As somebody who purchased a condo unit based on the good reputation of Jim Clark (I work for a software company and my father had business dealings in Silicon Valley with Jim Clark), I have to say it's more than bad luck or timing. All of the residents are suffering because of the corners cut and misrepresentation of Hyperion. Things you couldn't imagine; for example, the condo prospectus clearly stated we would have Bell South, but Mr. Clark and Hyperion instead signed a 10 year exclusive agreement with a VOIP provider and Bell South therefore never wired the building. Today, we are stuck with bad phone service, no choice, and a contract we were never told about. There are countless other problems in the building including many things which Hyperion simply never delivered. I was not a "flipper", I bought for a long term investment and believe in 10 years we'll be ok. But a large part of why many people bought was because of the good reputation of Jim Clark. I believed that with these guys at the helm, we had less chance of the normal kind of corruption and corner cutting you see in Miami. It turned out to be exactly the opposite. Jim Clark has enough money personally to set things right in this building, but instead he pours it into a sailboat. I think it's disgusting.

Hey guys relax, he's less annoying than the real Steve Ballmer. ;-) Some of his comments are really funny. I'm a fan. Besides, banning people from commenting isn't the way these things work, it's a slippery slope.

I agree, ban the guy. He's noise. A good part of the interest in a TC story can sometimes be found in the comments when the right conditions are met; this guy is inviting irrelevancy rather than quality.

Bad timing, there is only one remedy for them to turn this into profit. Start buying right now that prices are down.

p.s. please ban fake Steve Ballmer, he's just a parasite leeching on TC traffic.

WHAT? NO, if he didn't startup the original company, he is not a founder or co-founder. JESUS. Pick up a dictionary

The NYT article would have benefited from a little balanced reporting. This isn't a story about two SV hotshots getting run out of Dodge, as much as it is written that way. The Miami real estate market is the worst of the worst in terms of bubbly real estate markets, it's a dead zone right now with 48 months of unit inventory and 30% price erosion. Contrast that to the Bay Area where sales are down over the same period last year, considerably down, but average prices actually rose.

Given how much the Miami market has cratered in the last 6 months it's safe to say that nobody is getting out without a lot of cuts and bruises. There are condo developers who are so far under water that they are boarding up unfinished developments and giving the gate keys to the bank on the way out, it's ugly.

I think the general public is still in the denial phase with regards to the housing market. Not a good time to have leveraged exposure to Miami real estate: down 12.4% year over year as of October... and likely won't bottom out until at least 2009. "Visionaries", "Speculators", "Entrepreneurs" all terms seem to depend on the amount of success in hindsight. Lots of luck and survivorship bias involved...

"Mo' Money, Mo' Problems" ;-) He took a gamble and although he hasn't lost yet, he is growing a few more white hairs on his head as a result. That being said, real estate has ups and downs, right now it's down... if he can "live" long enough to see the upswing... then he will be fine.

I'm with John McCrea. But I do believe Jim kinda lost his roots . . . instead of leading revolutions (SGI, Netscape), he seemed to be looking to ride waves (shutterfly, WebMD) . . . a subtle but important difference.

Either way, the man has done more than I could ever hope to accomplish. No hating please.

Actually, Jermoluk never had the "touch" for real estate.

I believe it was him who paid $5.7M+ for a house in atherton in 2000, and a year later unloaded the same house for $3M.

You can say a lot of things about Jim and Tom, but with respect to what they did in Silicon Valley, it was certainly not just a case of them being speculators. Jim was a visionary, who made interactive 3D a reality through the Geometry Engine chip that gave rise to Silcon Graphics, and which would revolutionize video games. (Remember the Nintendo 64? A tiny SGI machine, designed on SGI's campus back in the mid-'90's.) And Jim played a non-trivial role in the emergence of the Web, when he teamed up with Marc Andreessen to form Netscape. The fact that both companies are now remembered as much for their eventual screw-ups and decline does not detract from the invention and entrepreneurship that defines their contribution the industry. (Man, I still have to get around to writing my book on the lessons to be learned from SGI's rise and fall.)

The Miami condo market has something like 5 years of inventory. Its unlikely anyone will be doing new development in Miami anytime soon. They will likely take a big hit to their net worth here and move on. People are probably suing just to get out of their money losing contracts on their condos.

I guess I can understand his move into real estate considering his success with @Home was purely based on the bubble in the market and NOT on any record of accomplishment. His move into HARD goods makes sense and so does his failure (again).

Jim Clark was not a founder of WebMD, he was the founder of Healtheon who later acquired WebMD.
