New Blog For European Startup News, From The Guys That Broke Into My House

If you don’t get your fill of European startup and tech news from TechCrunch France, TechCrunch UK (and many, many other excellent European blogs), you’ll want to make sure and check out a new one on the scene - The Next Web.

The team behind the project also puts on a conference under the same name in Amsterdam every year. And more notably, these are the guys who broke into my house (read the first paragraph) last year because they wanted to pitch me on some new product. Anyone that aggressive, and that lacking in basic common sense and decency, is sure to turn up with a good story every once in a while. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Good of you to give them props Michael :)

  2. CJ

interesting to read, thanks for the heads up

  3. erwin blom

Good news! Because there’s a lot happening in Europe that’s worth a mention!

  4. Reinier

Looks great, I think I will visit the conference this year.

  5. Alex

Great blog! I love that The Next Web is “The connection has timed out
The server at thenextweb.org is taking too long to respond.”

I was worried that the Next Web would be a lot different than this web. Apparently it’s not.

  6. Michael Arrington

Alex - yeah just noticed that myself.

  7. Eve

Yeah, if you get some competition, “slashdot” them!

  8. Michael Arrington

no, really. it’s a very nice blog when the server is turned on.

  9. Boris

@alex: yeah, that is an example of European humor. We thought it would be funny to crash the server at the exact same moment we got written about here just to illustrate that some things never change.

    Oh well…

Great initiative! hopefully hosting issues will be resolved soon, seems like being Techcrunched was more than the hoster could handle.

  11. Boris

Nah, the traffic didn’t kill our server. Murphy did. We received exactly 64 visitors from Techcrunch when the server sighed, rolled over and died. Maybe one of those 64 visitors was a really good hacker?

Anything that can help European start-ups the coverage / awareness they deserve (whether positive or negative) gets thumbs up from me!

I’ll probably start contributing a bit to The Next Web blog as from next week.

It’s conferences like The Next Web and my own (plugging Plugg here - click my name for more info) that we should see more all over the continent, including Eastern Europe where a lot of exciting things happen that remain unnoticed.

  13. Boris

Ok, the server is UP again. Check it out: http://thenextweb.org/

  14. Patrick

We’ve copied the whole enshalada and put it on a different server, should work again. Anyone a tip for a good hosting provider? Techcrunch seems to be quite stable… :)

  15. Abdul-Rahman Advany

website seems to be online again :)

  16. Michael Arrington

64 visitors crashed your site? May I recommend our sponsor, Media Temple, for all of your hosting needs?

  17. Patrick

    Thanks Michael :)
I don’t think it were the 64 visitors…, but we’re definitely going to look for a better solution.

  18. Sjors

Let’s hope that this pan-European can be one of the voices of the rise of the new European entrepreneurial spirit!

  19. Abdul-Rahman Advany

Or maybe a couple of slices @ slicehost.com? work fine for me

  20. Michael Arrington

Patrick - we can discuss the options the next time you break into my house for a chat.

  21. Patrick

@Michael Haha, the only thing is that I’m the only one who knows when that is going to happen, but it sounds like a plan :)

  22. Gonzague

The funny thing is that they’re really well know for the white suits. That how I spotted that Patrick (I guess) was at Leweb3 :-)

  23. imreme

Probably a future headline would be “thenextweb.org Blog For European Startup News, From The Guy That Broke Into My House again”

    would be interesting…

  24. joe shmo

    Michael,

If they had broken in and had not been wearing white suits, would you have been so nice to them.

Im just asking as I haven’t got a white suit, but I do have a cool pair of swimming trunks

  25. Patrick

@gonzague That was me indeed. Hope to get the possibility to have a chat with you next time. It wouldn’t be hard to recognize me unless @Joe shmo and all his friends have visited me tailor (New Tailor in Amsterdam)…

  26. Fadi

just called it TechCrunch NL since it looks like a TC and seems to want to walks the same path.
    They seem like nice enough people,, and get to write off trips to beautiful Amsterdam (;

  27. Fadi

    NL meant Netherlands

  28. Sasha

So… does it crash _every_ 64 users? If you guys insist on saving up memory by using 6 bit counters, at least handle the wrap-around!
    :)

  29. Jeroen Bakker

I think it’s been proven by now that the site doesn’t crash every 64 users… :)

  30. JeffC

The “break into house” angle will really screw with the minds of those who constantly post and complain about not being reviewed by Mike. They think to themselves and post in the Forum … “how can I get his attention, without coming across spammy or rude …”.

  31. AJ

Ah…white suits! Then, these must be the same guys?

  32. Boris

Ah yes, that is us at the Yahoo Brickhouse offices. We worked there as guests for a day…

  33. tim

    nice once, read it

  34. Arjen

Yes, especially with the demise of Blognation there is a need for a good European blog.

There’s a lot going on around here, it is only a little more difficult to find.

    Well done Boris!

  35. Marek

Europe will roll over US! :)

  36. Arne

Good news for Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Europe! Well done!
