Definition Of A Successful PR Stunt
by Michael Arrington on December 19, 2007

Yesterday Meebo and SpeedDate teamed up with a number of bloggers to have a public speed dating session. The results speak for themselves - solid gold content. Somebody give the marketing team a big year end bonus.

In my opinion, Wired’s Aaron Rowe stole the show.

nope. total cost = $0. It’s all upside. And I bet everyone who participated blogs about it. Speed Date is a big winner.

Well…it WILL draw new users. Damn…using iJustine was a golden idea!

How about picking some attractive women?

nice tempo and cool slant!

favorite line”

…..” I dripped curry on my keyboard……”

At face value I’d call this stupid and a waste of time, but when you look at it in a marketing stand point, I’d call it a definite success.

That face made me afraid to press play!

Good marketing if your target audience is DORKS!

No wonder it worked for Mikey.

That face is from the promotional poster for The Grudge. I’m pretty sure.

Yeah that is the best way to sell your web service, not by showing the site, but rather showing the human element it invokes.

Has worked well for us and landed us in French publications to Engadget :)

Who are you guys talking about? Justine is a babe!

How is it already being deemed successful? I would say the jury is still out

Great stunt….

I was supposed to be in this but didn’t get my webcam … I’m now pissed … this was a great video

We’ll have to do another one, Nick. :)

Definitely let me know about the next one Danny ;)

You should publish all videos, cant stop wondering them…

wondering how many people you can date on the site?

I nominated Aaron Rowe for a Crunchie. Did he win??

Is Sarah Meyers stoned?

So…who’s gonna make more money out of this PR exercise?

or does making money not matter anymore!?!?

Michael how come Natali Del Conte doesn’t blog for you in your house anymore??? What’s wrong man? Everything OK? Oh man she’s a hottie.

And to think, I skipped this to code some PHP for Mike. I’ve got to rethink my priorities.

C’mon, nobody knows who the f these people are outside super nerds. Case in point, this “successful PR stunt” has only received 3,344 views after being up for 8 days.

On a side note, I am a super nerd and liked it.

@27: YouTube counters are frequently broken it seems. For instance… the video still has 3,344 views, even though I watched it twice. ;)

Aaron Rowe, if you’re ever in Amsterdam, drop me an e-mail, or a Tweet or whatever, let’s have a curry and flip through old Mondo 2000’s.

@14 Nick Volk

“How is it already being deemed successful? I would say the jury is still out”

Well, it’s got coverage on Techcrunch already which I’d say is quite a coup.

Well, there goes another idea I was planning on.. :)

a) They did this for FREE? OMbeepG.
b) I kept imagining what iJustine woud look like w/o makeup…

scnr

I still prefer my product.

everyone is talking over one another, i could barely make it out. PR stunt that needs work.

not sure what the point is. i can’t even remember the products or services they are trying to promote.

outside of geekdom, no value. but that’s true of 90% of the stuff covered on a tech blog.

Nah, it was funny and thus engaging.

BTW - Josh, your product, if it is real and actually works, looks a lot more stalky and weird.

Seesmic needs to do this sort of thing - this is valuable.

just don’t see how getting video of a bunch of technology bloggers is going to translate into real users. do you really think the world outside of silicon valley even knows who aaron rowe actually is??

Video has already been taken down it seems.

Ok, forget that last comment. My bad.

Agree with technogeek - last thing a dating site needs is more tech dudes in the sausage fest which is currently SpeedD. you want to see smart, check out what WooMe is doing, getting play on female geared mass media, FOX’s nationally syndicated morning show:

..there should be an event for ‘Speed-Teasing.’ those with the highest ratings would get a larger cut of ad revenue :-)

Stunts are for Evil Kneival - may he rest in peace. These folks took a smart strategic approach to this PR “event.” Congrats to them.

Thanks Michael, Aaron, Debbie, and Josh,

Thanks for the kind words!

The whole event made me feel like I was a teenager messing around in AOL chat rooms, but the aftermath really felt like high school all over again.

The real date that iJustine mentions at the end of the video would have been with me. I would have picked her up directly after flying in to Burbank Airport on Thursday night. That morning, I checked with her to make sure we were still on. She said yes. Just before taking off from Oakland, she confirmed our plans again.

She stood me up at the last minute with the excuse that her manager was brining her to a dinner that might be important for her career. It turns out that she was screwing around on facebook the whole time.

The worst part: I rented a car to pick her up instead of catching a ride home from the airport with a friend.

Justine may not be from Los Angeles, but she already has a Hollywood personality.

Hugs and Kisses
Aaron
