IAC - Atlas (old Accipiter)
AOL - AdTech
Viacom - Atlas (old Accipiter)

That is 3 big Publisher clients that Doubleclick has lost this year...

1. Does that mean that the Google-DC deal will go through with ease?
2. Are big media companies reacting to the Google deal?
3. Is this shaping up to be a big Microsoft-Google Battle in 2008?
4. Where's Jerry in all this, waiting to be acquired by Bill or Sergey/Larry???

Michael I need some expert opinions on this...

"I’m a publisher and I get nothing from CPM networks"

The deal is not exactly for an adsense platform so they aren't targetting publishers.

Not that I like ads but to dismiss advertising because we developers have become so immune to it barely does anything to giants like viacom and microsoft.

As Viacom's portfolio shows, they run media sites - mtv and such, where people look at the banners and viacom runs a much wider network of billboards, tv ads and other media that Microsoft can tap into (obviously to battle google going into the phone market and current print ads)

The deal?
I could care less. The way I see it, with all these ad networks partnering up, something is bound to go down and there will obviously be a decent battle between Google and MS and its people. I'm looking forward to that for sure.

How it'll turn out, remains hard to say.

I wonder if/how this looming giant deal will affect independent developers. It's getting so indie game development is as tough, if not tougher, than indie film-making.

What a goofy announcement- impossible to track or predict the numbers they announce, the banner ad world is in for a major crash as virtually every recent usability study shows that banners are now invisible (if you asked me to name your top three advertisers on TC, I couldn't and I read it everyday), Microsoft as a brand is so ubiquitous that it is even more invisible, etc.
I'm a writer and I'm using Google docs because it is much simpler than Word. I'm an advertiser and I use AdWords because it is much simpler and more measurable than display.
I'm a publisher and I get nothing from CPM networks, a few cents per thousand.
These people are completely out of the loop and they are the biggest players out there. Time to doubledown on my Goog stock....

"where is that beerco Search software?"

BeerCo Software Canada is deadpool. There are contracts until June then it's done.
The search is coming with me. The search is the only good thing about BeerCo Software, and it must be separated from the dead part in order to survive.

"@2 Chris R ; too high to make your ‘name’ link work?"
Yeah, I am so high that editors from TC are emailing me asking me if I am high. I am SOOOO high right now. High like a kite. No, higher than a kite. And I am snorting off of hookers' bellies just like Doogie Houser MD in Harold in Kumar go to WhiteCastle. Wait one is pulling on my hair(smack). Ok, she's off me now. (smack, smack, back off)

So what was I saying. Yeah, this deal between MS V is nothing really surprising to me as we see MS make it's dramatic move away from less profitable direct to market sales and towards the more profitable, forecastable and stable B2B deals. That's what MS has been doing these past 2 years. Shifting business away from retail and towards B2B for security purposes as it's stronghold on Win and Office in the retail space start to decline.

@2 Chris R ; too high to make your 'name' link work?

Also man please! ; having a blog like yours / is worse than not having a blog at all...

** actual comment **

Its kind of funny, that we can pay per click / (very focused and controlled advertising) but big companies are still doing package trade deals.... each one throws in as much ''fat'' into the deal as possible. No-one is looking out for anyone but them selves in these type deals (most of the time)

p.s. HEY CHRIS!? ; where is that beerco Search software? heh, good luck in america

Viacom and Microsoft seem like a great fit. I wouldn't be surprised if this works out better than people might think.

"What most Hollywood types tend to ignore is that in videogames, the stars are the players themselves."

Er, yes and no. In many games, the lead character - your character - is little more than an empty shell who glides through the game killing people. Half-Life's Gordon Freeman, Bioshock's Jack, Western RPGs' customisable lead characters, etc - it's funny how Gordon Freeman in particular has become an instantly recognisable and memorable character, despite the fact that you only ever see his face on box art (in the dystopic future of a conquered Earth, the aliens have apparently destroyed all the mirrors).

There are hundreds of games with strong lead characters, though. Oddly a lot of the obvious ones are Eastern - Final Fantasy's leads, Metal Gear's Solid Snake, etc. Max Payne and the Prince of Persia are some Western ones that spring to mind - all with strong personalities and good lines that don't detract from the experience.

Which sort of lead character is better probably depends on the game. Though I've certainly played quite a few where I wish the lead character was of the silent category. When characters spout clichéd drivel it's bad, but when it appears to be coming from your own mouth it's even worse.

The point of all this is that computer games are a completely different experience from film. Before creating a lead character, you have to decide whether you even want him to be a character. Not to mention the problem with love interests - at what points they accompany the character, to what extent they fight alongside him, etc. A good example of how not to do it was Dark Messiah of Might & Magic - you say goodbye to the love interest at the entrance to the final level, spend an hour scrambling down through a necropolis, solving puzzles and fighting tooth and claw past horrible monsters, and when you get to the bottom she pops out of another corridor without a scratch. Hi there, nice to see you again, why the f*** didn't you show me the way you went?

For all I know Jerry Bruckheimer may be very good at producing computer games, but if he is he'll be a very versatile man - it won't have anything to do with his experience in films.

"Media companies love doing complicated deals. They used to call it synapse"

You know that's very interesting. If I wasn't so gosh darn high right now I could make some kind of thoughtful remark on this otherwise uneventful deal. Ooops, I just dropped my bowl in the sofa cushions. I have to go dig it out.

"What most Hollywood types tend to ignore is that in videogames, the stars are the players themselves"

So true yet so overlooked. I dont want to play as Brad Pitt or Tom Cruse (Crazy Guy on the Couch, out for PS3 this summer?), i want to tear it up myself, hence why they always have the "Player Name" field.
