Jim Choma’s Career Joins The Deadpool, Maybe

If there was one defining breakthrough in 2007 as opposed to the year before, it was live video. From Justin.tv through to the gauntlet of clones live video made its presence felt, even if it’s not dominate today.

Ustream.tv remains one of my favorite services. It doesn’t have the cool tech Kyte has, or perhaps the wider presence of Justin.tv, but it’s reliable, and it usually delivers. I regularly tune in to Chris Pirillo live, it’s an informative program where you learn stuff as well. Today (my time) I spent some time listening to The Drill Down, where I ended up getting exclusive news of the Digg girl and a possible record contract; it was a good example of where Podcasting meets live TV, a positive from the new wave of live content.

And then there was Jim Choma. I just happened to be on Ustream after the Drill Down podcast and saw him live, and that’s where the fun began. Jim runs sites including Zipperfish.com, he also hosts a live show on Ustream under the name of “The Walrus.” Jim likes a drink, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but we don’t normally stream the experience, complete with homophobia, swearing and nakedness. Once I Twittered the link his drinking session went from 30 viewers to over 100, and it went down hill from there, complete with a call in from me (the show is focused on live call ins) asking him how much he had to drink. Some short video I caught above and below. It was train wreck TV at its worst or perhaps best, but we were all compelled to watch it. If Jim had any career before it must surely join the deadpool now, or maybe not, after all drunk TV had some value tonight, at least from me and 100 others. Either way if the full Ustream clip gets released I’m betting this might well be the last great viral video of 2007.

I was watching, and it was awesome. Vale to Jim’s Ustream career, hello to his new career co-hosting Mahalo Daily (if Calacanis has any sense). Oh, and message to Scoble: no, we don’t want to see you do this.

I’m still laughing at this and I was there. I can’t wait to get a “Naked Time, Sexy Time” T-Shirt. Or maybe “I like The Walrus flabby”

Paul, Mike
the highlight of my year nearly. I wish I had the whole lot on video :-)

Ustream will put the entire video archive of this session up if they have any business sense whatsoever.

F*cking awesome. This is a bold, beautiful new world we live in. I love social media.

Duncan, do you monitor your old posts for comments? I tried to post to a comment in a one week old post and it did not show up!

I did put one url in it. Is your filter set to flag all urls for moderation, and if the post is old you forget about it?

Thanks,
Igor

classic, though i had trouble actually watching it. soo painful ;)

I gotta say, I love the twittosphere, it’s getting more and more amusing every day.

Duncan how about a year end review podcast style. Sit down with the rest of the crew via skype or whatever and just shoot the shit about the year and what to expect in 08. Peace.

It was very funny and compelling to watch in a sad way. Need the t shirt as suggested… Maybe saying “Hairy, not so tight Walrus”.

Where can Choma go from here to top that.. sadly I doubt that he can.

Ustream continues to lead the pack for content.

This is 100% classic.

Wow. Viral Video of the Year.

Duncan, something is wrong with your Spam filter!
I tried to post www dot aboutus dot org and your Spam filter blocks the url comment.

Are you using Akismet? If you are you are in trouble, because it blocks WikiPedia as well.

That is why I developed PHSDL to block only Malware domains Spam.

Igor

Duncan, not trying to Spam your board just running a simple forensic test..:)

Boy, this is kind of scary. According to this guy’s phone number, he lives right down the road from me here in sunny Brevard County, Florida. I would have thought a freak like this might be from southern California.

I didn’t see a reference to a “Jim Choma” on Zipperfish, but according to the WhoIs, it is owned by a Jeff Beard of Palm Bay, FL, who also runs a website hosting company called siteomatic.net. He also seems to be heavily involved with local artists in Brevard.

Then there is a “jack” listed at the Marketing department of Zipperfish. So is Jim Choma nothing but a CB handle for UStream.tv?

I’m not sure why you said he is acting like a homophobe. Isn’t a homophobe someone who is supposedly scared of gays or gay-lifestyles? He seemed to be embracing his gayness, if anything. Regardless, he was definitely drunk, so I don’t know that putting much stock into anything he said would be a good use of any of our time. “If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace.” (Prov 29:9).

If there’s a lesson to this story, it’s that live, unedited, unproduced TV will never be a money-making business. There’s a reason that editors and producers exist - and the absence of them here is a glaring contrast to even the worst show on the farthest corner of cable.

People wonder why the Numa Numa video continues to be popular after all these years. Just look at everything (like this) that has come after it. Has anyone really done anything much better?

Would it be bad if I said this wasn’t the worst thing I’d ever seen on ustream?

Duncan’s ashamed of being gay.. lol even deleted the post asking..

Duncan’s ashamed of being a faggot…lol

Live content and episodes like this will be more and more commonplace in 2008. And there will be a site to search for and find them.

http://www.nowhound.com

sign up for the beta. the site will hopefully be launching in January

That made me laugh. No deadpool for him. The kid’s got talent…and after all, he’s “freee!”

Duncan dude, I looked at the video, and I am sorry to say you are fixated on nakedness, not the message he imparting on the audiance!

