[...] This gap could mean one of two things. Either YouTube is unable to make money from a large portion of its user-generated video inventory (advertisers want to stick to the home page and the safety of their own channels). Or YouTube just hasn’t turned on the money-gushing hose yet. It has built an increasingly unassailable market dominance under the shelter of Google’s wing without the need to maximize revenues. That attitude, though, is obviously changing, with YouTube now pushing AdSense for video and spreading that wealth with more content partners. [...]

I wonder if this is a way to get more content for Google Video Units. I've been using the Video Units on a few sites and the same few videos keep showing up.

This could really change the playing field for current TV and Internet Media.
If I could make mad money using Google Adsense and already tap the userbase, why would a real production company product real good content made for youtube?
Do you see like Jerry Bruckheimer Films producing a 2-3 mintue clip for youtube and make madd adsense money?
I guess this is why the writers on strike!! They know that this could happen and the writers will loose money. Its good that they did not take the $103 some million dollar deal!

It's difficult for a company to comply with the laws of 169 different countries, many of which will have different laws, or laws that don't have any precedent for this kind of business, maybe even laws which ban this who knows. Moreover, they would have to customize the copy, options, payment, etc on the website for pretty much every different country's laws.

Opening this up to different countries isn't a flick of the switch, unfortunately. That's because it involves Money. Hopefully, with more trade and travel and Internet communication, borders will disappear. They haven't yet.

They start with the US and Canada because, frankly, it's their largest markets.

Yes, Google has many lawyers and a I'm sure they're working on it. I'm sure they could have waited until longer to launch this if they wanted to have more countries involved in this launch. But that would probably be deadweight loss. US and Canada systems are ready, they can begin testing the system. Some people can start getting value immediately. As more systems are worked out, more opportunities will become available for individuals in other countries. Countries in Europe are probably next.

Could it be that the US/Canada restriction is due to tax issues?!? I would guess that this has to be reported to the IRS as income after a certain amount ($600?!?).

Finally, somebody with some major draw is understanding the value of its users. The users do all the work and the site makes all the money. It's only natural to share with the users instead of treating us like slaves. Looks like YouTube will be around for a long time because they understand who they need to continue being the leader in this segment. Google is really growing on me more and more.

This is pretty interesting. It continues the trend of amateurs breaking into established businesses via alternative paths. Bloggers broke into the media ranks with their own organic growth, and the top ones make good money from ads. Most bloggers don't get the level of ad monetization to quit their day jobs. But the opportunity is there for anyone. No longer restricted to getting a job with one of the decades-old media companies.

Hell, even American Idol is an example of this. Bypass the normal L.A. or Nashville scenes to get your break - and let America watch you.

I love the chance for would-be movie/TV producers to bypass the normal Hollywood infrastructure, become successful virally and make some money at it. If you've got talent, you should be rewarded for it. Not everyone will, but at least you've got an open opportunity.

Ahhh, this is very unusual, if they really want to share the wealth to everybody, then why limiting the target to us and canada? I'm sure a lot internet users nowadays are thinking of rewarding their efforts at the same time enjoying what they're doing.

Oh this is good news. It's my new business model lol.... 300,000 views per month and 2 million views already in the bag -- Interesting to see what type of revenue (if any) can be made.
