Would they purchase a domain name if we searched it for 5 days straight and require us to pay the high fees, or would they drop it after 5 days no matter what? If they would purchase it, could we fight back by continually searching a list of random character domain names every day?

Network Solutions is the worst! Clearly they only care about only making a profit versus providing any value to their clients. In addition to experiencing all of the problems listed they also got me for a privacy renewal fee for $9.99 on a domain I don't intend to renew. They don't tell you have to turn off domain renewal and privacy renewal. It's also craftily diminished in the setting where as domain renewal is in red. Companies like this will burn everybody eventually.

How is this legal?

This is the greatest breach of user trust and confidence. This is shameful and highly anti-competitive in nature.

And another reason why NetSol becomes even more irrelevant in the 21st century.

NETWORK SOLUTIONS ARE LEGAL SCAM ARTISTS

I learned a lesson from NETWORK SOLUTIONS that cost me a bundle!
I had a web site homeforsaleexpert.com, that a lot of work and time went into. I had it on all my business cards and recently no one could find it. I had renewed it in November 08.
Anyone that every used NSI knows they bill you constantly so when I was getting renewal notices I just deleted them as I knew my other 2 sites were recently renewed.
Having been with the company for many years, upon renewing I assumed the whole package was renewed, never gave it a second thought. Come to find out, they only renewed the web site, with no domain name and then sold the domain name! WOW. They said they sent me renewal notices, etc. So if you deal with those crooks, be careful! They are the deluxe rip off artists. I tried everything to resolve it but they want $150.00 to buy back my own domain name! How ethical is that? I will shout their dishonesty from the roof tops and all the business I sent them will be getting a recall along with my canceling my sites as they come up for renewal.
They are modern day, legal scam artist.

and don't give us that .20 cent per domains BS excuse. You pay more in PPC advertising for JUST ONE VISITOR on your web site. In fact NSI's cost to acquire a customer is probably $20-30 so GIVE ME A BREAK when you factor in marketing. 20 cents is pretty damn cheap to acquire targetted leads who are forced to buy the name from you (or call on the phone - right like anyone wants to do that).

Oh please Ellen. I worked for a competitor of yours for 8 years and you know exactly what you are doing. There is no misconception - you were locking up the domain which essentially forced someone to register it from you. Other registrars implemented this as an opt-in (i.e. if you want, we will lock up this domain and you don't have to pay for 4 days). It was not done without the user's consent.

I work for Network Solutions and this is the most misunderstood concept that I have to explain to customers. We do not REGISTER the domain that someone searches for. We don't even MAKE anyone register it with us. This was implemented to stop "domain tasting," a practice where one has a script that will monitor registrars for searched domains. If I search for MYBLUEHEAVEN.COM and one of these scripts picks it up, the person/entity will register the domain for 5 days, knowing they can cancel and won't be out a nickel. If someone calls in (and it happens often) and says they want to register it elsewhere, we simply remove the reservation. That's it. No hijacking and hostages taken. Network Solutions is actually on the forefront of having ICANN make the registries charge a .20 cent fee for each domain name deleted within that five day period. Doesn't sound like a lot? Well these people will register thousands at a time. Even 1,000 domains at .20 cents a pop is $200. Sorry, but this misconception aggravates the hell out of me as I'm one of the ones who has to explain it. Ignorance is NOT bliss. It's a pain in my ass.

Please Michael Arrington write about this AGAIN!!!!!!

Unaware of any of this...I tested several domain names on Godaddy last week. (I never used Network Solutions) and then went to purchase them today. All were bought by a company called Metapredict. Further research shows a connection to a company called RPM - who registered their domain through Godaddy.

Metapredict seems to be kiting over 500,000 names a week. I called Godaddy to complain and the customer service person I spoke to knew nothing about this. If Godaddy is innocent in this too they need to put a warning on the home page of their site and tell users how to protect themselves. Godaddy spends millions on its superbowl commercials to reach the average person. If they are not partners with these guys then they should actively be educating users. Because the average person would not know to wait five days to see if it is released and would simply give up. - that has to be costing Godaddy millions a day...unless they are in on it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a service provider I recommend my customers to switch to other providers of domain service.
I had several bad experiences with this company. There mail support is really bad.
There are other companys with much better service.
Stay away - you will not be wrong...