The guy is talking about freedom of expression, freedom of speach!

It has nothing to do with being viral…

Why do you want to gag him? Are you a neo conservative?

Regards,
Igor

Why is this news?

Why in the world do I have to sift through your bullshit posts on TechCrunch? Are you still around Duncan? Do you post stupid shit like this in an attempt to stay relevant?

I think you are TechCrunch’s longest running joke…alright boys, April 1 has come and gone, time to move on!

I also blogged live video streaming is the highlight of 2007. I have a daily live tech show for anyone who likes live video and tech Mon-Thurs on PopSnap.net.

Mogulus.com has a player that let’s you edit live. This is something you can’t do on Ustream.tv.

You’re right. This is surely going to be one of the last great viral videos of 2007. Congratulations on finding something so rare as somebody ‘actin’ a fool’ live on camera, and for seeing it for what it was: not the current and tragic state of a troubled soul, but rather pure entertainment. Comedy at its finest! Your decision to post the link on Twitter, so all your friends could join the fun have a laugh, is nothing short of revolutionary.

Well played, Duncan. Well played.

Mogulus sucks Sarah. Sorry, it will never have mainstream adoption. Something simple and straight forward actually has a chance.

Mogulus doesn’t suck, but it definitely isn’t for mainstream. Ustream has a better shot in that regard because it is so simple and straightforward.

Ustream does seem to be everywhere these days. I saw Obama, Oprah, and Jack Nicholson on there all in the same week.

As for the video, wow.

Lolz. What’s the big deal. He’s naked and having fun. Rock on my friend.

I’m the first caller in the part 2 video…
What a jerk that guy is!

I managed to flame him a few times in my calls, and so did a buddy, but other than that he was pretty boring and not entertaining. If you think that was good you have to check out one of Mason Reed’s experiments.

http://www.thisismason.com

Funniest thing I’ve seen in a while on the internet - something fresh - the dude probably is regretting the whole darn thing.

I checked out live for the first time - kinda enjoyed myself. Got me a Ustream account - yeah!

Funny! Also this post in techcrunch making it viral.

you know guys, ive oftn thought that nudity is our primal right. to see ourselves as we should be. i feel this is especially correct as i am drunk right ! long live ireland! i love life!

RFLAMO. I just reposted in a few spots at live journal.

It’s free to be naked yeaaahh! If you close your eyes you can hear bob dylan. It’s freet o be naked yeaaaah.

Personally, I think this is very poor style, Duncan. How much do you think the guy regrets that video after he sobered up again? You might have very well blown up his career by posting that crap on TC. Bad karma points… Get some ethics and stop making fun of people who are obviously not in control of what they’re doing - be it due to alcoholism, (mental) illnesses or whatever else…

Poor guy.

There’s Social Media - and then, apparently, there’s Social Faux Pas Media.

The price of fame + camera + broadcast medium is often too high.
He’s probably feeling about like David Hasselhoff - only at least there wasn’t food involved.

1-321 yikes, he lives near me! - unelss its a VoIP service

I agree with the post above, I’m waiting for a “naked time, sexy time” t-shirt. Maybe with a walrus in the background.

Thank God for that Zipperfish ad in the second video.

I used to deal with Jim on a rare occasion. I doubt he remembers me, but he has some comedic genius in him. If you watch more than his live show most of you will see that. Watch some to see it….

Best one to date IMO

omg, he must be f*** shamed. :-S Did anyone hear from him since then?

Update from comment #32.

I’ve tried them all…for what it’s worth, here are my comments:

Ustream.TV: Simple, reliable, alot of buried functionality - kept finding cooler stuff as I learned the site. Probably my favorite

Kyte.TV: Seems like alot of hype. Disconnect between what they’re trying to do and what they’re users experience. I like the mobile possibility, but couldn’t get it to work.

Justin.TV: the friendster of Live. Smoke and mirrors. The site sucks, bare bones on features. Once I was up and running, I felt like I was added to a collection of freak shows.

Mogulus.com: complex but some neat features. felt like a ghost town though. Definitely the smallest among the group.

I think “live video” is interesting, definitely had some fun! my 2 cents.

P.S. Being live and global and knowing people in Japan/China could see me was powerful

to clarify….what I meant by “justin.tv is THE FRIENDSTER OF LIVE” is that the site was unreliable - definitely had alot of performance issues with stream reliability, stream loss, etc.

sorry for not clarifying the reference

This is just lame. And goofy. He’s probably drunk too.

I think that in the breakthroughs of 2007, in the live video field you left out blogTV.com.
Launched in May, the site has acquired more than 120,000 registered users (in a period of 6 months), and many loyal and talented broadcasters. I think if you log-on to blogTV.com you will get addicted to some of the shows, because there are some people doing crazy stuff over there, too.

One of the people in your comments wanted to to share Jim’s ethunder as a result of this post.

I think he got what he wanted:

http://community.livejournal.c.....tml#cutid1

In a strange way, he reminded me of Steve Martin, unfettered. That night was definitely a train wreck, but funny still.

this post must’ve been dugg…there’s way too many rude and uncalled-for comments on it.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
