The author should try Frys Electronics, they consider very customer a criminal that is trying to shop lift from them and inflict as much pain and insults as they can when you try to return something. Make CompUSA seem like a nice place to have shopped.

CompUSA didn't have much going for it as far as I can remember. The low profit margins on run of the mill PCs spurred the mindset of "stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap." There's no more painful death than low margins, unhappy employees, poor and ugly layout and iron-fisted management. As a former employee, it was hell to work there.

i would like to say that i am a current employee at compusa. i am not incompetent or retarded for that matter, but that is not to say that most of the people I work with are. I had a sales associate ask me if there was such thing as XD CARDS...are you effin kidding me! I have always wondered how the company can hire the most unintelligent of people.

Back in the 90's CompUSA was a great store. It was publically owned and the people they hired knew what they were doing and were all certified in multiple things, not a mere A+ certification. However, once the store went private [bought out by the infamous Carlos Slim] the company went south. The man is a complete moron and he drove the company DIRECTLY into the ground.

In regards to the TAP. I refuse to sell it [the replacement plans]. On certain items, however, I would recommend it. These were the items that I, myself would in fact purchase replacement plans on if I was the customer. Then when my "TAP NUMBERS" weren't atleast, oh i don't know, some ridiculous number like 50 a day [i dont think we get that many people in our store within 6 hours ha ha], i was immediatly scrutinized. My job was threatened and I was basically reprimanded while at my customer service counter in front of other customers and employees. Because there wasn't a more professional way to handle it...

Another issue, those bastards. I was working full time hours for ten months, and then I come to find that I wasn't in the books as a full time employee. So, believing that this was an error and would immediatly be corrected when brought to their attention, I informed my immediate manager and the general manager for that matter. Their reply "We'll talk when you can get your TAP numbers up" those mother effin a-holes!

So, here I am, still working for the most incompetent company that ever existed. And I am ashamed to have to admit that. The only reason I am still employed here is because I'm a responisble 20 year old, who will not quit without finding another job.

Just want to add my 2 cents that CompUSA was once a good store, but went gradually year after year. I would mark the turned tide when they instituted the 15% restocking fee. From that point on it was down hill. For those wondering why a restocking fee is bad, realize the question belies that you are NOT a true *computer* geek. 15% restocking fees are what shady online retailers used as a ploy to increase or *create* profit. In the old days, often if you made a purchase from a shady dealer you would receive either a defective merchandise or the wrong merchandise PURPOSELY, in any event you would be COMPELLED to pay a 15% restocking fee. This is documented stuff. At the time, the *computer geek* community reccommended NOT to buy from merchants with such a policy---then CompUSA goes an implements the same policy. CompUSA's execs were (and remained) clearly out of touch with their *core* customers.

@ Makinamotze,

Sir, you may indeed be a relatively nice person, but the problem with your former employer is, indeed, the salespeople were relative idiots! Please note the context----a COMPUTER store! If one works in a computer store, one s/b *more* than PC literate. Unfortunately, as the posters above attest, the overwhelming majority of CompUSA employees were NOT PC literate. I would wager that the majority NEVER ever built a PC before in their lives. Personally, I expect to go into a *computer* store and have the people working there know, at least, as much as I do about computers; and frankly, given their daily work experience to know more about what's *current* than us non-computer working stiffs.

The fact that YOU didn't know the latest PC games and latest console systems----and, one could extrapolate that to CPUs, GPUs, MBs, Memmory Modules, etc.-----is PRECISELY why your employer is out of business.

For example, I want to know FROM YOU, what is the best *overclocking*CPU for my budget? I want to know what are the *quirky* differences between brand A CD-ROM and brand B. I want to know which CDs work best for my brand of CD-ROM. The fact that you don't know this stuff, means **I** s/b putting on the red shirt and YOU s/b paying ME!

Sorry, no, I have no desire to wait a half hour (or more) for the lone resident expert. Who, will turn out to know LESS than I do.

****

The above, and the fact that CompUSA had a poor selection. Oh yes, you could get a brand name HD (with a good rebate price); and yes, you could purchase an OVERPRICED CPU, but beyond that there was little. Want a power supply---Antec was the only semi-respectable choice. The other brands were true crap. Which was the case for virtually everything else. Want a Plextor CD-ROM or DVD player? Not found at CompUSA. Want **QUALITY*** memory? Not to be found--until recent years when Corsair started to sell in the box stores and Kingston started to make a quality module.

