come on... Its just a "language".
if you are REALLY a System Engineer then learning a "language" could take you about... what? a week?

There are some interesting points on the Ruby-Inside blog http://www.rubyinside.com/rails-web-host-engine-yard-now-35-million-richer-694.htm From a commenter:

"EY on the other hand is making a very calculated move to tie the future of Ruby to their products so they can rent you their $400 p/h Ruby architects (not kidding)."

Didn't Benchmark also invest in MySQL, Jboss. It is the same deal. This is not about hosting.

@ted

Agreed , I believe they also have shown client side php using silverlight now as well. Although I've never tried it myself.

.NET has a very bright future , and the JVM is gaining steam with Groovy, jruby and Scala as of late.

It's a fun time to experiment.

Nima,

I've used both RoR and .NET. For me, personally, I find it .NET to be more productive than RoR. Of course it's not 100% pure .NET but more like Visual Studio and .NET.

Hi,

The Hosting and deployment scenerio is going to change a lot after the implementation of Windows server 2008 along with IIS-7 in February 2008.

The Zend and MS partership for an Apache alternate and fast CGI implementation would create a revolution.

The blog below was a real opener for me.
http://ironruby.blogspot.com/2008/01/classic-ruby-losing-against-ironruby.html

This clearly focus more on what i mentioned above plus the advantages of Ironruby over Ruby and Ruby on rails.

WoW! interesting things are taking shape.

Sorry I don't proof read my posts. But I do admit my grammar is abysmal especially when commenting.

I have a CS degree thanks, and I use Java and .NET on my day to day just as much as I use RoR. That is the whole point of my argument. Apparently your comprehension skills match my grammar.

Actually I just released a new version of my gel electrophoresis analysis suite which is written all in java in the fall, it is a very good language.

I am quite positive someone who feels the need to insult in such a manner probably isn't too decorated a programmer anyways.

Nima:

You clearly are not a person with supporting education in either computer science or English.

Go back to using R on R -- which I am quite positive is perfect for someone of your limited talent -- and save us all from your grammatically inferior ramblings.

@Ted,

I'm not specifically for rails either , please don't misconstrue my post. But to say "oh .NET or J2EE is all I'll ever need , everything else has no merit" is silly.

In answer to your really informed question:

All the languages mentioned in those camps are turing complete (java , ruby , C#/F#/et.al) so your question is meaningless , see jruby , and the DLR as cited examples of what I mean.

There are some tasks that I can get the job done FASTER AND BETTER with in each language. If I'm going to do some quant , I'm gonna use F# or maybe haskell. If I want to create a windows driver , I'm probably going to lean towards C++/MFC 9.

There is a tool for every task. You don't have to use 7 different ones on the same project , few projects have such a scope , but when you are faced with such a challenge its important to have the right mindset.

Thats why I mentioned thrift, and there are other projects like it.
If you actually ever used it , instead of going to the site for 5 minutes and writing it off , you would see that it's actually not THAT complex and not THAT hard to implement , and if your managerial style is to throw your hands in the air and say

"were too dumb to use that" , then I feel sorry for your aforementioned clients.

@Nima,

James said he found productive staff in "Java" and ".NET". So that'll be more than 1 language and more than 1 framework.

When your client requests you to write something that integrates nicely with ActiveDirectory, SharePoint and MS Office, Ruby on Rails isn't going to cut it. For me, Java (and its libraries) and .NET (with its libraries) fill everything you need.

Can you point out which part of Ruby on Rails that the Java/.NET can't do?

While Thrift is nice, if your software team isn't anywhere as smart as FB engineers (or as many as them), chances are you're going to have maintenance nightmare had you choose to use too many languages.

I've deploy my own Rails apps (as well as Java and PHP apps) in the past on various vendors (Rackspace, EC2, even GoDaddy), but I am now an Engine Yard customer for the same reasons that Chris Osborne mentions.

The process of hosting, managing and maintaining servers are only strategic in a small number of businesses. Unless you have the man-power or the size to worry about the bottom line, paying a premium for a full-service vendor like Engine Yard makes sense.

In the past, it would take me weeks to get a solid production environment setup with a hosting vendor. With EngineYard, it literally took me 20 minutes.

@James,

Any team who binds them-self to just one language and one framework is silly.

Haven't you heard of post modern programming?

Or were you too busy chest pounding?

Check out thrift , pretty amazing contribution by the FB team. Open your eyes there is no one true way.
