first read the blog entry on Sitepoint - replied there & came here to read more about Google’s knol step. First time when I saw knol I was happy to see that there is one more resource to share information on internet ! Now I am amazed to see logic behind this , still everybody here is to make money & do business - One word not trying to go Anti but Everything is fair in Business.

If MSN, Yahoo or someone who is against this strategy - they are now warned & at the end of the day last audience will get the BEST !

Knol is currently a rubbish service. Many of the articles are plagiarised, often from Wikipedia, and many others are simply ads for companies.

Google ought to be able to flag up if an article is a flagrant copy of content already on the web. They've already got the tech to spot duplicate online content.

The quality control issue is more difficult to solve because it relies on people, not algorithms. Without a committed community such as Wikipedia's, Knol will quickly be over-run with junk and be worthless. And nothing I've seen will convince Wikipedia's users to jump ship.

Google have some great ideas but not always the commitment to see them through to completion.

since knol results will be at the top, there will be a lot of knols with the sole purpose of advertising. after a few years, most knols will be advertisements. this will take advertising to a whole new level, possibly increasing other forms of advertising? if this happens, most google results will be cheap advertisements and people will switch to other search engines like yahoo or msn, I would

Actually, "knol" was just the codename for this project.

According to some sources, the actual name is "Unipedia"

Sounds like a better name than "knol".

I quite like the idea that Unipedia will share revenue of any ads with the authors.

Angel, what "limited views" and "opinions" are you referring to? That the 1908 Tunguska impact event was caused by antimatter and not a meteorite? Or perhaps the view that the holocaust never really happened? Or that the moon landings were faked?

Maybe you forget that an encyclopedia must be objective, factual and unemotional. In cases where facts are disputed, Occam's razor is applied. Wikipedia is remarkably objective and neutral thanks to the many volunteers who give their time to protect its content from trolls, crackpots and magical thinkers.

Who knows, maybe some good will come of Knol. Its "feature" of not being able to modify content might lure the politicisers away from Wikipedia and thereby increase its signal to noise ratio.

Kind Regards,
Kevin.

I am quite ready for an alternative to Wikipedia (even considering looking into ways to block it). It's convenient, but its massive hypocrisy -- the disconnect between its professed principles and the way it actually works -- causes me to distrust anything I find there. Three cheers for personal responsibility -- "Knol" style.

There is a need for Knol. Wikipedia is held hostage by the limited views and opinions of a conservative select few. Fresh, novel insights and other true aspects relating to many other subject are often totally excluded.
