I second the idea of college students -- Get the college students involved, for they are making amazing strides in their work at the top tier art / animation schools. They would jump at the chance to make money from their work and there is a great possibility that the next Pixar-like artists will come from those colleges out there - they just need to be given the medium to show their work, and I think AniBoom is a great opportunity for that. What about creating a Facebook app for Aniboom targeting the top tier art colleges?

Michael, this is not really ethical to write about a crunchies nominee without disclosing it. there is no special announcement it here and i dont' see the point of this article except giving more visibility to a candidate. so please add a disclosure mention

"...When the worlds of animation, licensing, and merchandising collide...."

You forgot one other world - Jamster spending up to 40 million euro in a *quarter* on ads that dupe kids and teens into spending $10-$20 a month on ring tones (I am talking 2005/6 here). You are bound to get noticed. There are models out there though which did not piss off half the world's pontential mobile content customers and it would be better to read about them.

This is what happens when you take a mainstream product (animation) make a 10x change in one of its key parameters (typically cost but not always) and find niche, emerging markets for it.

Pixar disrupted Hollywood in its time. Eventually it will be disrupted by a startup like this.

i think the idea is very good but risky. Its like youtube trying to make a studio for comedy sketches. The business model is truly tough but feasible.

Went to their site, and the content is good but makes you beg for better, theses guys have nothing on pixar. They should try to publish professionals stuff with this amateur stuff.

all in all i will join, i am an animator

"The crazy thing about crazy frog is that there was no master plan behind its making"
Precisely, so trying to unbake that cake to find the ingredients for its (somewhat bizarre) success is going to be difficult... morphing "a series of lucky accidents into a pitch-to-production methodology" takes more than just cash, time and marketing muscle - it takes creativity, an idea that has the ability to chime with a vast audience and bucket loads of luck.

Its nice to see a company focused on the quality of content produced instead of the site's traffic metrics.

A suggestion for Uri: reach out to students. Universities and tech colleges are where future animators train, and where many new ideas & talents germinate; why not tap that resource? Offer students the revenue sharing deal, and I'm sure they'd jump at the opportunity for exposure and profit.

The post highlights the level of experimentation that may be required before AniBoom gets it right.

Given the niche and with adequate resources and the right players, it could very well be worth it.

I don't see why the CEO of this site doesn't partner with an open source animation app -- there are a lot of good ones out there.

FYI, the Crazy Frog link isn't working (first sentence 4th paragraph)
