Linked just for the funniest line I’ve seen in a while.

@TC!: I expect the Xbox360 will COME WITH BLUE RAY DRIVES. Probably near end of year and defiantly before middle next year.

It would be a very good move to move fast on this for Microsoft, and take out one of the only good reasons to purchase a PS3. Its a BD player.

Xbox with a BD would really damage PS3 to the point of Sony considering pulling it. In my opinion!

“If Steve Jobs got on a stage and showed off a voice controlled car messaging and entertainment system, prototype camera phone with HUD […] the fanboys would be twitching in pools of drool.”

That’s because if Steve Jobs showed that stuff, you’d be able to buy most of it that day."

Damn straight, Dan, right on the money."Real artists ship".

"seems like they aren’t as exciting."

Seems? They "seem" like they aren't as exciting (Microsoft Keynotes) because, people, the turth is they suck. Would anyone care to run down the list of dorky vapourware one-ofs that Microsoft perenially introduces, only to watch as the product disappears, never to be heard of again?

Anyone here have a Mira? A copy of Microsoft Bob? One of those idiotic watches? How many Origami devices got sold?

And seriously people. Apple gave us the iPhone and Microsoft demoes a giant table that isn't actually a touch device, but hides a Vista PC with a projector and a collection of infra red detectors?

Give it a rest. There is no need to defend the Microsoft CES Keynotes because there is nothing to defend.

You want to see where the personal computer and consumer electronics are going? You watch Steve Jobs and Apple. It's that simple.

Astrocars! Jetpacks! Robbie the robot! This presentation was about the present, not the future, only dressed up in a bunch of what-ifs, maybe-thens, and wouldn't-it-be-profitable-for-Microsofts. I think we'll look back on it as a marvelously silly laundry list of today's approach to technology and experience, only dressed up with the aerodynamic fins, spools of magnetic tape, and other outdated symbols of tomorrow. I've written about it at some length at DIM BULB if you'd like to check it out: http://dimbulb.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/01/window-on-the-f.html

I guess it would take a Microsoft fanboy to think this column was completely biased. The dude said he both liked and didn't like a few Microsoft technologies and some of you got the impression he TOTALLY hates Microsoft. Get a freaken life. It's Bill's swan-song, I think people were expecting a little more.

Bill Gates is single-handedly responsible for setting technological progress back a good twenty years. Microsoft and Windows are boat anchors that drag us down and away from innovation and the sooner both are gone the better off we'll all be.

Since when was Bill Gate EVER a visionary ? He's been a brilliant and shrewed businessman, but he's never, ever, been someone who's been able to predict the future. The ideas he presents are all second hand rejects from more forward thinking companies like Google and Apple. ZzzzzZZZzzz

Bill's saying that within the next 5 years there will be thousands of people using touch technology to interface with their computers. Yeah Bill, you bet. It's called the 'iPhone' !

Microsoft's great ideas ? Tablet PCs ? SPOT ? or - god forbid - Bob ???

@James Gardiner - how do you think Microsoft is doing in the battle for the entertainment system of the future now that warner bros has dropped HD DVD like a hot turd and paramount is likely to follow?

@andy, you wrote:
"Windows Server 2008 (think Server Core and Virtualisation), Visual Studio 2008 (easy .NET 3.5 web services) and IIS 7 (think lightweight easy deployment) could reignite interest in using .NET and Microsoft products as the technology stack for Web 2.0."

You need to be Microsoft certified just to understand half that crap.

>how, in 2008, have we come to a point that Microsoft is so bereft of new ideas and innovation...

Is this a new development? Or is it 1990 through 2007 aqain?

dude, even for techcrunch, you suffered a new low in banality. can't you figure out a cleverer adjective than "sucked" to describe the speech?

if not, then that indeed would "suck"

I've got BillG's 1994 CES keynote around here somewhere on VHS. It was freakin' amazing. It was all about predicting the world in 2005. The great thing about it is, the audience was sniggering through most of it, thinking he was off his tree, but you know? 90% of it was right on the money.

That said, in my MS days, when we'd all got to the US for internal love-ins, Bill was always a bit of an anti-climax. I'm a BillG fanboy but he has the charisma of a used tissue. And the more his speeches got scripted by the PR dept, the less interesting he became. Post-DOJ it became pretty dull.

Ballmer was always the one who kept you awake for hours and hours and hours with his ranting and bouncing and screaming. I remember him giving a three hour talk once in New Orleans. 98 I think it was. Finished about 2am. Unbelievable.

"If Steve Jobs got on a stage and showed off a voice controlled car messaging and entertainment system, prototype camera phone with HUD [...] the fanboys would be twitching in pools of drool."

That's because if Steve Jobs showed that stuff, you'd be able to buy most of it that day.

Bill Gates is many things, but he's most certainly not an "engineer". I can't believe people even see him that way - what a warped perception of reality. Tell me, what engineering qualification does he have?

He's a college drop-out who wrote a few lines of code when he was young. His crowning achievement was selling IBM an operating system his company didn't even own at the time - and then going out and buying it.

None of this has anything to do with engineering. It's amazing that people believe this line. It's exactly what he wants you to believe, that he's just a nerd who cares about software. And that is total BS.

His talent is licensing software on his terms. Oh, and lying to IBM. And generally screwing people over for money by over-promising and under-delivering.

Ballooning CES risks becoming irrelevant
The Consumer Electronics Show, which opens today in Las Vegas, risks irrelevance from popularity. With 1.8m square feet of space and 2,700 exhibitors, the show’s now far bigger than former rival Comdex – which imploded under its own weight. CES should split.

Why do all of my favorite sites (Joel on Software, TechCrunch) feel the need to stay "hip" by becoming absurdly anti-Microsoft that I could predict the content of the post CES article without even reading the title? I thought the keynote was like any other demonstration, some cool stuff mixed in with some not so cool stuff, but it's Microsoft so we better post that it sucked.

I was "live" blogging last night during the keynote and I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it sucked.
