Events based social network Going.com have launched their 3.0 version with several new features.
Central to Going.com 3.0 is a new events and people recommendation engine that allows users to discover events and people in their area. The new features takes Going.com’s event focused social networking service to nearly a dating service. Where as before Going.com recommended events and tied together friends, the new version recommends new friends based on a users event history. Essentially it’s pattern based matching combined with Going.com’s event engine. For example if you’ve been to three or more events in the one city, and someone else has as well, they may recommend that person as a friend match.
In related news, Going.com’s ticket sales (launched in November) are going from strength to strength. From their initial launch selling Moby tickets they will be selling tickets to Mos Def, Diplo, Z-Trip, MF Doom, Lyrics Born and Goapele in the coming weeks.
Any idea if we have something similar to going.com in opensource?

It’s amazing how going.com is copying everything from others. Israeli based startup wannago.com (formerly MatchActivity) was the first and developed a great site without $5 million investment.
you should be able to achieve all of this functionality with drupal.org – or out of the box with some heavy ass tweaking, you could include event calls into elgg.org (and it would feel just like going.com out of the box, that’s what i meant)

Very similar to Meetup.com, except Meetup I thing charges nominal amount for every meeting that you organize.

Ballu: I’ve been using Meetup since I coordinated Dean meetups in 2003. It’s very different from Going.
Meetup is meant as a tool to organize groups of people with recurring meetings about specific topics. There’s a monthly fee for the group organizer (I pay $9/month but I think I’m getting a special low rate for having been an early adopter), none for the participants. You join Meetup “groups” which are interesections of locations and global topics (so, for example, one global topic may be “Buffy” and you may live in Longmont, CO, so you could join the Buffy Meetup Group of Longmont, etc.) The organizer finds a venue and manages when their monthly or weekly meeting is (it can be on different schedules, but Meetup is geared mainly towards monthly/weekly), members of the group are reminded of each meeting and RSVP online.
Going.com is, at first, an events listing site: It has whatever happens to be going on in the metro area, be it concerts, dances, talks, festivals, club nights, parades, museum exhibits, political rallies, talks, plays … many people use Going without creating profiles at first, just as a way of browsing event listings and finding things they want to go to. For those who do join, it’s not primarily structured around groups or recurring topic-oriented meetings; any member can RSVP to any event, and any member can post events if they want. The social features are “looser” and more network-style than Meetup, in that you browse all that’s available, see profiles of other people going to an event you’re interested in, etc. Unlike Meetup where you must first “join” a specific topic (because you know you want to go to its meetings), Going is about discovering what you might want to go to (and, if you wish, other people who want to go to the same kinds of things as you do).
Lee: Huh, I’d never heard of wannago.com, so I just tried it out. “No events found near Boston”. Hmm. I’m not sure what it’s meant to be, but it’s clearly not the same thing as Going.com.

It’s a business/social networking tool for arranging off-line meetings with new people. Sort of like Meetup/Upcoming in that your invite is public; sort of like Evite/Socializer in that you decide who will attend your meeting.
You can meet new people using the following steps:
(1) Post a Public Invite describing the type of people you want to meet.
(2) You’ll be notified by email if someone accepts your Invite.
(3) Approve or decline the acceptance – it’s entirely your decision. The other person will be notified of your decision. If you approve, the meeting is confirmed! You can communicate with the other person using our double-blind messaging system.
(4) You can also meet new people by searching the Public Invites posted on our site for meetings that interest you. Accept an Invite and see what happens!
