Digg May Land Digg Girl Record Contract

Kina Grannis, the girl behind the now internet famous “Digg Song” (video above) has been approached by a record company interested in discussing a record deal.

Artists signing deals as a result of viral videos aren’t new, but this would be a first for one that combines viral video with Digg, and about Digg.

Grannis appeared live on the Drill Team Ustream show tonight (still live at the time of writing, so no archival footage currently available). Grannis discussed the massive attention her song had gained and performed some other works live as well; great voice and undoubtedly talented. You can listen to more of Kina’s music here.

Update: TechCrunch France editor Ouriel Ohayon predicted this originally.

    Virality works, always - Congratulations.

  2. Jon

Wow… that was quick… I wrote in my original comment when TC reported this how long it would be… I figured a few weeks or months… not days! I got to change my career from entrepreneur to psychic!

If Digg were smart and adventurous, they’d be the label.

If Digg were smart and adventurous, they’d be the label.

I dunno. A “smart” move might be to continue growing the site and adding useful features — focusing on what they know. Think of celebrities and their hubristic ventures into restaurants, fragrances, clothing lines and record labels because someone told them to expand their “brand”, aka, ego. With exceptions (Paul Newman’s marinara!), the end-products are pretty lame.

  5. Ouriel Ohayon

this is what i predicted on the original post. http://www.techcrunch.com/2007.....nt-1869094 i guess that was meant to happen

  6. Wade

It doesn’t hurt that girl is pretty smokin’.

  7. Duncan Riley

    Fake Steve Ballmer
she doesn’t, not one bit. Really nice personality, lovely voice on her other stuff. Sort of Norah Jones/ Lisa Novack/ Jewel area; if she cuts a deal I’d take a serious look at the record.

  8. Axel

    She should avoid record companies.

  9. other

Duncan - you wrote the article to insinuate that she got the contract because of the Digg song - she actually has a lot of other songs on the web including a DIFFERENT one that is getting lots of attention because it’s in a contest to be shown at the super bowl. THAT is probably the video that got her the record company’s attention. Not the Digg video. But oh wait, you can mention this video and turn it into a web 2.0 story! Awesome! Chalk one up for the daily post quota!

  10. Planet Malaysia

    awesome… and nice song.

  11. fritz

she has a good voice so i think the record company was smart enough to spot the potential

oh yeah and digg management was smart they would have offered her a deal too ;) the song might do wonders for the digg brand who knows???

  12. Mr. BabyMan

FYI, for sake of clarification, the show is called The Drill Down, not the Drill Team. Thanks for the mention, and great talking with you!

  13. Todd

she is definitely talented enough imo

  14. JWJ

Hahaha, this is awesome! Hope to hear the Digg song as a good quality recording if she cuts a deal. Wonder if the two in the background are gonna join her?

  15. Andrew

    she will not get signed.

  16. bla

The fact that she got a dick makes her quite unattractive to me, don’t know whether that is good for marketing…

  17. freeadlists

That’s a pretty good song and it’s catchy as hell.

    other (#9)
from what I heard of her live, the phone call came to her BECAUSE of the Digg song and attention there after. Talent helps a lot, but its us who made the difference

  19. Neurotransmisores

    It sings very well.

  20. elegance

shes even got her own playlist.

    Tahnsk your article

  22. Google Reklam

    That’s a pretty good song

  23. wiley coyote

i thought we were all trying to screw the riaa. but i guess we can’t resist the money, huh? they will put drm on the song and then none of us get to hear it unless we pay or steal it.

  24. Radar

Congrats, I hope this works well for her!

  25. Eric E

All this talk of virality and stuf makes me laugh in this case.

I think everybody is falling for ( a well executed ) marketing ploy.

This girl already sells 3 different CDs on her website : http://www.kinagrannis.com/media.php

She sells CDs on iTunes Music store….

This is not somebody coming out of nowhere….

    Eric

  26. Revilo

    I mean really…. a “record deal”… how is that a prize?

  27. Mr.Chips

This is another example of how the Internet can do it’s magic despite the lack of creativity, talent and art of the performers.