CompUSA simply failed to focus upon and take of its *core* customer---Computer Geeks!

For those of you who want to find a *true* computer store, the opposite of all the above and more, I suggest you try **MicroCenter**. A true geek store box store----in fact the ONLY one still doing business that I know of. Hopefully, there's a store near you. It's worth at least a half hour of driving time.

http://www.microcenter.com/at_the_stores/index.html

Here you'll find adults who actually do know computers. An entire store full of geeks! Not counting the cashiers :) The store isn't *pretty*, the people may be a bit scruffy, but they know their stuff; and you won't be assaulted by TVs, Stereos, Consoles with the volume blasting the moment you walk thru the doors. You also won't be scrutinized by beefy men in Yellow shirts demanding you PROVE you paid for the stuff in your bag---ala Best Buy!

Plus, there's no RESTOCKING FEE!

Finally. In my experience, CompUSA was one of the worst retailers ever. I totally was screwed way back in 1995. I needed a new hard drive. An associate provided me his recommendation for my system configuration. I paid to have CompUSA to install. I go to pickup the computer and the employee tells me that they installed the new hard drive but it didn't work with my system so they uninstalled it and I have to refund the hard drive. Fine...did that.. then he told me that I had to pay for the installation and removal charges for their technical services or they wouldn't return my computer to me. I wrote letters to the store manager...denied...to the company headquarters..denied...to the VP of Customer Satisfaction (joke?)...and denied. I finally took the issue to the Better Business Bureau, State Attorney General and contacted an attorney friend. The State Attorney General had received numerous complaints and stepped into the matter. Nearly six months later...I received a full refund. I never shopped there again...ever.

As bad as CompUSA may have been, Best Buy is and continues to be worse. So much so that I would often drive the extra 15 minutes each way to go to CompUSA.

Imagine if you were an inferior being, such as this commenter from Brazil. You could not get anything through eBay, neither ANY of the online stores (Apple, BHPhoto, etcetera). The stuff being sold in Brazil is outrageously expensive (an iPod 160GB is around USD1000, a Sony PS3 also around USD1000; a macbook pro over USD5000; if you don`t believe this check out www.fnac.com.br).

So I get my yearly tech fix by visiting the US and leaving a small fortune. CompUSA will be missed, enormously. If the other big retailers go, that will be a tragedy.

Personally I've always found that the sales people at CompUSA were equally incompetent to those who work at Best But and Circuit City (well maybe not as bad as Circuit City but that's a pretty high bar of incompetence to compete with). My problem was with there ability to ignore any reasonable pricing policy. Occasionally I'd go in to glance at there sales and clearance, and eventually gave up after going in to see a big "laptop clearance" only to find a bunch of outdated laptops marked down no more then $25. I glanced at the video games only to find a selection of old games being charged at least MSRP, although they had Brain Age on sale for $25 even though MSRP is $19.99. For a store that trys to cater to techies, this kind of shoddy pricing practice was idiotic, and thus I gave up on them forever. Adios

WAHOOOOO GOOD RIDDANCE!!! here is the quick and dirty version of my story and i mean QUICK and DIRTY...my dad bought me a toshiba satelite laptop from them...within 6 months i had issues, it was noisey and would shut off randomly all the time...this went on for 2.5 years....i called, i went in there, i argued, i called management, i spoke with management, i talked to the Better Business Bureau, the highest up I could go within compusa, etc---NOTHING. they replaced the hard drive 3 times (one time they took it out of their store's inventory and so it didnt count towards a lemon), they replaced the fan 2x, the LCD, the Batter 2x, the DC+ or something and a few other parts including the friggin Motherboard. yet they would still NOT give me a damn new computer or consider it a lemon...my dad who was a lawyer told me in secrecy at the time that he was on the case that was people vs compusa and toshiba for neglecting to abide by the warrenty and other things...but he was unfortuantly fighting FOR compusa/toshiba even though he knew they should lose...some of the techies were bastards but it wasnt until like a month before my 3 yr warrenty was up when the GM of the FFX store was like "this is BS, this girl NEEDS a new computer, give her one" and people still refused and after the motherboard was replaced and it still shutdown, they gave me a piece of crap replacement the last day of my warrenty! I should get some reimbursement in addition to the crappy computer just for my time and aggrevation and my at-the-time ill father's time and aggrevation too.

