Trying my luck. I need this to convince my boss that our industry (Media) needs to use IT more efficiently in Asia. Our work processing methods are just so backward sometimes that pulling information is a nightmare.

I'd like a copy of the Nick Carr book for several reasons....

First, being a teacher, everyone in the tech world thinks that teachers are so behind the times as far as tech goes...

Second, I'd actually read it and try to implement some of the ideas and maybe even blog on a few of them. (edtechvalley.blogspot.com)

Third, I'm doing a shameless plug to try and drive hits to my blog because I leave a comment on Tech Crunch.

Four, Michael Arrington is god! Take it from "The Bubble" video and Lane Hartwell is a pussy! Fair use is fair use. That is what I have to teach the kids these days. (Second shameless plug.... globalcom.wetpaint.com)

This is my anti-request for a copy.
I shouldn't receive a copy because I would actually read the book. Then if I liked what the book had to say, I might discuss it with various enterprise clients. Those clients in turn possibly would not only buy the book but also could buy it for the individuals in their IT department. All of this book buying would suddenly mushroom into enormous book royalty checks for Nick Carr. Carr, being unable to contain his glee at finally being able to shop without using food stamps, would in turn purchase a home twice the size of Michael's, and post photos of it on his RoughType blog just to annoy Michael. This in turn of course would lead to yet another flame war skirmish in the blogsphere, thus wasting millions of potentially productive hours of blog readers that could have been devoted to ending global warming.
So, yes you can send me a copy but if the polar ice caps totally melt, don't say that you weren't warned in advance.

Well I was going to wait for the movie, but if this Nick fella can tell me how all this is going to shake out, then I'm willing to read about it first. After all, keeping up on virtual reality is better than TV, which is better than no reality at all. In the end though, I'd just like the man's autograph.

hi Micheal,

You´ll definitely want to send one of those copies because:
- This is you chance to send something to Brasil;
- If are so kind to send me a copy I promise you´ll be the first one to get the press release of our company (you´ll have to be patient of about six months);
- I´ll write a neat post about the book that you can put on techcrunch (isn´t it great that other people actually offer to do your work for you ... for free!).

Hope to hear from you.
All the best ... straight from Brasil,

Luca

If it is not too late to enter:

Mr. Carr has a neat "hook" as a columnist: (1) He seems to more or less "get" a lot of the nature of computing tech at the business level -- rather remarkably better than most people in similar professions -- so he rarely says anything that sounds stupid to a good (and seasoned) software engineer. (2) He just a golden boy show-off when it comes to elaborating basic MBA / microeconomics / marketing stuff -- he's stand-outishly not idiotic about business, too. (3) He's got a good "voice" that manages to be conservative in ideas without being overly conservative in social norms. More software professionals should read him with the thought in mind that he comes with a pretty useful perspective.

Hi Mike,

I am your avid reader from Krakow, Poland. I am a serial entrepreneur who works with some of the best technology companies in Eastern Europe - and I strongly believe that quite a few big ideas in software as a service will come out of this part of the world. Why? Because they missed out // could not afford the high prices of stand alone enterprise software packages and were forced to innovate ....
This innovation bears fruit ..... Skype was first (made by guys in Estonia - a small country which like the whole region suffered from VERY high international call charges ....).
I would love to get the Nick's book to share with like minded guys in Poland - I do believe that computing services will become a utility, affordable and available to everybody everywhere.

Hi Mike,
What a remarkable way to generate some buzz.... Question is: how much of this turns into real orders for "The Big Switch"?

Actually, there is a way to measure -- the sales rank chart for this book at Charteous: http://charteo.us/amzn/items/0393062287 . I see a big bump today, from approx. 40,000 to approx. 1600.

As per Zipf's law, the sale rank is inversely proportional to sales volume. So, this bump should mean significant no. of new orders.

I'm definitely interested in reading this book - I'm interested in rewiring the health education and public health world with technology and social media. This would be wonderful to add to my library and continue my research/work. Thanks TC!

Long Time Reader - First Time Commentor

I read the "smug" link from the first paragraph. I don't know this Nick guy from Adam. Amusing post, though. Then, after only two mild admonitions from readers, he starts backing up. I could almost hear the alarm. Figured they were here to pick up my trash. I thought the cool thing about these blogs was the Old West style verbal gun-fights in the virtual streets. Where's the fun in posting pithy/witty/ironic observational prose if you're going to turn tail at the first (or second) sign of dissent? I don't know...send me the book if you want. I might read it. If I disagree, will they pull it off the market?

While I don't agree with everything Nick Carr says I find his writing to be top class. I also have respect for the guy because he writes what he feels, which is something I think all of us could use a little work on.

Lately I've been reading everything I can get my hands on related to blogging, podcasting, and Web 2.0. This has resulted in me starting my own blog, back in September. The first month was hard because I didn't have any readers but now that a few people have had the chance to hear about it I'm beginning to have quite a few readers on a daily bases.

What I love most about blogging, podcasting, lifecasting, and new media in general, is the fact that it's in the hands of the people. For Instance, Now more than ever people like me and you are able to put our thought, feelings, opinions and what every else we want, out there to the rest of the world. We are experiencing something that no other generation has had the chance to experience.

I honestly feel that it's changing our lives a little at a time, whether you think the change is good or not is up for debate. But I'm an eternal optimist so I can't help but feel like it's for the better.

I would like this book as it is my job within our company to keep up with the very latest in thinking on the internet and where it is heading in the future and I think this book will help me to do that.

Our company, for the last several years, has been working, in stealth, on a multi-media oriented operating system which we hope and expect will change the web for the better. We have new technology by the bucketful and are just getting to the patent application stage.

2008 is going to be our year to show what we've got. The book, I think, will help me to see where our OS will fit in.

Thank you

I am retiring from active military service after twenty-five years in the Army. The last twelve years I have been an “Information Systems Officer” supporting a great number of systems and projects (currently I am working on the largest ERP project in IT history!).

As I move into the “civilian” IT world I believe that this book may allow me to be more effective at any future job by providing me a different perspective on new IT. Plus, how else would I ever get a signed copy?? LOL

As a college professor, there are two reasons why I should be the proud recipient of a signed copy of Dr. Carr's book.

1) I make every attempt to incorporate the latest information into the Management Information Systems classes I teach. Reading the "The Big Switch" would allow me to be better informed and to pass that knowledge along to my students thus benefiting them as well.

2.) I am too cheap to purchase my own books.

The reason I feel I deserve a signed copy of "The Big Switch" is no reason at all. It would be cool to have signed copy of book that hasn't been released yet, and how cool is that. Ok, I lied.
Thanks

Thanks for your offer ! If you fancy sending the book to France :)

I like and enjoy reading Carr's blog posts. I don't agree him for everything of course, but Carr's thoughts deserve to make us think over at the technologies place from a human, social & individual perspective. The questions he brings help to think beyond, his answers express his point of view, which is as respectable as any others. The point when reading Rough Type blog (or any others same category) is more the generated questions and debate. I liked for example the last bunch of posts about Enterprise software sexiness, that brings us indirectly to the user position and incoming power in the enterprise information definition and control.
One of the IT doesn't matter point - IT doesn't make the difference, people make the difference - , which is several years old now, is still up to date and I often remain it (in my job) to clients before starting complex ERP-like system integration which are often too tech focus.

And as you said, Nicholas Carr's written style is impressive, which is a good source (as Techcrunch :)) for guys like me who are not natural English speaker !

Looking forward reading the big switch book !

Thanks a lot