  28. Marco Bonomo

Gotta Digg, the NEW Version with subtitles and some easter eggs :-) Enjoy!

  29. Juan

I want this video to become viral… it has all the stupidity that is needed… take a look: http://www.spymac.com/details/?2319811

  30. Dog Turd Recycling

Youtube may land the record contract, not Digg you idiot.

  31. Friedbeef

Pretty damn good - love the song, and her whole act!

  32. downer

Good for her I say. She’ll get a record contract just in time for the record industry to fail while Digg works on the same.

  33. andrew c

what the fuck? i didn’t know beautiful women used digg! i wonder how she feels about all the “sexy jessica biel/alba photos” and what not… if you’re reading this, tell me! andrew -dot- capra@gmail.com

btw you have an awesome voice, but if you get signed don’t let them push you into some lame pop music girl band! if you read digg i’m sure you’re too intellectual to have your talents bastardized!

    good luck!

  34. Joseph Pally

Is this the new “techno-rap”? Sounds good. Good luck to Kina and friends.

  35. BubbleHead

Wow. The song was pure digg-bait and it worked. Digg is definitely a sad echo-chamber that isn’t worth visiting. I highly doubt women use the site since most of the stories are along the lines of “Top 10 babes wearing santa outfits” quality.

  36. bs

kina’s really nice and she puts on a great show. always a treat for those of use in so cal.

    good for her!

  37. Larry

The Ron Paul reference, “I just digg them all” was great, but she may want to change “Senator Ron Paul” to “Congressman Ron Paul”

  38. DiggthisMotherfu**er

I still miss yahoo comments board… that ruled!

  39. Marah Marie

    I always digg up Apple
    And I bury Microsoft
    When I said I was a girl
    Oh all the Diggers scoffed

That song is brilliant. Does she write her own lyrics? Amazing if she’s the Digger she claims to be - pretty and talented too, and her voice is just - so catchy.

It would make a nice theme song for Digg. The part about Ron Paul cracks me up:

And when I see those stories
    About Sen. Ron Paul
    I don’t even RTFA
    I just digg’m all

    She’s a gem… :)

  40. CAR

    Id Dig HER

  41. etavitom

that’s awesome! best of luck to her….

  42. Sarah Meyers

She blogged that the reason she is being considered for a record contract is not because of the Digg song, but because she entered a contest to be featured during the Super Bowl. She was selected as a top 10 finalist and if she gets enough votes on MySpace she wins a feature on the Super Bowl and a Record contract. She said she was posting the videos as a way to promote people voting for her on MySpace. She may or may not continue to post videos on YouTube after this month.

  43. 4LawNotes.com

    I’m not really impressed :-/

  44. SoCal

Ha, I went to school with this girl! It’s amazing how small the world can be. I also had the famous James Corbett (the accused anti-christian teacher) for AP European History.

  45. Saagar

Nice Video, well made :) Youtube and the web 2.0 would definitely prove to be a boon for all such enthusiastic talented artists..

  46. digital-lifestyles

I think it is a smart move to recognizing the talent.

  47. Mobility Now

Honestly, I really think that the girl has no future. She hit popularity by appealing to a niche, which fortunately was already quite popular. But I can guarantee you that she definately wouldn’t have lasting appeal, it would require a complete overhaul of her appearance.

  48. Fabricio Zuardi

    I second comments #8, #23 and #26.

The girl has talent, if she was releasing digital albums by herself or with a net label then we would have a better story, I don’t see how an old school record company deal is any good for artists anymore, we are not in the 70’s where selling your soul is a requirement to have an album distributed, plus, she already knows how the system works and made a hit without any help from the sinking ship folks.

  49. luke sae

she’s hot. no wonder she’s gotta deal. =D

  50. zuzz

    “Digg bait”.

  51. Dinah

She’s a final contestant in the doritos crash the superbowl contest….
one of three chosen from hundreds of entries. Vote for her today and everyday through Jan 27. See her website w/links at http://www.twoweeksforkina.com she clearly has the most talent.