I for one will miss CompUSA, or at least what it used to be when it entirely focused on computers and accessories whatnot. As a kid there was always something magical about going to a store with all this computer equipment (and none of the other consumer electronics stuff), and of course all these colorful and over-sized game boxes that used to be proudly displayed on shelf-stores. In the late nineties, during my college days, I even worked for a couple of years over at Computer City, which was later acquired by CompUSA and had a good time while working with some really great people that loved computer hardware. For all I know I probably ended up being a chip designer because I spent all this time hanging around computer stores, of which there a fewer and fewer these days when big box-retailers are discounted. And as stated before, when you cherry-picked you could always find some amazing deals over at CompUSA, as well as an on-line rebate submission system which I never had a problem with. Good luck to all the CompUSA employees that will need to find new jobs.

For any one who has regularly visited all of the major electronics stores you would see that CompUSA wasn't all bad. There are bad seeds in every location. Fry's has to be by far the worst when it comes to returns and commission based money motivated bias. Circuit City has so few employees these days that it is nearly impossible to get help unless you know somebody. Best Buy takes so much pride in their products and abilities that they often come across as arrogant and obnoxious. There are flaws in everyone's business practices and most of the damaging mistakes are on the corporate level. They all have their faults. Your local regional chains are the way to go. Prices are competitive, staff are well trained and service is personal. As an electronics rep, I have relationships with many levels of most retail chains and the happiest employees as well as the long time career associates reside in the smaller regional retail chains. This is what I had hoped would become of CompUSA but no such luck. Give your local regional chain a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.

egregious story, you say...? i have so many that would scare the crap out of you. i worked for comp for more than 5 years in high school and college (only job i could get back then paying more than $10/hr or i would have quit sooner), and i would gladly dance on the ashes of its smoldering remains. the store i worked at closed here in kansas city about 6 months ago... i was ecstatic. god, they sucked so bad. and the the people i worked with... don't even get me started.

Yes, the prices at CompUSA were high; but you could walk into a CompUSA and buy most any peice of hardware you needed for a computer. In addition to the computer parts, most all the employees I spoke to knew there was more than one operating system being used in the world (MS). I tried to buy a scanner in Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, and Radio Shack:
Best Buy didn't stock any Linux brand scanners????
Circuit City thought that if it working in Windows (with the drivers that are supplied with the device) then it HAS to work in Linux. At least they knew Linux was an OS.
And Radio Shack wanted my first born naming rights, phone number, SSN, address ...
CompUSA was the only store I found that knew what they were talking about, the other so called 'geek' departments are the reason i NO LONGER use any sales personal to buy any hardware or software.

CompUSA RIP, you WILL be missed

COmPUSA sucks.

I once bought a DVD Burner. Got home happliy thinking i can finally burn some movies. I opened the box and to my dismay i found a CD Bruner in it. i thought may be its a store mistake and took it back. They refused to take it back because they thought i changed the item in the box.

i reported to the manager and he said he cannot help me.

The one buy me was not that bad... the sales staff sucked but thats how it is at stores like that. Show me a retail store with good service and I will give you a high five. I have yet to find one.

Keep this in mind about CompUSA. The company was run HORRIBLY from the TOP down.

They used fear tactics on all their employees that if you did not sell an extended warranty, you will be fired. They even had all store managers on a daily conference call if they did not hit a certain percentage. So with pressure like that, it was taken out on the salespeople.

As you can imagine, the good workers became sharks who could care less about their customers as long as their sales goals were being met. The bad workers could not care less about the customers. With the combination of both, customer service did not exist.

Add to that horrible sales and service set forward from corporate headquarters, and it is not a shocker to see them go out of business.

The writer of this blog is a moron. While CompUSA failed, that's not all good. I am sure you are smiling at all of the 1,000s of employees laid off....that's a moronic statement you made above. You have the personality of a 13-year old. Grow up pimple face

I've never had a problem with Compusa or its employees. I do my research before I go in and know what I need. When I did have to ask questions, the employees were helpful. When I bought my laptop from them the sales person took the time to explain the system and etc. I like the store. I'll miss it.
